Oral Language is very important for your child to learn. It involves skills needed for speaking and listening. You can help support this by having many back and forth conversations with your child where they have a turn to talk but also have to wait and actively listen. Some other ways to promote this is by singing or playing rhyming songs and games, having them follow directions, model and express appropriate ways to express emotions, and ask and respond to questions.

Young students need to learn important concepts of print like book handling skills, text directionality, spacing, function of letters and punctuation. They also need to understand that print can be used to communicate information.

In kindergarten, children develop print concepts, phonological awareness, and knowledge of letter names and sounds, all of which contribute to the development of fluent reading. These skills are a necessary foundation to reach the ultimate goal of reading: comprehension.  We all know reading is a complex process. As kindergarten teachers, we have the unique privilege of developing our young students into readers. Reading instruction in Kindergarten has five main components: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension.

Print awareness is an important pre-reading skill.
