Hi Families of 4B,

It's hard to believe that we are already moving into the last week of May. The days are flying by as we stay busy focusing on our curriculum outcomes. With the sunny days and longer evenings, it's not uncommon for students to lose a bit of interest, energy, and patience at this time of year. We continue to have daily conversations about the importance of being respectful and responsible learners. Your support in ensuring your child is well-rested and ready for school each day is greatly appreciated.

As we move into June, we will be spending the next few weeks reviewing many curriculum outcomes and completing our last writing unit of study on poetry. This coming week, students will be finishing up our persuasive unit, revising, and editing their final pieces. We will end the week by sharing our pieces with each other with a little in-class celebration. Just a friendly reminder that students should still be reading every night for at least 15-20 minutes.

In math, we are working on division strategies. This week, we were working on the Partial Products Method. For example, with a question like 87 ÷ 5, students are asked to use their multiplication facts to get as close to 87 as possible without going over. They need to think multiplication: 5 x ? gets me close to 87 without going over?

If they only know 5 x 10, they can start there. Then they subtract that answer from the total they were dividing and keep repeating the process until there is less than the number they were dividing by left. That number becomes the remainder.

87/5

                                     5x10= 50

87-50= 37

                                     5x7= 35

37-35=2

Then they add up the numbers they multiplied by 5 plus any remainders to get their answer: 10+7= 17R2

Try getting your kiddo to teach it to you:) Later next week we will move into the traditional method.

Wetlands Field Trip

On Tuesday, May 28th, we will be going on our field trip. Please ensure your child is prepared and dressed appropriately for the day with layers, rubber boots, and rainwear if necessary. Since students will be around water, proper footwear is important.

June Field Trip

Just a friendly reminder that permission slips and money need to be in by Friday, June 7th for our end-of-the-year field trip.

Have a great weekend!

Hi Families of 4B,

There's lots happening in 4B. As writers, we've completed our writing assessment, and next week, we'll be diving into our published piece of persuasive writing. I must say that I was very pleased with the students' results on their writing assessment. They certainly provided writing samples that included high-modality words, strong claims, specific and detailed reasons, along with consistent punctuation, capitals, and paragraphing. Rock Stars in 4B! Reading assessments are also ongoing, and our final unit will focus on Poetry.

In Science, our attention will be on the unit about Habitats and Community over the next few weeks. This ties in perfectly with our upcoming field trip to the Wetlands.

In math, we'll be delving into division strategies and practicing the traditional method. Additionally, we'll be revisiting and checking in on all the outcomes we've learned throughout the year.

Field Trip Alert! On Tuesday, May 28th, we're embarking on an educational wetland field trip with Ducks Unlimited. We'll travel by bus to Charlottetown Rural High School to explore wetland ecology and conservation. Students will have the opportunity to use wetland exploration kits and engage in "critter dipping" with an interpreter. As we'll be near water, please ensure your child is dressed appropriately with layers and proper footgear.

Permission slips have also been sent home for our June Field Trip! On Monday, June 24th, we'll be heading out at approximately 9:10 AM to Cineplex to watch the movie Garfield. Following the movie, we'll head to the Murphy Center for lunch (please pack your child's lunch) and some bowling fun. We anticipate returning to school around 2:00 PM. Permission slips and money are due on Friday, June 7th.

Have a wonderful long weekend! Enjoy!

Hi Families of 4B,

Our Writing Workshop continues to be a hit with the students in 4B! Next week, we'll be focusing on preparing for a writing assessment. The task? Composing persuasive pieces of writing. We're placing particular emphasis on crafting strong introductions, providing detailed reasons supported by transition words, and wrapping up with conclusions that reinforce the writer's stance. As assessments are in full swing across all subjects, please ensure your child is well-rested for optimal performance.

In math, we had a great week diving into Perimeter and introducing the concept of Area. I'm happy with the progress our class has made! Our multiplication fact check-ins continue to show improvement each week. Consistent practice at home is key to building confidence and will undoubtedly make tackling our next unit on division much smoother.

In Health class, we delved into important discussions about smoking. I encourage you to continue these conversations at home; it's a valuable topic for family discussion.

Hi Parents of 4B,

We sadly said goodbye to Ms. Sheridan ! She was a wonderful addition to 4B! We congratulate her on her upcoming graduation from the B.Ed program at UPEI and wish her all the best! We will look forward to seeing her again at WRS as a guest teacher.

It was another busy week in 4B! We are continuing to work hard each day as we focus on the curriculum outcomes. In writing, we are continuing to focus on persuasive writing, and I am very proud of the hard work! This week, our mini-lessons focused on developing powerful claim statements, using high-modality words, and rhetorical questions to help convince the reader. Those high-modality words were absolutely, without a doubt, flowing onto the paper and into your child’s writing. Way to go, 4B!

We have wonderful readers in our class, and we continue to read each day in the classroom. Please remind your child that reading homework should happen from Monday to Thursday for at least 15 minutes. This will help to continue strengthening your child’s reading skills and help instill positive reading habits for a lifetime of enjoyment!

In math, we finished up our unit on multiplication by completing a unit check-in. Well done, 4B! Next week, we will begin our unit on Area before moving into division.

Next week in health, we will be exploring and learning about tobacco and its effects on a person’s health. Please be aware that we are mindful that this topic can sometimes feel difficult for some students. Lots of learning is happening in 4B!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Hi Parents of 4B,

Can you believe that we are turning the calendar to May next week? Wow! This week we continued to explore our unit on Persuasive writing. Students ended the week with creating their claim statements and completing their graphic organizers. We are ready to write, write, write as we move into next week. The students of 4B certainly have many strong opinions and it will be a lot of fun to see them come to life in text. Watch out parents!

In science, we are continuing to explore light! Thank you for sending in the flashlights this week! This was great!

In math, we are hoping to finish up our multiplication outcome this coming week. We have been working on getting comfortable with the traditional algorithm and applying our knowledge to solving word problems. We will continue to have our weekly multiplication fact check-ins. Please continue to work on the facts at home. This practice is essential to your child’s confidence and success and will translate directly into a much easier time with division, which we will be tackling next!

Unfortunately, next week is our last week with Ms. Sheridan. We will feel sad to say goodbye, but wish her much luck as she embarks on her new teaching career!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Hi Parents of 4B,

It was a short week at West Royalty School and the best part of the week was the ending. The Pie in the Face event was a huge hit. The laughter, excitement and school spirit was second to none. West Royalty School rocks!

We launched our next unit of study on Persuasive Writing this week. We explored what it means to persuade. The students watched cereal commercials and saw the gimmicks and the intentions of various commercials. Students even had the opportunity to create their own cereal brand with knowledge of how to make their product sell. The creativity was endless and their cereals certainly would be a top seller on the grocery shelves. Our class will certainly be ready to create their persuasive writing pieces as we move forward in this unit of study. Next week our writing will focus on strong introductions and convincing reasons with details focused on a personal example, a fact, a quote, or an example. I love that the students are so engaged!

In Reader’s Workshop, it certainly is a pleasure to watch the engagement and interest in 4B when it is reading time.

In math, we are hoping to finish up our multiplication outcome in the next few weeks. Next week we will be working on getting comfortable with the traditional algorithm and applying our knowledge to solving word problems. We will continue to have our weekly multiplication fact check-ins. Please continue to work on the facts at home. This practice is essential to your child’s confidence and success and will translate directly into a much easier time as we tackle division next!

Earth Day

In preparation for Earth Day on Monday, we decorated grocery bags with pictures and slogans to remind fellow Islanders how important our earth is to everyone. These bags will be used in Sobey’s stores next week.

Enjoy your weekend,

Dear Parents of 4B,

What an exciting week it has been in 4B! Our students have been diving into nonfiction topics they're passionate about, showcasing their expertise through writing. To celebrate their hard work, we organized a carousel activity with 4C, allowing students to explore each other's informative pieces. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to discover new topics and learn about different text features. We were also delighted to welcome Ms. MacLean and Ms. Cameron to witness the wonderful progress our Grade 4 students have made. Well done, students – you absolutely nailed this unit of study!

In math, we're making great strides in our multi-digit multiplication unit. We've been exploring various strategies, including the box method for multiplying three digits by one-digit numbers. It's a different approach from what many of us were taught, but it's proving to be highly effective in building a conceptual understanding before diving into the traditional algorithm. Additionally, we completed another multiplication fact check-ins. This provides students with a clear picture of their progress in memorizing the facts. Today, your child will bring home their results, allowing you to identify any "trouble facts" they may be struggling with. The extra practice at home really makes a difference.

In Science, our focus has shifted to the fascinating topic of light. This week, we kicked off with a crucial lesson on eye safety, especially timely given the recent Solar Eclipse. It's essential for our students to understand how and why it's important to safely view such events.

Thank you for your ongoing support at home. Together, we're making 4B a positive learning environment for our students.

Easter Seals

West Royalty School is participating in our last fundraiser for Easter Seals. Students can purchase a ballot for $1 in which they can add a teacher’s name if they want that teacher to get a pie in the face. On Thursday, April 18, during a school wide assembly, a number of names will be drawn and the event will occur. This event was completed last year and the excitement and school spirit was amazing. Let the fun begin!

Have a great weekend!

Hi Parents of 4B,

It's hard to believe that March Break is behind us and we've already completed the first week of April. The next three months will fly by as we focus on completing curriculum outcomes, reviewing material, and assessing progress. With the weather getting nicer and the days growing longer, it's clear that spring is the season for renewal.

In our writing sessions this past week, we dove back into our digital magazines with the goal of finishing them up next week.

For Health, our morning meetings have centered around goal setting, providing students with valuable skills for personal growth.

In Science, we've embarked on an exciting new unit focusing on light. The anticipation and learning surrounding next week's Solar Eclipse is a perfect fit for our current studies.

In Math, we continue to develop strategies for multiple-digit multiplication. This past week, we utilized base ten blocks to build arrays, aiding in the visualization of multiplication concepts. Please encourage your child to practice their multiplication facts nightly if they aren't yet confident in their recall.

As a friendly reminder, students should be reading for 15-20 minutes each night.

Solar Eclipse

Just a reminder that students will be dismissed at 12:30 on Monday due to the solar eclipse. Your child has received a pair of solar glasses today so they can participate in the event.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

We had another great week in 4B! Congratulations, everyone, for once again filling the marble jar! Woohoo! On Tuesday we will be celebrating our success by having pajama day (optional) and taking a little time to play some board games together. If students wish, they are invited to bring their favourite game.

Students continue to hone in on their skills as writers of Information writing. Many text features are being explored and the content of their topics is broadening. I love that I am seeing evidence of students’  knowledge and growth in this unit of study. Well done 4B!

This week, we ended Black History Month by exploring and celebrating the beautiful artwork of Alma Thomas, a famous Black Artist. Parents, when you are in for Parent Teacher Conferences next week, be sure to check out the inspired art pieces that hang on the classroom wall. The vibrant colors feel like spring…they are beautiful!

In science, we are continuing to explore rocks and minerals. This week we focused our learning on the Rock Cycle.

In Math, we are continuing to do a deep dive into the Multiplication tables. Extra practice at home is very helpful. Thank you!

STEAM PEI

On Tuesday, March 5th, STEAM PEI  will be visiting our classroom. 4B will take part in a  Climate Science Activity called Fast Fashion. This activity aims to give students an understanding of the impact that 'fast fashion' (mass production of cheap, on-trend, clothing) has on our environment and the climate. Students will discuss ways in which they can help with the fast fashion problem and will have an opportunity to design and upcycle a piece of old clothing. Materials will be provided by STEAM PEI, but we encourage students to bring a piece of old clothing they no longer want to class so that they can upcycle it.

Hi Parents of 4B,

This week, we welcomed our pre-service teacher, Katie Sheridan, to our class. Ms. Sheridan is a UPEI education student, and this is her final placement before she graduates in May. We look forward to having Ms. Sheridan with us for the next few months. Thank you, 4B, for being so kind and welcoming and showing Ms. Sheridan how awesome you all are!

Time is slipping by quickly. It is hard to believe that we are preparing for our second set of Parent Teachers Conferences. Students continue to explore the genre Information or Nonfiction in both reading and writing. We have many experts in our room and I love that they are sharing their knowledge with their peers and teacher. Lots of students are on their second piece of writing. The more opportunities students have to write the more they will improve. In regards to reading, we are continuing to dig deeper with comprehension. This includes ACRAR assessments, mini-lessons. Students are working on summarizing/retelling the main events of a story and discovering the author’s big idea or message. These are challenging skills that need a lot of practise.

In Health, we continue to explore social-emotional learning (SEL) during our daily morning meetings. This helps us with important life skills like knowing ourselves, managing our feelings, understanding others, making good choices, and getting along with friends. Giving students a collective language and talking about these ideas together, has helped to create a positive classroom culture. Great job, 4B!

In Math, we are continuing our exploration of decimals, and we plan to conclude this topic next week before shifting our focus to Multiplication. We will continue practicing with multiplication stations.

Hi Parents and Students of 4B,

Congratulations 4B, for once again filling the marble jar! Woohoo!! Yesterday, we took some time to celebrate the positive choices we made this past month…A well-deserved bit of fun for all!

This past week we started a new unit of study on Information/Nonfiction writing. The students are reading nonfiction and beginning to become aware of what counts in information writing. Our focus this week was also on exploring and understanding the text features found in non-fiction texts. We discussed their purpose and how they help the reader better understand and comprehend the information in the text. As we continue to work on creating our non-fiction books, I look forward to students adding a variety of these text features in their writing.

In math, we have started “Multiplication Station Fridays'' This will begin to prepare us for our upcoming unit on multiplication of large numbers. During station time, students will work at a self pacing level, focusing on the learning and understanding of multiplication facts to 10x10. Nightly practice at home is encouraged to help your child reach mastery. Practice, practice, practice!! I will be sending home an information letter that will help support families with home practice.

Outdoor Weather

Just a reminder that the cold weather has arrived and students should dress accordingly…snow pants, hats, mitts, snow boots. Outdoor play is much more enjoyable when you are warm.

Food Donations

Thank you to those who have already sent in donations. We will continue to accept food donations until the end of January. All food donations will be distributed to families in our own school community.

Feb. 19 - Islander Day/No School

Hi Parents of 4B,

We had another busy week in our classroom. Students are working on a Habitat for Humanity Canada contest which is two fold: students get practice with writing and they are also helping support our local Habitat for Humanity chapter. Students are pondering and expressing their thoughts on the question…What does home mean to you? For each entry submitted, our local Habitat for Humanity chapter will receive a $10  donation to help with builds. Students also have the opportunity to win individual prizes.  Your child was sent home with the specific details and a permission slip that had to be signed. Please return the form early next week. Thank you!

This week in math, I introduced some new learning with decimals as they relate to  fractions, money and  place value. Next week our focus will move into comparing and ordering decimals from least to greatest, and adding and subtracting with decimals.

Art Discovery Day

The Grade 4 students at West Royalty School will be participating in an Art Discovery Day at the Confederation Centre of the Arts. We will be attending this event on Thursday, February 8. This will be a full day event with students leaving around 9:00 AM and returning to the school at 2:00 PM. Students will need to pack a lunch and bring a drink. There will be no microwave services available. This activity also requires a permission form to be signed. This form is also attached for signature. Please sign and return ASAP. The Art Discovery Day is free, but we do have to charge for bussing. The bussing fee is $4 per student. Please pay through the the QR code that was sent home on the information sheet or pay on line with the link below.

Keep Warm,

Week of Jan. 15 - 19

Dates to Remember

Feb. 14 - Valentine’s Day

Feb. 16 - Winter Wellness Day

Feb. 19 - Islander Day/No School

Hi Parents & Students of 4B,

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday!

We had a great first week back at school and everyone seems happy and ready to be back in class! Re-establishing the routines and expectations is important so that we can continue to focus on our learning in the classroom. Thank you 4B, for your hard work and effort and helping to make this transition back to school an easy one for everyone!

In Language Arts, our focus this week has been on reviewing our Foundational Learnings covered so far. As readers, students practiced their written comprehension. We are certainly digging deeper with our reading! Students also created and presented their 2024 digital Vision Boards to the class! Well done! It looks like great things are coming for 4B this year!

In math, we spent the week reviewing the Foundational Learnings we covered so far this year and continued our new learning around decimals and how they relate to fractions.. Way to go 4B! You were showing real grit!

This week we introduced a class project  that we will be taking part in next week called   “Meaning of Home” . It is a contest in support of Habitat for Humanity Canada. Helping families build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership, one entry at a time! The students will each write a short essay  about what home means to them.  Each entry results in a $10 donation to our local Habitat for Humanity chapter.  By participating students will have the opportunity to realize the importance of how giving back to the community can make a difference. It will be  a worthwhile fun activity!

In art, we explored the works of a famous Canadian artist,Ted Harrison. With Harrison’s creative style in mind, we hope to paint landscape images that will beautifully decorate our hallway.

Food Donations

Since the beginning of the school year, each grade level has been designated a month to bring in non-perishable food items to help support our families within our community. Grade 4 students are on for the month of January. We will be accepting donations until the end of this month. Any support you can provide would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Homework

The holiday season is now over and we are back to normal programming. Please make sure your child starts 2024 with good homework habits. Your child should be reading for 15-20 minutes each night from Monday to Friday. Best practices include the following, but are not limited to…

-quiet space to read

-consistent routine of when homework is to be completed

-weekly check-in with some comprehension questions regarding material read

-reading various genres

-building a love for reading

Have a fabulous weekend!

Week of Dec. 18 - 22

Dates to Remember

Dec. 22 -  School Wide Pajama Day/Last day of classes for 2023

Jan. 8 - First day of school for 2024

Hi Parents & Students of 4B,

The Christmas season is upon us and lots of excitement is building in our classroom. We are certainly continuing our work, but allowing some time for fun. This week we finished our All About Me health presentations, started a small unit of study on graphic novels./comics, made cinnamon gingerbread ornaments, and we did some Christmas yoga.. Next week we will continue to explore this genre of writing while sprinkling in a few more Christmas activities.

In math, we had a great week of learning around fractions and we will continue to make this our focus for next week too. We tackled finding a fraction of a set this week. This is a challenging topic and it requires a lot of practice to master. For example students may be asked to find ¾ of 16. First, they need to think of the denominator as the number of groups they should divide 16 evenly into. In this case 16 divided by 4 is 4 in each group. Then, the numerator tells us how many groups to count. If we count 3 groups with 4 in each, we have 12. Therefore, ¾ of 16=12.

Please note that this will be our last Weekly Update until the new year. I want to wish everyone an absolutely wonderful Christmas and holiday season. May you have time to relax, laugh and be with the people you love.

Take Care,

Barb

Week of Dec. 11 - Dec. 15

Dates to Remember

Dec. 22 -  School wide Pajama Day/Last day of classes for 2023

Hi Parents and students of 4B,

We had a great day celebrating the filling of our marble jar! Thank you 4B!

This week in writing the students completed their published piece of narrative writing and we had a writing celebration. Ms. MacLean and Ms. Cameron also stopped by to congratulate the hard work of all students. Well done writers! We celebrated by sharing compliments with one another, and enjoying  buttercream cupcakes!

In health, we will continue to share our, “All About Me” health presentations to the class.

In math, we had a great week of learning around fractions and we will continue to make this our focus for next week.

The walls in the 3-4 hallway have never looked better! This week in art 4B put their painting talents to work and created very lively and unique holiday gnomes. So much fun!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Barb

Week of Dec. 4 - Dec. 8

Dates to Remember

Dec. 22 - Last day of classes for 2023

Hi Families of 4B,

December is here!. I just want to send out a great big thanks to those families who have supported our recent fundraisers and also the Christmas Families event. It is much appreciated and it will certainly make students from West Royalty happy on Christmas Day.

Students continue to work very hard, especially in writing as they continue to work on their small moment that they are now taking to publishing. Composing a small moment may sound like an easy task, but students have certainly realized that a writer’s job is much more complex. Writers need to hook their reader, they need to add specific details that show rather than tell, adding powerful leads and exciting endings. They also need to use transition words, and as always students need to apply punctuation. The published pieces will be amazing!

In health, we will continue to share our All About Me health presentations to the class.

In math this week, we finished up our adding and subtracting outcome and  moved  into fractions. No outcome is done in isolation and we consistently touch back, particularly when it comes to problem solving, as that is an area where more practice is always helpful.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Barb

Week of Nov. 27 - Dec. 1

Dates to Remember:

Nov. 27 & 28 (After School) - EAL Conferences

Dec. 22 - Last School Day for 2023

Hi Parents & Students of 4B,

Thank you parents for attending the Parent Teacher Conferences this week. I felt very grateful having the opportunity to sit down face to face to share your child’s successes. As we move into our second term, I am excited and hopeful that the learning and fun in 4B will continue!

Next week students will be finishing their unit of study on Personal Narrative. Students will be picking their best piece of writing and publishing it. We will have a small celebration to conclude the unit next Friday. Please watch for your child’s published piece to come home.. You will be impressed to see strong introductions, transition words, specific details, strong conclusions and punctuation. Way to go 4B!

In Health, we are finishing up our “All About Me” slide shows. We will begin to share these over the next week or two. I am amazed at their level of ease with technology and watching them interact with google slides. I look forward to some awesome presentations!

In math, we have been continuing on with our problem solving in addition and subtraction.

Christmas Families

Envelopes were sent home last week with students with information about supporting Christmas families in our school community. If you are able to help, please send a donation back in the envelope with your child.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Nov. 16 & 17 - PEITF Convention / No School

Nov. 21 - Learning Reports sent home

Nov. 23 (Evening) & 24 (Day) - Parent Teacher Conferences / No School

Hi Parents & Students of 4B,
Parent Teacher Conferences are fast approaching. Thank you to those who have signed up already. I look forward to sharing all the wonderful things your child is doing in the classroom. The online platform will be open until November 15 at 4:00 PM.

As we close out this week, we continue to move ahead with curriculum outcomes. In math, we have been working on our addition strategies and learned a new left to right strategy which has students adding the place values from left to right. Ex:876+453=

Add: Hundreds + Hundreds  800+400= 1200

          Tens + Tens                 70+50 =  120

           Ones + Ones                 6+3  =      9

Then add  H+T+O     1200+120+9+  =1329

We also focused on practice with the traditional method and regrouping.

This week we started working on a health project which involves students creating a slide show presentation about themselves and highlighting ways they stay healthy mentally, physically and socially. It is a great cross-curricular project that also tackles many writing, technology and speaking outcomes.  Students were also busy participating in a Remembrance Day contest. Our class completed pieces of art depicting symbols and images of Remembrance Day. Maybe some lucky student from our class will win a prize. Seeing that next week is a short week, there will be no Weekly Update. I look forward to seeing everyone the following week.

Empty Cans

Empty cans needed!!!!! Empty cans needed!

It is hard to believe that we are nearing the end of another month at school. The days and weeks are slipping away quickly. On Tuesday, October 31st we will celebrate Halloween with orange and black day. If you would like to send in a treat for the class to share that would be welcome. Please remember we are a nut-free school.

Our days are flying by, as we are busy in both Reading and Writing Workshop! We have been making many connections on how they overlap and support one another. Students are learning about paragraphs, they are busy trying to Adopt a Monster, and we finished off the week by filling our Marble Jar which allowed the students free time on the Chromebooks and enjoying a cupcake treat! In Math, we will be moving into strategies for addition and subtraction. I am also busy completing my assessments.   We are rocking and rolling in 4B!

Hi Parents of 4B,

It took some juggling, but we finally were able to travel to Bonshaw Provincial Park. Our day of outdoor learning was amazing. Many subject areas were involved from Science, Phys—Ed, to Language Arts. The students also participated in an art creation with Andy Goldsworthy being their inspiration.  We took a picture of each art piece and sent it to Take Me Outside Day: A Celebration Of Outdoor Learning. The photos will be used, along with photos from other schools, to create a giant mosaic.

This week in writing, we continued to work on paragraph development, focusing on the structure of a good paragraph, while practicing this skill in our writing. In Reader’s Workshop, students are continuing to build stamina as readers. The expectation is that students will complete and present a book review on a book read, before the end of November.  I am happy to see some book reviews are starting to roll in. This is a great opportunity for us to share recommendations of some good reads with each other.

Next week in math, we will be continuing to practice our rounding skills by estimating sums and differences. Then we will be moving on to adding and subtracting numbers to 10 000 and we will be using base ten blocks to show regrouping concretely.

West Royalty School Halloween Dance Party

Time is getting short to purchase your tickets. Deadline is Tuesday, October 24. The cost is $5.00 per person and an adult must accompany students. The event is open from 6:00 - 7:30 PM.

Hi Parents of 4B,

Another great week in Grade 4! Students are busy reading books they enjoy, writing with an emphasis on building stamina, adding descriptive language and paragraph writing.

This week in math, we discussed when it is appropriate to estimate versus calculating an exact answer. If you are out and about this weekend, have your child look for opportunities when it would make sense to estimate (apple picking, how many pumpkins in the patch) and when it is important to be precise (paying for groceries). We also reviewed rounding, and next week we will continue to work on this and begin to use some estimating strategies for adding sums.

Bonshaw Provincial Park Field Trip

Because of the wet weather on Friday, we will be going on our field trip to Bonshaw this Tuesday. We will be leaving at approximately 9:00 AM and will be returning at 2:00 PM. Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather. Layers are best and don't forget walking footwear. Students will need to bring a lunch and drink for this day. Students may be extra hungry so a few extra snacks might be welcomed.

West Royalty School Halloween Dance Party

Week of October 9-13

Dates to Remember:

October 9th - Thanksgiving / No School

October 27th - Professional Development Day / No School

Hi Families of 4B,

As we approach the long Thanksgiving weekend, it is a perfect time to discuss what one is grateful for on this special weekend. We certainly are promoting this growth mindset of gratitude as we journey through each day at school. Positivity and optimism are contagious and we want that to be our theme for the school year.

Writing Workshop is well on its way in 4B  and I am so pleased with the level of engagement! They literally knocked my shoes off this week! As we get further into our Narrative unit,  I am excited to see the stories that will be told by our young writers!

In math this week, we continued to focus on N2, Ordering and Comparing Numbers. We spent a lot of time exploring and demonstrating our understanding of number lines. Well done 4B!  Next, we will move into estimation.

Bonshaw Provincial Park Field Trip

On Friday we will be traveling to Bonshaw for an outdoor field trip. Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather. Layers are best and don't forget walking footwear. Students will need to bring a lunch and drink for this day. Students may be extra hunger so a few extra snacks might be welcomed. Grade 4B is very excited about this outdoor learning day.

Battery Blitz

West Royalty School has begun our annual battery blitz for 2023. We will be collecting batteries for the month of October. The top 3 schools with the highest weight of batteries will win cash prizes ($3000 for first, $2000 for second, and $1000 for third).

Colder Weather

The weather has been exceptionally beautiful for October, but as we know it can be very unpredictable so layers are a good option as some days are warm and others are cool. When we are dressed for the weather, recess is much more enjoyable.

Utensils

The PEI School Food Program and the Hotlunch Vendors do not provide single-use plastics such as straws and cutlery to our students. Students must bring their own cutlery to school. Please ensure you send in utensils with your child’s lunch if they require them.

Headphones

Just a reminder about sending in a pair of headphones for your child. Please have them in a Ziploc bag and labeled. Thank you to those parents who have already done so.

Happy Thanksgiving! May your long weekend be filled with family, laughter, and some of your favorite comfort foods.

Week of October 2 - 6

Dates to Remember:

October 2nd - National Day of Truth & Reconciliation / No School

October 9th - Thanksgiving / No School

October 27th - Professional Development Day / No School

Hi Parents and Students of 4B,

It is hard to believe that September is over! Where did the days go?! Our routines and expectations are well underway and we are busy learning new curriculum content in all subject areas. I am especially pleased with how awesome our Writing Workshop went this week!  We are focusing  on building our writing stamina and goal setting, and WOW!  We decorated the front of our writer’s notebooks by personalizing them to represent our own uniqueness.  They look amazing! As Reading Workshop continues, I am beginning to see an excitement for reading grow! We have been building our reading stamina and I’m hoping this momentum will just keep building as the year rolls on! In Health, we have been working on growth mindset, kindness, friendships, and teamwork.. All important skills for the classroom and as lifelong learners.

In math, we are wrapping up our first couple of outcomes, N1 and N2, Representing and comparing numbers to 10 000. Representing Numbers includes being able to use place value to explain the meaning of digits in a given number, as well as showing numbers using a variety of representations such as written, expanded form, and with base ten blocks. Next week we will focus on ordering and comparing numbers and then we will be moving into adding and subtracting!

We had a ton of fun this week with a Lego STEAM challenge. I hope you heard all about the fantastic settlements they designed which met all their basic needs.

Terry Fox

Thanks to all families for your support of our Terry Fox run/walk. Our school raised $2000 towards this worthy cause. Congrats! Well done!

Marble Jar

We celebrated filling our marble jar by inviting 4C  to play Hide & Seek in the snake path. It was so much fun! We have lots to celebrate and we are well on our way to filling it again!

Utensils

The PEI School Food Program and the Hotlunch Vendors do not provide single-use plastics such as straws and cutlery to our students. Students must bring their own cutlery to school. Please ensure you send in utensils with your child’s lunch if they require them.

Hi Parents and Students of 4B,

Our classroom is certainly getting more established as the weeks progress. Reader’s Workshop is well underway and we are getting the foundation set for building a strong Writer’s Workshop classroom. In Health, we are working on growing our growth mindset through books, videos and discussions. This skill will certainly help your child approach difficult tasks with more confidence. As adults, we know life is not always easy and the more strategies we can teach our children the more successful they will be as they grow to adulthood.

Homework

Our first week of homework is complete. I hope all went well at your house. Please help support your child by reminding them that they need to read each night for 20 minutes.  I appreciate your support to help foster a love of reading. Also, extra practice with math skills will help to build confidence. Next week, I will be sending home a practice math page with your child. This will give you an opportunity to see what your child is working on and how they are doing.

MarbleJar

Woohoo! We have filled our marble jar! Students in 4B have been working extremely hard on establishing a classroom that is respectful, safe and caring for all. When positive behaviour and choices have been made, we celebrate by putting a marble in our marble Jar. We will celebrate our success next week with some extra fun!

Truth & Reconciliation Day

Because National Day of Truth & Reconciliation is a holiday, we will be celebrating and learning about this important historical event on Thursday, September 28.  Truth & Reconciliation Day is an opportunity to create meaningful discussion about the effects of Residential Schools and the legacy they have left behind. Every Child Matters, is an affirmation of our commitment to raise awareness of the residential school experience and to ensure that every child matters as we focus on our hope for a better future in which children are empowered to help each other.

Terry Fox Run

West Royalty School will be having our Terry Fox Run this Wednesday. If each student could bring in a toonie, the money raised would certainly go to a great cause. Thanks for your support!

Headphones

Just a reminder about sending in a pair of headphones for your child. Please have them in a Ziploc bag and labeled. Thank you to those parents who have already done so.

Hi Families,

We have just finished our first full week of school and it was absolutely wonderful. I have enjoyed starting to get to know your amazing kiddos and I am totally impressed with each and every one of them. I have a great feeling about this year! . Everyone seems to be settling in well and we are already working on routines and expectations. My main focus has been getting to know your child and helping to make them feel safe and relaxed so learning can happen. We have started Reader’s Workshop, Health and Technology with a focus on our Google Classroom.

As we move into next week, we will continue on with team building activities that encourage inclusiveness and supporting one another. We will also build upon Reader’s Workshop and introduce Writer’s Workshop.

Homework

It is important that students start their routine this week regarding homework. Students should be reading for 20 minutes each night. They can read a book from home or they can read the book they are reading at school. The second option is usually a favorite as it helps build momentum.

Headphones

We are asking all students to bring in a set of inexpensive headphones that can be used throughout the year when using the chrome books. They will remain at school and will only be used by your child. Please have this item in a plastic bag and labeled with your child’s name. We would like to have these in by next week so we can begin using them. Thanks so much for your support.

Terry Fox Run/Walk

West Royalty will be participating in our Terry Fox Run/Walk on Wednesday, September 27. We typically ask for a $2 donation per student.  Students are welcome to bring more if they wish.  Also, you can donate online…  https://schools.terryfox.ca/WestRoyaltySchool
