June 9th - 13, 2025

Language Arts

We have finished our block 4 sounds, so we have completed all of the grade 1 sounds for the year. We will continue to do some review over the next few weeks.
We will be working on descriptive writing. This week we will begin with describing our class caterpillars
We will be working in our literacy centres.
We will be doing independent reading everyday.

Math

We are working on counting forwards and backwards from 1-100.
We will be working in our Math centers.
We will finish up story problems and start our unit on measure.

Integrative Units of Studies - We have started our unit on Life Cycles. We will be studying the life cycle of a butterfly. We have caterpillars in our class and we will watch them grow into butterflies and then set them free outside. We will be doing some descriptive writing on the butterflies as well.

Sunscreen - With warmer days ahead (hopefully), some students have started to bring sunscreen to school. We ask that sunscreen be applied at home in the morning if possible, and then students can re-apply before lunchtime recess if needed.
Please do not send spray sunscreen (the fumes are strong and it makes the floor slippery). Also, just a reminder that teachers cannot apply sunscreen, so the students should be able to do so on their own if they are bringing it to school. Thanks for your cooperation!
On Wednesday June 11th Home and School will be having a celebration at our park from 4pm-6pm. Come on out and celebrate the year!
Libray is done for the year, so please send in all library books ASAP. I will sending home email with books that are not returned by next week.
If you are placing lunch orders for June, please DO NOT order food for June 12th as we will not be at school that day (field trip) and June 26th as I will be buying the whole class pizza (each student will get 1 pizza and garlic fingers).

Hi Parents,

I hope you all had a wonderful Victoria Day weekend! The students are continuing to learn so much in 1G. Here is a glimpse at our week ahead.

Language Arts

This week we will be finishing our Block 4 sounds. Our last sound that we will be working on is "ph" (phrase, dauphin, photo) That means that that we will be finished of all the Grade 1 sounds. For the remainder of the year, we will do some review of the previous lessons and sounds, to help with consolidation, efficiency and fluency.
In writing we are continuing to work on "Les petits moments" or little moments in the children's life. The students are compiling several little stories.
We will be working in our literacy centres.
We will be doing independent reading everyday.

Math

We are working on counting forwards and backwards from 1-100.
We will be working in our Math centers.
We are working on subtraction. We have learned about many different strategies the students can use to support them such as using a ten frame, counters, bead bracelet, pictures. We will continue to practice this and then we hopefully will start story problems later in the week.

Homework – Please continue reading the books sent home every week as well as the sound/syllable/sentences page and sight words. I am sending out a new sight word list, la liste rose. Please work on these during the month of May as well as reviewing the previous ones.

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. I can't believe we are officially into May!! The students have been learning so much in 1G. Here is a glimpse at our week ahead.

Language Arts

We are working on our block 4 sounds. This week we are working on the silent x (deux, yeux, voix) and the s(z) sound (maison, rose, chose).
We will be doing some review of the all the sounds we have worked on.
In writing we are continuing ton work on "Les petits moments" or little moments in the children's life. The students are compiling several little stories.
We will be working in our literacy centres.
We will be doing independent reading everyday.

Math

We are working on counting forwards and backwards from 1-90.
We will be working in our Math centers.
We have finally wrapped up addition and we will be starting subtraction.

Hi Parents,

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter weekend. There so much on the go this week! Wednesday our Easter Seals ambassador, Remi Dean will be visiting our school. We will be having some discussions on kindness and compassion and watching a little video from Remy before his visit. Here is a glimpse at other currciculum outcomes we will be covering.

Important Information/Dates

This week is French week at Glen Stewart. We will be doing a few activities in class to celebrate. We will also be attending a little concert on Thursday. The Music Man (Michael Pendergast) will be putting on a little concert for all students in the school on Thursday.
Many were also coming in from recess before the break with wet socks. Please pack a couple extra pairs as we do go out even if the playground is wet. As much as I tell them to stay out of the water it doesn't help.

I hope you had a great weekend! I can't believe we are days away from April! We had a great week back to school last week. The students did a great job or getting back into the routine and were motivated to learn new things! Here is what we will be touching on in 1G this week!

We have started our 4 block of sounds. This week we are working on sounds qu (que & qui) and soft c & ç (as in cerise & garçon)

Important Informartion/Dates

We will having Spring Photos this Thursday.
Friday will be hat day at school. This will be one of our fundraisers for Easter Seals. Those who wear a hat, I'm asking them to donate $1-$2 to the cause.

We are still discussing and reviewing winter/winter clothing. The students will make a dress up art version of themselves in their winter clothing. When they are done the student will write about what they wear.

Next week is Family Literacy week at Glen Stewart. We are encouraging parents to take a picture of their family celebrating literacy together or what it looks like in your house and email a copy of the picture to our school email account : GSPliteracy@gmail.com. We would like to print the pictures and make a collage of all the pictures of our families. Please have pictures submitted by Friday January 24th so we can get things organized.

Hi Parents!

Happy New Year! We had a wonderful first week back to school getting into the swing of things. I am trying to enforce more consistency in speaking French in the classroom both to myself and to peers as this is so important for oral language progression. I will soon start a reward system to help so stay tuned. Here is what we will be working on in class this week.

Language Arts

We have now started our third set of sounds. They are mostly blended sounds which consist of 2 sounds together. This week we are finishing up the in/ain sound and will learn about consonant + l sounds (plus, clou, flou, blé, table, ongle)
We will also continue to review all the alphabet letters and sounds that we have studied.
We have started discussing clothing/winter clothes and we will continue to discuss that. We are working on structures such as Je porte (I wear) and Je mets (I put on)
We will be working in our literacy centres.
We will be doing independent reading everyday.

Math

We are working on counting forwards and backwards from 1-40.
We will be working in our Math centers.
We are finished up 3D objects and have started working on equal/unequal grouping.

I just want to say how proud I was of the students for performing so well at the Christmas concert. What a fantastic job! We will be having a fun week this week in 1G! Here are some things that we will be doing;

We have been working on our second set of sounds. They are mostly blended sounds which consist of 2 sounds together. This week we are working on the s sound at the end of the word, like jus and amis. We will also continue to review all the alphabet letters and sounds that we have studied so far.
This week we will be continuing to discuss Christmas themes and writing about what we want for Christmas.
There are students coming over from Stratford Elementary to read some French books to our class.
We will be working in our literacy centres.
We will be doing independent reading everyday.

This week we will be working on the es ound at the end at the end of the word like vite and poule. We will also continue to review all the alphabet letters and sounds that we have studied so far.
This week we will be continuing to discuss Christmas themes.
We will be will be doing some writing in connection with Christmas. We will be writing about what Santa Claus wears.
We will be working in our literacy centres.
We will be doing independent reading everyday.

We are working on counting forwards and backwards from 1-40
We will be working in our Math centers.
We will continuing to work on 2D objects and hopefully starting 3D objects

Homework – Hopefully the homework is going well. Please continue to review all the tasks and aim for about 15/20 minutes a night.

Important Information

Reminder to please send in permission form and $2 by Wednesday for our field trip on Thursday.
Christmas Concert: Our concert will be taking place on December 11th at 1:10pm and 6:00pm. Each student received 2 tickets per show last week. If you have any extra tickets could you please send them in ASAP. We want to redistribute to those you may need them. If you do need extra tickets please reach out to our principal, Vanessa Dunn. Students are to come dressed in their best concert attire both in the morning and the evening. For the evening concert, I ask that students arrive by 5:30 and simply come down to the classroom (parents can head to the gym and find a seat for the concert).

Report cards will be going home this Wednesday, December 4th.
Later in the week there will be a permission form coming home for another field trip that we will be taking. We are going to a French magic show on December 12th at the French school. There will also be a $2 fee for the bus that you can also send in with the permission form.
Christmas Concert: Our concert will be taking place on December 11th at 1:10pm and 6:00pm. Each student will be received 2 tickets per show this week. If you have any extra tickets could you please send them back in ASAP. We want to redistribute to those who may need them. If you do need extra tickets please reach out to our principal, Vanessa Dunn.
I sent home a December calendar on fun activities that we will be everday this month.

We have been working on our second set of sounds. They are mostly blended sounds which consist of 2 sounds together. This week we will be working on the c dur like corbeau and g dur like gorgée . We will also continue to review all he alphabet letters and sounds that we have studied so far.
This week we will be discussing Family vocabulary

We will be working in our literacy centres
We will be doing independent reading everyday

Math

We are working on counting forwards and backwards from 1-30
We are working on representing numbers
We will be wrapping up our unit on representing numbers.

Hi Parents,

I hope everyone had a great weekend! We have a short but busy week ahead. Tomorrow is going to be so much fun with our field trip to Orwell Corner. Please make sure to dress your children warmly with a winter jacket, hat, and mitts. It is getting colder out! On Wednesday we will be attending our annual Remembrance Day assembly.

Language Arts

Hi Parents!

We have super busy week ahead with Halloween! We have some fun activities planned, including a class party on Thursday. If you are interested in sending in a treat please send me an email. Treats must be peanut free. The students are allowed to dress up in their costume but there should be no masks or weapons.

Language Arts

· This week we are starting a new set of sounds. They are mostly blended sounds which consist of 2 sounds together. This week we will be starting with the é sound. We will also continue to review all the alphabet letters and sounds that we have studied so far

· This week we will begin talking about Halloween vocabulary

· We will be working on a haunted house art/writing project

· We will be working in our literacy centres

· We will be doing independent reading everyday

· We are working on counting forwards and backwards from 1-30

· We are working on representing numbers by finding the number before and after a number.

Homework – Hopefully the homework is going well. This week I added a new task to our list, which includes sight words. The students are to study la liste rouge. The words have already been taught and studied in class. The tasks can still be divided up how you would like throughout the week. Please aim for about 15/20 minutes a night.

· We are continuing to review the alphabet letters and sounds. This week we will be doing some review on all the letters and I will be starting some evaluations with the students on the letter, sound and syllables.

· We will be starting our Literacy Centers.

· This week we will begin talking about Halloween Vocabulary

· The students are using specific sentence starters words like, C'est, Il ya, Regarde, J'aime, J'adore and Voici to help them

create sentences with specific vocabulary.

· We are beginning a Monster art/writing project connected to Halloween.

· We will continue practicing our printing of lowercase letters using the correct formation.

Math

· We are working on counting forwards and backwards from 1-30

· We are working on Representing numbers

· We are continuing to represent numbers through pictures and number lines.

Homework – How did the homework go? Will will continue this week. There are around 4 tasks the students need to do and you can divide up the tasks how you would like throughout the week. Please aim for a task each night or if there is a busier evening you can group task together on 1 night, if that works better. Please don’t do more than 15/20 minutes of homework per night. Please make sure you send the blue duotang back on Monday so I can add the new homework for the week.

Field trip to Cotton Park - We decided on tomorrow for Cotton Park as it has the least amount of rain in the forecast for the week. The students still may need a warm jacket/rainkacket/mitts/gloves. Thanks!

Hi Parents!

We had a great first two days of grade one! We are learning lots of new routines, building friendships and getting to know each other. This week we will continue to practice routines and establish expectations. I'm looking forward to our first full week together! Here is a glimpse of what we will be doing this week:

Language Arts

We will be reviewing coulours and the letters of the alphabet
We will be starting a sound/phonics program that will review sounds more explicity. We wil begin by reviewing the sounds for the leters Ii,Ll,Oo,Aa,Tt,Nn

Math

We are reviewing numbers 1-10
We will spend some time each afternoon in activity centers, where the students will play in groups with pladough, puzzles, blocks, rings and jenga.

Important Information

Meet the Teacher: You're invited to come into our classroom on September 18th from 6:20-6:35pm. This is a great chance to see your child's classroom, meet other parents and I'll have a quick slideshow to go over some information about grade 1!
