SOME TRICKS WHEN HELPING YOUR CHILD IN A SECOND LANGUAGE AT HOME:

When a word is difficult to read or understand:

If your child having difficulty understanding or reading a word in a story that was sent home, go to Google Translate. Select - French-English under "languages" and insert the French word. The translation will appear on the right. Under the word on the left, click the audio button and the French word will be read back to you.

When watching a video on-line:

I created a video to show you how to change the speed on French videos (some can be a little too quick for the children) and how to show the subtitles. So, this is new learning for me and it ended up with my picture in the corner when I thought I had turned that option off...oh, well. Next time!

This site is good to use if you are wondering how a word should be pronounced in French. Choose the language (French). Type in a word or sentence, then click the play button to hear it in French.

GOOGLE CLASSROOM TIPS

  • FYI that some Google Classroom passwords have what appears to be lower case L, (l), it is actually an upper case i (I). All letter characters in the passwords are from the top row of the keyboard including capital letters. (qwertyuiop)

  • When a student logs in to Google Classroom with his/her password at home, the user must include @cloud.edu.pe.ca at the end of their username. This is different than how the the children do it on the Chromebooks at school (FYI just in case your child tells you they don't have to type it in).

  • When going into Google Classroom, make sure you are in the GOOGLE CHROME browser. If you are in Safari, Firefox, etc and just click www.google.com, some of the links in Google classroom may not function properly.

GOOGLE SLIDES

  • When your child opens a Google Slides, there are two things he/she can do to enlarge the size. There is a zoom button (it looks like a magnifying glass) on the left which can go to 100%. There is also a “PRESENT” button on the top-right which will expand it to take up the full screen. Hit the button “ESC” (top-left) to get out of full screen mode

  • If you are having difficulty getting the Google Slide to work on your Chromebooks, Ipad, tablet or tablet or mobile phone, you may need to download the free APP for Google Slides. You should also download the free APP for Google Docs and Google Drive in order to make these applications work seamlessly.
