Welcome Back!
I hope everyone enjoyed March Break and Easter. The next three months will fly by. There will be lots of learning happening in 3H and Ms. Murphy will be with us until May 2. The weather is getting nicer but the ground is wet and there are lots of puddles. If your child has splash pants to bring to school, they would help to keep their clothes dry over the next few weeks.
Reminder: Monday, April 8, we will be dismissing school at 12:30 (2 hours early) because of the Solar Eclipse. We will be following the Early Closure Plan you submitted in the Fall…UNLESS, you send a note indicating a different BUS drop. We will not be holding any students as all staff and students are dismissing at this time. If you wish to pick up your child, you must do so NO LATER than 12:30pm and please send a note indicating a pick up.
Solar eclipse glasses have been purchased for all students and staff and will be distributed to students later in the week. PEI will be experiencing a total solar eclipse on April 8th, 2024. For safe viewing protocol, please see the CPHO website: https://solareclipse.princeedwardisland.ca/Safely-Watch
In math we will continue to work on skip counting patterns, addition and subtraction with regrouping, multiplication and division. We will also begin working on Fractions later in the month. Please continue to practice math facts at home with your child.
In Language Arts, we are working on persuasive writing, where students have to write convincing arguments for things. They need to include an introduction, three reasons why they believe what they do and a conclusion.
Dates to Remember:
April 19th – Professional Development Day (NO SCHOOL)
May 3 rd – Area Association Day (NO SCHOOL)
Happy New Year!🎉🥳
Thank you for all your support in 2023 and for all the lovely gifts and cards I received from students!
January is a busy month at Westwood. There is a lot of learning that will take place with a good stretch of time in school.
We will begin non-fiction reading and writing this month. We will immerse ourselves in non-fiction texts at school. Any non-fiction reading you can do at home with your child would be wonderful. We will start off by writing about things they know a lot about (themselves, the school, etc.) Then we will move into some animal research using books, Epic books and National Geographic Kids. Students will also learn different parts non-fiction texts (index, table of contents, tables, captions, diagrams, headings etc.).
In math, we will continue to work on 2 and 3 digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping. This part of the curriculum is often more challenging for students so we spend quite a bit of time working on this. Continue to practice math facts at home to help with quick recall.
In spelling, we will continue to work on a new principle each week and practice words at school and home. We will have spelling homework beginning the first week back.
Winter weather is upon us. Please remind your child to have snow pants, mitts and a hat with him/her each day. It is often helpful to pack extra mitts, as they get wet during first playtime. It is also important to have extra clothes in kitbags in case clothing gets wet at playtime. Extra socks always help, as students don't like wet feet!
This month in writing we are focusing on punctuation. The students are learning about the different types of punctuation and working on adding them properly into their writing. We are doing some free writing, prompt writing, and writing about reading. It is a nice change as they have been working on narrative/small moment writing for the past couple of months.
In math we are working on rounding numbers, estimating sums/differences, and 2 digit addition and subtraction. We will move into 3 digit addition and subtraction in the new year. Continued practice of the students' basic math facts to 20 and skip counting at home is really helpful to get these skills solid.
Spelling words will only be sent home for the first week in December (4th-8th). We will continue to work on different principles in class but the students will not be quizzed at the end of the week. December can be a very busy time for families so if you can continue to do some reading and a practice some math a couple of times a week that would be great!
Mr. Dyment will be finishing up his time with 3H and we will be very sad to see him go. The students have all enjoyed having him in our room. We hope he will be back to visit sometime! His last day with us will be December 14th. We're wishing his all the best as he continues with his course work and then moves onto another preservice teacher placement in the the spring.
The students are also welcome to dress in holiday attire or their pjs on December 22nd.
Happy Holidays to you all! I hope you get to enjoy time with your family over the break and I can't wait to hear all about it from the students in the new year. If the holidays are a difficult time for you and your family, please don't hesitate to reach out to the school and we will support you as best we can.
Dates to Remember:
December 14th - Mr. Dyment's last day with 3H
December 22nd - Last Day of Classes 2023 - students can wear holiday sweaters or PJs

First of all, a huge thank you to parents who signed up and sent in pumpkins and treats for Halloween. The children really enjoyed everything and had a great day at Fall Frolic.
Keegan Dyment, a pre-service teacher from UPEI joined 3H last week and will be with us until December 14. The students are enjoying having him here and taking part in the learning activities he plans for the class.
I also wanted to update you on some of the learning and activities that will be taking place in 3H. In writing we are going to continue to work on personal narrative stories along with some other writing activities. Students are encouraged to write several sentences on one topic with capital and end punctuation. Extra writing practice at home would be beneficial. I encourage students to continue to read nightly for 10-15 minutes. If you are finding the books too hard (or too easy) please contact me. In math, we continue to practice counting by 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, and 25 forward and backward. We are also working on time (hour and ½ hour) addition and subtraction.
I look forward to seeing you during Parent/Teacher conferences to discuss your child’s progress.

Happy Fall!
It has been wonderful getting to know your children over these past few weeks. We are off to a great start! If you have not already filled out the "Getting to Know Your Child" survey, please take a minute to fill it out. I have loved reading all of the responses so far. It is so helpful!
This month in math we will continue to work on our Number Sense outcomes. The students will be working on counting forward and backward up to 1000 and skip counting. We will also be comparing and ordering numbers.
In writing, the students will continue to write small moment stories. We are talking about the things that writers add to their writing to make it interesting and I am already seeing them try things like adding sound words, talking, and descriptive words.
In Social Studies, we have been working on places in Canada. We will be continuing to learn about PEI in the coming month.
Other notes:
If you have signed up to send in plastic untensils for the class and you have not sent them in with your child yet, it would be great if they could be sent in soon. I have had a few students looking for utensils.
Please send in an inexpensive pair of headphones to be used with the Chrome Books. Thank you to all of you that have sent these things in already!

I will update this site regularly to keep you up to date on what we have been doing in the classroom and what the month ahead will look like. Though we may not start homework right away it is important for students to bring their homework bag back and forth to school each day. The homework bag will have different notices from myself or the school or other important information you may need. If you need to send in a note for any reason you can also send this along in the homework bag. Once we get started doing daily homework, I will be sending all of this information in the homework duo-tang.
Please note that the school is sending home information sheets that we require you to fill out. Please return these to the school as quickly as possible so we can update the important information regarding your child(ren).
Please feel free to call us at school 368-6855 if you have questions or concerns. You can also reach me by email lymackinnon@edu.pe.ca (note that I may not be able to respond until the end of day. If you are changing your child’s end of day routine please call the office)
Sincerely,
Ms. Lori
