What time does school start/end?
The students enter the building at 8:25. O Canada is at 8:45am. Official dismissal is 2:40, but kindergarten students head out early to avoid the crowds.
Which door do kindergarten students use?
Our door is the door near the bus parking lot, to the left of the main door. It is easiest for your child when the students are here before 8:25 am as they see their friends and are not entering alone. Once the students have entered, the door is locked.
What do I do if my child is late coming to school?
Enter through the main door, and the office will help your child come to class.
What do I do if I need to pick up my child early?
Enter the main doors, and the office will call down to the classroom. You will sign out your child and your child will meet you in the office.
What do I do if I need to change my child's after school routine, pick up my child or contact you?
You can use Class Dojo to message me, but if I do not respond, please call the office for a change in after school routines. If I respond, there is no need to contact the office as they are very busy. You can also email me anytime.
What type of indoor shoes does my child need?
Sneakers/runners with no laces (unless your child can tie their own shoes) are needed for indoor shoes. It is a safety factor, especially for gym.
Do I need to send a lunch?
Please see the information sent home the first day of school for ordering hot lunches and milk. If you choose to order these, please send snacks. At first, I would suggest sending a lunch as well as often times, the kindergarten students do not enjoy all of these meals as they are not made the same as their parents. Some are more popular in kindergarten than others. These lunches are optional. If you do not order the lunches, you'll need to send a lunch and snacks. Please send a filled water bottle. We can refill as needed through the day.
Is Sherwood a nut free school?
Sherwood school is a nut free school. There are several students with severe allergies. We do not allow WOW butter or anything that "May contain" nuts. Please read all labels carefully.
Do I need to send utensils?
Now that we are in the new school, our classrooms have sinks! I have Ikea utensils that I allow the students to use, so no, you do not need to send utensils this year.
Do you send homework?
I do not often send homework, but later in the year I may send things that your child has learned so they can show you what they know. It is often more about their showing off what they know than something to do. Please read to your child daily, and play games where your child has to wait their turn, go for walks and spend time with your child.
Why should I label everything?
Our lost and found grows quite large, beginning the first day of school. If your child's name is on all their personal items, we know who to find, rather than placing it in the lost and found.
Do I need to send a change of clothing?
Yes, please send a clean t-shirt, pants, under garments and socks in a labelled ziploc bag. You never know when your child will need something else to wear. We can keep this bag at school and only send it home when it needs replacing.
What can I do to help?
Encourage your child to be independent: bathroom, eating, dressing (zippers, buttons, shoes, boots etc). We want them to be able to get ready for recess on their own. Have them help get their backpack ready, Encourage your child to take risks, to run, to roll, to play! Playing with playdoh, cutting, running, rolling down hills, swinging etc are all good for gross and fine motor skills.
