Weekly Communication
February 19th-23rd, 2024
1. School Dance
Please be reminded the school dance is taking place on February 23. There are two timeslots for families to sign up to attend from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The dance is free but there will be a concession table with chips, water, candy, and glowsticks for sale.
February 8-9th, 2024
So much snow! I hope that you had to time enjoy the snow while digging out after the storm. We watched most of the first movie today, we will finish the first movie and watch the cartoon movie tomorrow, Friday, February 9th. This afternoon was the Sherwood Showcase, with some students in 5A participating and others watching.

February 28 - Multicultural Concert @ 10:15am. Students in 5A will be performing, parents of students in 5A are welcome to attend.
March 7th - Parent Teacher Interviews in the evening (sign up to come later)

March 22nd - April 1st - Spring Break and Easter Holiday (no classes for students)
Writing:
We will wrap up our persuasive writing unit by the end of February.2
French Reading:
We are celebrating finishing our read aloud. I will be beginning formal assessments once again in reading while students participate in book clubs during class time.
English Reading:
I will be formally assessing in English as well. Students will be working on grammar rules and a book review.
Integrated Curriculum:
Students will be working on their heritage projects. At this point, they should have completed the family interview that came home last week.

Happy New Year,
The past two weeks have been a whirlwind for me as my family took a mini vacation to BC over the weekend. Students in 5A had a great time with two guest teachers and continued many of the activities that had been started.

Writing
We are currently studying persuasive texts in both English and French. We are learning about persuasive words and phrases, how to sell our idea or change someone's mind, and how to add pertinent examples to support our opinion.
French Reading
We are reading Guerre Des Tuques in French. It is a French classic about a group of students who organize a village snowball fight. Themes that we will touch are friendship and camaderie.
English Reading
We are reading Thirst in English. Themes in this story include inequality, world water crisis, and friendship.
Math
We are working on 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication this week and will hopefully move into 3 digit / 1 digit division as well. While each day students are practicing the traditional multiplication method, they are also learning other ways as well, such as the BOX method, LATTICE method and FOIL (PIED in French) method.

5A Elves hard at work preparing over 3000 candy grams to be delivered next week to the school community!

Time has flown in 5A. We've had parent teacher interviews come and go. Snow has fallen then melted and fallen again. 5A Elves are busy collecting candy grams, counting donations and sorting candy grams. We will be adding candy canes to the candy grams soon. Has your child told you we have sold over 1700 candy grams already!!!!

French Reading & Writing
Students have finished writing a story with their grade two reading buddies. We are now reading a variety of different Christmas stories and wriitng our own version.
English Reading & Writing
Students are working on book reports in English. They are working together to create a Christmas song mash up which they will present on December 15th to the class.
Math
Students are working on adding and subtracting decimals and estimating strategies, as well as beginning two digit by two digit multiplication.
October 30th - November 3rd, 2023
How is it the end of October already! Tomorrow is Halloween, students may dress up if they wish, however masks and weapon props are not allowed at school. We will be not be having a Halloween party tomorrow, but we will have some Halloween activities in class. Wednesday, students will be watching Anne of Green Gables and this is the day you can send in a snack to share. As we have multiple allergies in our classroom, I am asking parents to send in fruits and vegetables, lactose-free cheese and/or juice boxes. What we are learning
French reading - We have finished La Nouvelle Maitresse. We will begin our Book Clubs later this week. Students will be learning to prepare notes to discuss questions about their book.
French writing - Students are nearly done writing their Halloween story. We will spend the week editing and revising their stories.
English reading - I will be formally assessing students in English reading. They will also begin an independent book review on a book of their choice.
English writing - Students are writing a narrative story of their choice.
Math - We are learning to identify and represent decimal numbers.

October 23rd - 27th, 2023
What a fantastic day we had at Green Gables today. I'm quite sure the students enjoyed exploring Green Gables and finding the little details that we read about in the book. The walk, or should I say run, through Lover's Land and the Haunted Wood were embraced by all and it was fun to see kids just be kids outside. We had a few sprinkles of rain, but nothing we weren't prepared for.

French Reading: We continue to learn more strategies in reading including sharing our own favourite books to inspire others.
French Writing: Students are still working on a narrative story about a haunted house. We will be sharing these stories with our reading buddies in grade two next week. We will take this stories through the revision and editing process before printing them.
English Reading: We have finished reading Anne of Green Gables. This week, students will prepare a book and/or site review to demonstrate their understanding of the characters and plot of the story. I will be commencing English reading assessments as well this week.
English Writing: Students have started a narrative writing of their choice. We have been practicing coming up with ideas using Story Cubes.
Math: We are moving onto representing decimal numbers up to one thousandths. We will also begin adding and subtracting whole numbers and decimal numbers.

Good afternoon Families of 5A,
Please note that we will be going on our field trip on Monday,October 23rd. I've had to change the date as I have important medical appointment that I need to go to the morning of the 19th.
We're into our final week of our Battery Blitz. 5A has likely collected around 500 batteries at this point. Please ask your neighbours and families to donate, as the school with the most batteries collected wins the prize.

Math: We are moving onto representing decimal numbers up to one thousandths. We will also begin adding and subtracting whole numbers and decimal numbers. Students have begun to practice their multiplication facts ten minutes a day at school.
Integrated Curriculum: Students are very close to finishing their personal reflection art inspired by Jackson Beardy. We are also learning about forces and how external forces can affect structures.

I hope you had a lovely weekend with family and friends. Thank you for your donations of non-perishable food last week. Sherwood students collected over 950lbs of food for the food bank. Way to go Sherwood Foxes!!

What we are learning
French reading - We are halfway through La Nouvelle Maitresse and students are practicing reading with a narrator's voice and stopping after each chapter to review what happened. I will be completing my reading assessments this week and then moving into Book Clubs and guided reading time.
English reading - We are continuing with Anne of Green Gables. If parents choose to volunteer, please be aware that there are forms to be filled and a criminal check to be done prior to the field trip.
Integrated Curriculum - Students are working this week on creating an art piece that describes themselves in the artstyle of Jackson Beardy. I am very excited about what their finished work will look like.

Happy Thanksgiving Families of 5A,
This week we will be attending our Thanksgiving concert assembly tomorrow, Friday the 6th. Our grade 2 students have been busy preparing for the concert. If you have a child in grade 2, you are welcome to attend tomorrow's concert. We will be continuing Sherwood's tradition of collecting nonperishable food donations for the food bank. All donations should be handed in by Friday morning.

What we are learning
French reading - We are continuing to read aloud La Nouvelle Maîtresse. Students are completing a comprehension booklet that focuses on vocabulary, identifying important events, and answering questions. Reading strategies, such as taking notes as we read and asking ourselves "does it make sense?" are being modeled and practiced as well this week. I am in the middle of completing reading assessments and will continue next week.
French Writing - Students have completed their book inspired by Mon chien banane this week and we will be sharing it with our reading buddies in grade 2. We will be moving onto narrative writing.
English Reading - I am continuing to read Anne of Green Gables. Students will be identifying descriptive language to use in their own narrative stories. We will be heading to visit the Green Gables museum later this month.
Math - We are moving along in math, students are reprensenting numbers to 1 000 000. We will be starting to represent numbers to the thousandths next week.
Intergrated Curriculum - We have been learning about residential schools these past two weeks and will create an art piece based on the artist Jackson Beardy. After the art, we will return to learning about natural forces and their impacts on the topography of the atlantic provinces.

We've had a wonderful start to the school year. It was wonderful meeting you at the Home and School BBQ Meet the Teacher night. In our weekly communication, you will find out about upcoming important dates and what we are currently learning in school.
Important Dates
September 21 - Terry Fox Run at Rosedale Park. Students can bring in a loonie or a toonie to donate to the Terry Fox Foundation. Online donations can also be made at https://schools.terryfox.ca/41425. Please note, the rain date will be September 22.

What we are learning
French Reading - We are beginning with a read aloud, La Nouvelle Maîtresse. Students will be focusing one a different reading strategy for each chapter and will then practice the same strategy during their own independent reading. I will be beginning reading assessments this week to see where students are now.
French Writing - To ease back into writing, I have a few picture books that I will be sharing with the students. These books are appropriate as writing models so students can follow a pattern while they are practicing spelling, punctuation, and complete sentences once again. Here's is a link to one of the books we have read so far, Mon Chien Banane.
English Reading - I have started reading Anne of Green Gables with the students. It's a fantastic book that goes along with our writing unit. Students will be asked to answer comprehension questions as we read through the book. We will head to the Anne of Green Gables museum in October to finish off the unit.
English Writing - Our first writing genre is a personal memoir. We will be learning various writing strategies to make our stories engaging and descriptive for our readers.
Math - Representing numbers to 1 000 000 is where we start in grade 5. We will be learning how to represent numbers in words, decomposed, and symbolically. In the very near future we will begin practicing multiplication facts up to 9X9.
Integrated Units - We will be learning about forces, both natural and man-made. We will then move on to learn how humans have combatted natural forces by creating structures that resist wind and water.
