Homework will go home on the first school day of the week.
Homework should not take longer than 20- 30 Minutes.
Reading
Students should read each day for 20 minutes- Please sign the reading record sheet each evening indicating your child has read. I have included reading strategies in their homework duotang. Homework books should not be difficult- if they are too difficult please remind your child to trade it in the following day and write a comment on the reading record sheet.
Math
Included in the homework duotang is a sheet of addition facts- we strive for a three second recall of these by the end of grade 3. You may wish to highlight the ones your child knows quickly and focus on those that they need more time to solve. I would suggest picking 10 questions to review each night and have them solve them mentally if possible. Some may need to use some tools at first but with practice they will get better. Make it fun! Have math challenges with them and let them test your math skills.
Students also need to be able to skip count forward and backward from 0 to 1000 by 5s, 10s, or 100s, using any starting point; 3s using starting points that are multiples of 3; 4s using starting points that are multiples of 4; 25s, using starting points that are multiples of 25. Extra practice with this is beneficial as well. This math practice can be done anywhere and anytime- traveling in the car to sports or music practice or adding it in before bed. Students can also do this independently. I will also be adding some links so students can practice math facts online. ***Skip counting practice is very worthwhile for when we begin multiplication & division later in the year.***
