Sherwood School page - https://sherwood.edu.pe.ca/
Please visit the school web page as it is full of great information. There are links to the school bi-weekly newsletters, information on the school lunch program, school information, learning resources and other links.
Snacks and lunch: Peanut and nut free!!! Please be diligent with this. We cannot have any trace amounts of nuts (tree nuts included) coming into the school. Please read all labels, including labels of products with the peanut free symbol. We have found some foods that have the peanut free label but say in the ingredients that they may contain trace amounts of tree nuts, so please be extra careful. Chocolate spread is often made with hazelnuts. "Fake" peanut butter is not permitted in the school either as it causes confusion for students, as well as very real panic for those with allergies. Please pack everything needed including utensils. Sorry, we do not have access to a microwave to heat food.
Scent free : All schools in the PSB are scent free buildings. We also have some staff members that have severe reactions to scents. Please refrain from wearing scented products in our building.
Kindergarten French Immersion Curriculum:
Kindergarten is a play-based program. We use centres to help the students learn through play, although there is also some time for dedicated teaching and learning.
Language Arts: program established by the Department of Education
This includes play-based program as well as modelled reading and writing, shared reading and writing, guided reading and writing and independent reading and writing.
Mathematics: Chenelière Mathématiques.
The focus is on number sense from 1-10, patterns, geometry and measurement.
Science and Social Studies are integrated into the play based and language arts curriculum. Science focuses on the five senses, Social Studies focuses on self, community and safety.
Homework: I normally do not be send home much homework. I let parents know the sounds we have learned, the letters and words we are working on and the songs we are singing. I also send home the sight words, letters and printing for you to play with when you get the chance. I don’t call it “homework” as it is more for something to do on storm days or on a day off.
After school routine: We will always follow your child’s regular routine unless otherwise notified. Please send any changes in routine in writing and place into the "right back to school" pocket in the communication bag as I will check this every morning. E-mails and class dojo messages are usually fine, but if I am out I may not see the message.
Notes: When notes are sent home, please read them right away. Sometimes the information is fairly urgent. If there is something to be signed and filled in, please do so and return as soon as possible. I will place anything that must be returned on the side labelled “Right back to school.” Anything that doesn’t need to come back will be placed in the “Left at home” pocket. Please place other notes for me, or money in the pencil case that is in the homework duotang. That is the only place I will look unless I am looking for a signed paper for the office.
Sneakers: Please ensure that indoor and outdoor sneakers have no laces if your child cannot tie his or her shoes on their own. Please do not send in other shoes. We do not have the space to store extra indoor shoes. We ask that the sneakers do not mark the floor and that they are sneakers as we do need sneakers for phys ed, which can be outside or inside depending on the day.
Student pick up: If you must pick up your child early or drop your child off late, please use the office. Any adults entering the building must check in at the office. If you are picking up your child early, you must in at the office to sign out your child and the office will page the classroom. If you are picking your child up from school, I will help them find you. If your child normally takes the bus and you are picking them up at the end of the day, please send a note so I do not send him/her on the bus. Sometimes it is busy in the Cody Banks parking lot or in the area, and you may run a few minutes behind. Any time you come to the school, please use the Cody Banks parking lot as we have students using the paved areas for recess and play times. Sometimes classes go outside with chalk or other items for academic purposes and it is dangerous to have cars moving in and out of the grounds. With the amount of construction around, we have lost a lot of our play areas and waiting areas for parents, so please be patient as we all work together to figure things out.
Absences: Please e-mail me to let me know if your child will be absent. The office is extremely busy and this saves them a little bit of time calling down to the classroom.
This year I will not be sending many e-mails for information as parents can access our blog, and I enjoy using Class Dojo as it is so user friendly, although in certain circumstances our admin asks that we use e-mail. You can contact me by e-mail, on Class Dojo (parents last year found that the easiest) and by calling the school and leaving a message for me.
