In my grade 1 class, I will be using a balanced literacy approach to learning. There will be opportunities for oral language development, explicit phonics instruction, reading and writing on a daily basis. I will introduce themes to develop and introduce new vocabulary and will be using centers and games to solidify learning outcomes. Students will work at their own level and will be organized into reading and writing groups according to their needs.
Patterns, Representing Numbers to 20, Addition and Subtraction to 20, Measurement, Numbers to 100, and Geometry.
I make use of learning centers and games on a regular basis to reinforce and practice concepts and skills.
We will cover various themes cover the course of the school year including:
1) Qu’est-ce qui rend la vie intéressante? (What makes life interesting?)
2) Comment bien vivre à l’école et à la maison? (How to life well at school and at home.)
3) Quels sont les changements importants dans la vie? (What are important changes in life?)
Handwriting without Tears. It is important that printing practices be established early in grade 1. In class, we will focus on proper pencil grip, how to form letters as well as letter size and placement on the line. To avoid confusion, we ask that you use the same language and explanations as used at school. Reference sheets will be included with the homework duo-tang. These sheets will be a different colour for quick identification.
The BE SAFE kit is a program for the prevention of child sexual abuse. This takes place in the spring and lasts one week - you will be notified before we begin.
Our daily specialist schedule can be found under the "Parent" tab
Homework is flexible and will include developing phonological awareness, building sight words and reading books. A new homework note will be posted to our class website on Mondays and will also be sent home in the yellow homework duotang. All materials travel back and forth to school in a messenger bag to help protect them. Please return the homework bag each day.
Please pack everything needed including utensils.
Please ensure that a water bottle is sent to school. This will come home nightly to be cleaned and returned.
Please provide a drink (water bottle is fine) for lunch time.
I do not provide drinking straws in an attempt to cut down on waste.
Please help your child by food sending packages and containers that they can open independently. Practice at home if necessary please. Thanks for your help!
