Our drama plays are now online! Check them out. I'm so proud of all the kids!
We are heading into the last week of school! Our field trip yesterday was a lot of fun. We made connections between Orwell Corner and the farm at Green Gables. At the newly built interpretive center we learned about friendship, nature and ourselves among other themes that were presented there. The walk through the Haunted Woods and down Lover's Lane was filled with connections to the books about Anne.
This morning, we had over a dozen kids show up at Mulberry Park and we had a great bike ride to school. The kids asked if we could do it again. I'll see what I can do about a possible bike club next year :)
Over the next week, we will be cleaning out our desks and taking our work off the walls. Please remind your child to empty their backpack each day so they do not end up with a bag that's too heavy. I will ensure that we divide up the supplies so there's not too much on any given day.
Have a wonderful weekend, and don't forget that we have our Drama Festival Gala at 1pm on Monday. We are so excited to see if we win!
Mme Bethany
How can this year be almost over? I am so grateful that we were able to be in school, in person, for the year. It's been wonderful getting to know your children and watching them learn and grow academically, socially and individually. You, as parents, are doing an incredible job raising your children. Thank you!
Our drama plays are now online!!! Have a look with your kids, they are so excited. Here is the link to watch all the submissions, https://sites.google.com/cloud.edu.pe.ca/peidramafestival/productionsproductions
We have just finished our first of three lessons in our Personal Safety Unit. We are learning about abuse and what to do if it's happening to me. One lesson is on physical abuse, the second on verbal abuse and the third on sexual abuse.
The learning objectives for our Personal Safety Unit program are to help students:
talk openly about how abuse happens, and how even people close the them can hurt them
understand that abuse can physical, verbalk, or sexual
understand that they are in charge of their body, that their body belongs only to them
recognize that abuse is the perpetrator's fault, and is never the fault of the victim
discuss reasons children may fear reporting abuse
learn the difference between good secrets and bad secrets and
understand the importance of telling a trusted person about the abuse.
We are working through the many systems of the human body this week. We will finish learning about them this week. Next week students will be working in groups of three and preparing a diagram and presentation of each system.
We are wrapping up our measurement unit this week. The learning outcomes that students should master are; 1) draw different rectangles for a given perimeter or area, 2) measure length in millimetres and 3) relate units of measure (mm, cm, m, and km). Over the next two weeks, I will be continuing to review and revisit the concepts we have covered over the year.
We have finished our Crimes, Clues and Suspects Book Club in English and our mystery stories. Watch for your child's mystery story as it comes home this week to be shared. We will be continuing to write every second day on a writing piece of their choice. We will start our final read aloud The Flight of the Puffin, which has a beautiful message of "You are seen. You are heard. You are loved."
In French, we will also write every second day with a writing piece of their choice and read one last read aloud La Clique du Camp: La grotte du mort. This book takes place at a summer camp.

We will be working on measurement for two weeks. I will be continuing to review multiplication and division to help those who have not quite mastered the concepts. I strongly encourage you to practice multiplication facts up to 9x9 weekly until these facts are instantaneous.
We are wrapping up our Explorers unit mid week. Students will be presenting their Google Slide about their chosen explorer. We will then be starting the Human Body Systems unit. We will be learning about the different systems that we have; cardiovascular, muscular, endocrine, skeletal, respiratory, digestive, nervous, and the integumentary systems. If you have any books about these systems at home and would like to send them in, it would be greatly appreciated. Either English or French will be accepted as we can learn in both languages.
Students are wrapping up their informational text this week as well in French. We will be reading our revised versions to each other in the classroom.

Wow! It's already the middle of May. We have six weeks of school left, 27 days in grade five to be exact ... but who's counting?
I am so proud of the students and their hard work towards their book report presentations. They were able to present their book in interesting ways and made suggestions of who in the class would like to read the book as well. Our next presentation will be the Google Slide presentation they are preparing about a Canadian modern explorer. Students are working on this during school time. I have set the date to be completed for Friday, but as I am absent on Friday due to an appointment, this may be extended until Tuesday.
I will be continuing doing reading assessments with students in both English and French.
We are wrapping up division this week. We have been practicing and practicing the steps for long division and many have mastered the steps. I will continue to review both two digit by two digit multiplication and dividing three digits by one digit over the next six weeks. We will be moving onto a short unit on patterns then wrapping up with measurement. We will be working on area, where multiplication facts are used again. I cannot emphasize enough that students need to know their multiplication facts up to 9X9. Please continue to practice these at home.
As stated last week, as soon as our unit on Explorers has finished, we will begin the Science Unit on Human Body Systems.
Some dates to remember:
May 20th - afternoon field trip to Centennial Park

Please remember to do a weekly lice check and maybe look for ticks too. I have been reading about more incidents about ticks on the island. This article is already three years old and ticks were found all over the island. Here is a link about Lyme disease in PEI.
Have a great long weekend,
Mme Bethany
Maybe I'm showing my age (which all the kids know anyhow), but I was excited when Mme Beck and I decided to integrate our social studies and french writing together to write a biography on a modern Canadian explorer. I immediately thought back to 1992 and the moment I met Roberta Bondar at UPEI as she was presenting to girls in grades seven and eight to promote a career in science and math. Just today, students chose an explorer of their own and will be starting to create a google slide presentation. They will be writing paragraphs in the presenter's comment sections and creating an engaging slide to go along with their biography. I'm excited to see what they come up with. We will be presenting these either as a whole class or in small groups, depending on when we finish.
As we finish up with explorers in social studies this next week, we will be heading right into our next science unit - The Human Body Systems. We will be learning about the different systems that we have; cardiovascular, muscular, endocrine, skeletal, respiratory, digestive, nervous, and the integumentary systems.
We are continuing division in math. I am sending home daily math sheets that are to be completed each night which review 3 and 4 digit adding and subtracting as well as 1 and 2 digit multiplication. Please sign this sheet each night. If your child does not have time to complete the page, please sign and ask them to use the twenty minutes they have before Oh Canada to complete the rest. Please practice multiplication facts with your child as often as possible to help them recall them quicker when doing higher level math.
We have started a new book club in English; Crimes, Clues and Suspects. We will be working through a shared reading looking for clues. We will focus on description of people and places in the shared reading. Students are also reading their own book (The Deep End Gang, Too Many Secrets, or Mystery at Cranberry Farm). We started brainstorming today about the mystery story that we will write. Students were asked to think the main idea, developing the physical appearance and personality of each character, the relationships between the characters and to add clues and red herrings. Students are so excited for this unit!
La Danse Spéciale
Sur le Titanic
What a fun week we had last week painting and practicing lines. Both students and I learned a lot from our two experts that came in to discuss script writing and videography. Our scripts are done, our backdrops are done, our costumes and props are here... we are ready to film this week. I was excited to hear that our expert videographer will also be splicing together our plays so that takes off a lot of pressure from me and the students. I cannot wait to share the final product with you all.
Informational writing was started then paused when I realized we had just two weeks to prepare everything for our play. We will continue next week.
Our French book report will also be continued next week. Please look over different book report ideas with your child here and help them be prepared complete their project during class time the first week of May. The link for book report ideas is https://www.weareteachers.com/creative-book-report-ideas/. If you are looking for more French books for your child, don't forget about our public library system. Students also have access to SORA through their school email. Have students log in to Google then go to SORAAPP.com and select the French Language School Board (https://soraapp.com/library/flsbpei).
We have finished learning the four different multiplication strategies; ARRAY, LATTICE, PIED (FOIL) and TRADITIONAL. We will be heading into division this week and learning strategies for 3 digit divided by 1 digit.
Our modern explorers unit is also on hold until next week. We will be looking at Canadian explorers such as; Jill Heinerth, George Kourounis, Mylène Paquette, Adam Shoalts, and Ray Zahab (https://rcgs.org/programs/explorers-in-residence/)
We held our Earth Week activities last week. While we were not the winners for the litterless lunch on Thursday, students can still receive the prize of a packet of sunflower seeds by completing the following form with Cheerios campaign Bring Back the Bees. https://www.cheerios.ca/bringbackthebees/
La danse spéciale
Le chantage
La légende de l'épée légendaire
Des différents mondes
I hope you enjoyed your long weekend.
There are many exciting things happening in the classroom at this time. We are in the final stages of our drama plays. We will receive instruction from an expert in script writing so we can improve what we have written so far. We need to submit our final video production to the PEI Drama Festival by April 30th.
Please help your child find what they need for costumes and props and send them in as they are available.
Please label any items that are to be returned home.
We will begin a new writing unit on Informational Texts this week. We will be following Lucy Caulkins module and writing about something that the students are experts in or are interested in. We will also use the same structure to write a biography about a modern Canadian explorer. This biography will fulfill two grade five subjects; learning about explorers and writing a biography.
We will be finishing our English Read Aloud, The Wild Robot this week. To finish off this unit, students will be completing their Robot art and will design (in theory only) a robot that will perform a task that they choose.
We are continuing multiplying 2 digit by 2 digit numbers this week and will start division as well.
Information was sent home on Thursday about the 2023 Canada Games Mascot Design Challenge. For more information, please visit 2023canadagames.ca
Please send extra pants and socks for your child. There is a lot of mud around the school yard and students are falling often.
Also, don't forget a weekly head lice check.
No school May 7th due to Professional Development for teachers.
May 14th, we will be participating in Arbour Day Celebrations at Victoria Park.
Hello!
We had our first drama expert into the class this morning. Mme Cécile Arsenault taught us how to think further about who are characters are and how to add accessories to show their personalities. Students can start bringing in their costumes, I have a closet that we can store them in. Please send either a hanger or a plastic bag (or both) so we can organize the many different characters we have. Our next expert is coming in next Monday to help us with script writing.
In math, we are continue multiplication strategies. We are learning about how to use two different methods; array, FOIL, lattice and traditional. Here is a link for the first strategy, array, explained by Mme Beck.
In French we are starting a Book Report project. Students have two weeks to read a book independently at home and in class. Starting on April 26th, we will have class time to prepare a creative book report to present to the class on April 30th. If your child needs materials (aside from what I can provide at school; paper, paint, glue, tape, etc,), please send it in BEFORE the 26th. Here is a link that I shared with the students about possible ideas https://www.weareteachers.com/creative-book-report-ideas/.
Please send extra pants and socks for your child. There is a lot of mud around the school yard and students are falling often.
Also, don't forget a weekly head lice check.
No school April 16th and May 3rd due to Professional Development for teachers.
Have a great week,
Mme Bethany
Wow, so much has happened since I last updated our blog. I will do my better to update weekly.
We are working on creating our own drama productions in French. We have three specialists coming in to help us with script writing, costumes and video production. We will be submitting the final products to the PEI Drama Festival and will upload them here as well. We are all very excited about this adventure. We will also begin working on informational texts in the near future, both in reading and writing.
In math, we have completed variables (3 + x = 9, a x 4 = 28) and have moved on to multiplication and division. Students should now be comfortable with multiplication facts up to 10x10. In grade five students will learn to multiply 2 digits by 2 digits (43 x 24). We will be learning various strategies to find the product. I will be posting the videos to our math page that explains the strategies later this week.
We have started our Explorers unit in French Social Studies. We will work through this unit through April.
In English, we are reading The Wild Robot. We are also continuing to learn how to prove our answers and opinions using evidence in articles that we are reading.
I hope that you had a wonderful Easter break and are geared up for the final few months of grade five.
Mme Bethany
Here we are in the middle of February.
We have moved onto estimation in math. We are discussing over and underestimations as well as learning strategies to add and subtract estimations with ease. We will be moving on to adding and subtracting decimals next week. For this, please ensure that your student has graph paper, this was on the school supply list, to help them line up digits so they are adding in the right place value column.
We are finishing up our persuasive writing unit in both languages. Students will be asked to write a persuasive text individually later this week, possibly next week, to show what they've learned and how to apply it.
I will be taking a break from read-alouds in French to focus on small group reading instruction. Through assessment and individual reading, I will be targeting vocabulary enrichment and how to make self-corrections while reading.
The provincial lunch program no longer provides utensils, please ensure your child is packing what they need for the day.
Can you believe that it's the last week of January already!
Your kids have been working hard in all subjects. I finished their French reading assessments this week and am now starting English reading assessments. My goal is to read with three students a day over a period of six days. Everyone should have be finished their reading assessments by the end of next week. I completed another round of spelling assessments and students have been placed in new groups with new words.
We are into the final lessons in both English and French reading. Students will be beginning their final projects in both languages this week. There will lots of time to complete their work at school. There are new spelling words in English. Please check the English Page for your child's list.
In math we are continuing to estimate whole numbers, with a focus on estimating to the nearest tens, hundreds and thousands. We will be starting to learn how to find the difference between two estimates in the next couple of days.
I did not find enough time for Science prior to Christmas, so we will be spending lots of time now. We are currently learning about physical and chemical changes to matter. We had a classroom experiment today that tasted so good! Check out our Science Page to see some pictures.
I have been in touch with a few parents over the past few weeks regarding missing or incomplete homework. I will be starting a new checklist daily so I can see patterns and help out where I can.
Please ensure your child has utensils in their lunch. As of February 12th, the school will no longer be providing any, nor will the Provincial Hot Lunch program be handing them out.
Have a great day!
Hello Parents of 5B!
Don't forget that Friday is family literacy day! Your child can dress as a book character and may bring a small treat to share if they would like. If you choose to send in a treat, please don't forget to ensure it is nut free and packaged individually.
We are well into the month of January. In January 7th's post, I wrote down what we will be working on through the month of January. We are still reading through our French and English read-a-louds and book club books.
We had a math test on Friday that covered comparing and ordering fractions and decimals. Students practiced all week and received one on one help or small group instruction. We will now move onto estimating where we will learn different estimation strategies to add and subtract both whole numbers and decimal numbers.

Happy New Year Parents of 5B!
I, like many of you, am so appreciative of the fact that we live on PEI and are able to return to classes. Thank you for all you do to keep your family and community safe.
We have started many new learning outcomes this week. Here is a quick overview of what is happening.
French:
Reading: Guided reading with more reading strategies being taught through a read aloud of La guerre des tuques.
Writing: Persuasive writing unit. We will be following Lucy Calkin's writing module.
Cursive writing: Although this is not part of the grade five curriculum, 15/18 students have asked to practice cursive writing. So we will be working on this before O Canada each day.
Oral communication: Working on adding adverbs in our daily speech.
Grammar: Continuation of verb study.
Math: Relating Fractions to Decimals and Comparing Decimals.
English: Working through the Bully Free Zone Book Club.
From the teaching guide " I will read be reading Traitors, a book about bullied children, we'll read some materials together, and then you'll be reading different books about the same theme in you book clubs. We'll be thinking about how children can become victims and how others bully them. We be discussing how to recognize responses that we can use in different conflict situations. We will look at different points of view and how the characters handle the bullying situations."
Merry Christmas Parents of 5B!
You may have heard that I have been absent for the past few days. I am awaiting my test results for COVID that took place on Thursday morning. So hopefully I will receive good news today!
I was last in school on Wednesday, which is the day your children made 85 beautiful cards to hand out to seniors in our community. My vision was to hand deliver them to seniors living at home around our school. With the restrictions in place, we are unable to hand deliver as a class. If you know of seniors in your neighbourhood who would love to receive a handmade card, please send the number of cards you are willing to deliver and I will make sure they are sent home with your child. Any remaining cards, I will deliver around the Sherwood community myself.
It is my hope that we are in school in January. However, in the even that we are not, I will be sending your child home with French books to read. Please set them aside in a safe place, as they are from our classroom library. I will be sending a few notebooks home as well, just in case.
Over the holidays, take the time to rest and carry on your family traditions. I look forward to seeing you all in January!
Merry Christmas
Mme Bethany
