Dear 3B Families,
I hope you had a nice long weekend. I look forward to seeing you for interviews this week. Learning reports go home on Tuesday. Tuesday is also picture retake day. Last week, we finished the Thumbody program. A parent information sheet went home on Wednesday. I hope you received it. If not, have a look in your child’s homework bag.
Homework:
Please remember to have your child fill out the nightly reading log.
Reading for 10-15 minutes. There is a sheet in the homework duotang with possible ‘talk time’ comprehension questions. Please ask your child a few questions after he/she has read to you.
Math: 10 minutes/nightly. Their username and password is glued in the inside cover of their duotang.
If you are finding it hard to get onto IXL nightly here are a few suggestions for Math:
Review Math games in the homework duotang. I added a new game this week for the Make 10 strategy. The object of the game is to be the first person to get 3 in a row. You will need a die. Player 1 rolls and covers the number that would make 10. For example, if the player rolled 3, think 3 + what makes 10? The missing addend is 7 so the player covers 7 on the board. I have also photocopied the Make 12 game for those who want more of a challenge. We played both games in class.
Any Math sheets that I send home that are incomplete or need fixed up is a great Math homework review. These sheets will be in the black homework bag when I send home.
Count by 5’s, 10’s and 100’s from any number 1-1000 forwards and backwards.
Represent a 3 digit number by: (The kids complete this activity most days for their morning routine. When completing homework, use a piece of paper and add it to the duotgang.

Partner Game: Each person will roll a number cube 3 times to make a 3 digit number. Compare your numbers. The person with the greater number wins the point. Game goes to 10. For extra practice, your child can write the equations on paper using the greater than/ less than/ equal to symbols.
Choose 3 different numbers (ie 3, 7, 2) to make as many 3 digit numbers as possible. Write the numbers in order from least to greatest/greatest to least. (237, 273, 327, 372, 723, 732)
Please return the homework bag/duotang daily.
Have a great week,
Charlene

Dear 3B Families,
It was so nice to see so many kids at the Halloween Dance on Friday night! The costumes were amazing! This week is a short week as there is a PD on Friday. Thursday will be wear black/orange day to celebrate Halloween. 3B is excited to have Paige Wall, a pre-service teacher, join us until December 12th. Paige is in the B Ed program at UPEI.

Fundations: We had our first unit test for Fundations on Wednesday. We started with unit 2, week 1. I will add another information sheet to the duotang this week that explains what the lessons have been on. I will be sending home a review sheet for homework again this week.
Reading and Writing Workshop:
The children have been working on writing personal narratives in their writer’s notebooks. Last week, they learned about finding ideas for writing:
Think of a person who matters to you, list small moments, choose one and write the whole story.
Think of a place that matters, map small moments, choose one, write it.
A storyteller’s voice:
Describes actions that took place
Uses dialogue.
Describes what we saw, smelled, tasted or felt.
Describes images around the storyteller.
This week, they will be choosing a ‘seed’ idea and learning how to elaborate in order to paint a word picture.
Guided reading groups are going well. I have been enjoying listening to the children talk about books in a small group setting.
Hot Lunches:
When ordering food, please make sure your child’s name and class (3B) is clearly typed onto the online order form. Please pack a fork for your child as we do not have any at the school.
Have a great week!
Dear 3B Families,
I hope you had a nice weekend. Last week, we had school photos taken. If your child was absent, there will be a retake day soon. The weather has been beautiful lately but please have your child be prepared for colder days. Last week, there was a colder day and some students were not prepared for it. Please make sure that your child has a snack/lunch as we do not have any extras available at school. Also, please check your child’s hot lunch orders weekly to ensure that items are ordered. There have been instances where children don’t have lunch because they thought they had ordered. Thank you in advance. The Halloween dance is this Friday. Tickets are still available for $5 per person.

Dear 3B Families,
I hope you had a nice weekend. This week, we are continuing to collect old batteries. We have an Earth Rangers presentation Tuesday morning that ties in with our battery blitz. Tuesday morning is also the Zone meet for Cross Country at Elliot River School. Good luck to some of our 3B kiddos that will be attending. Wednesday afternoon, we have some Charlottetown islander players launching the ‘Breakaway for Books reading incentive. Each evening that a student completes a reading achievement (15 min. Of reading), parents will sign the back of the bookmark. After earning ten signatures, the bookmark will be returned to their teacher to receive a certificate of achievement signed by Islanders Head Coach Jim Hulton and a complimentary ticket to an upcoming Charlottetown Islanders regular-season home game to celebrate their success. There is no limit on how many bookmarks students can submit.
Remember to check the Google Site on a regular basis. I have decided that I would also email my parent letter today just in case parents are not accessing the Google Site yet.

Dear 3B Families,
I hope you and your family are having a nice weekend. Tomorrow is Orange Shirt Day at school. We will be observing Truth and Reconciliation. The kids have been learning about Childrens’ rights and responsibilities. One of the lessons tomorrow will be connecting what they have been learning to the residential schools. Friday will be our rescheduled Terry Fox Run. If you haven’t donated and would like to, we are still collecting. The annual battery blitz is starting tomorrow. It’s a great time to get rid of your old batteries!!
I will be ordering the Scholastic Book orders that I received. Thank you for your orders. I have added information to the Google site in the student section with the code. If you are interested in ordering books, you make an order online and then it is delivered to the school. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Dear 3B Families,
I hope everyone had a nice weekend. It was another nice one! Just a reminder that there is no school for the kids tomorrow as it is a professional development day for teachers.
The children are settling into the routines of third grade. I am very impressed with them. A reminder that homework bags should travel back and forth every day.
Last week, I sent home a Scholastic book order form. These are completely voluntary. I have added information to the Google site in the student section with the code. If you are interested in ordering books, you make an order online and then it is delivered to the school. If you have any questions, please let me know.
We are collecting donations for Terry Fox this week.

Dear 3B Families,
I hope everyone had a nice weekend. It was beautiful. We had a great field trip on Friday. We visited 2 farms- Living Lab Farms and Prairie Family Dairy Farm. At the Living Lab Farm, we had a tractor/ wagon ride around the fields where they do research. At the dairy farm, the children learned where our milk comes from. I have added a few photos of our morning in the photos section on the Google Site.
When ordering food, please make sure your child’s name and class (3B) is clearly typed onto the online order form. Please pack a fork for your child as we do not have any at the school.
The plan is to begin homework tomorrow. I will have the children choose homework books Monday. In their homework duotang, there is a recording sheet for them to write their book titles in. I tried adding the class to IXL but there seems to be issues with space. I am awaiting further instructions so this website will not be used for homework this week. Instead, have your child count by 2, 5, 10 to 100 forwards and backwards starting at different spots (for example: say to your child: start at 25 and count forwards by 5’s to 50. Start at 80 and count backwards by 10’s to 0. Start at 20 and count backwards by 2’s to 10 etc.). In class, we have been playing catch with a beach ball so if you have a ball at home, this activity can be done by playing a game of catch!
Have a great week!
Charlene
Dear 3B Families,
I hope everyone had a nice weekend. We have the first 2 days of Grade 3 down! The children are settling back into routines well. We will be having a school fire drill tomorrow morning. The children have practiced and know we are having a drill tomorrow.
We will continue with getting to know one another this week with beginning of the year activities. I am planning to read the story ‘The Name Jar’ by Yangsook Chio this week. I would like you to have a conversation with your child about how you chose their names (first and middle) and what their name means, if you know. We will be working on a writing activity where they will write about their names.
Please return the forms that were sent home on Thursday. I sent the black homework bags home on Friday with some children. If the bag was returned, the forms are not completed or are missing signatures.
The school food programs begin tomorrow. Please pack a fork for your child as we do not have any at the school.
We are going on a field trip on Friday. The permission form was sent home with the information package. Please return by tomorrow.
Our School website is https://edu.princeedwardisland.ca/westroyalty/ The website has a lot of information for parents and students.
I will be using a Google Site for communication this year. This is where I will be writing my weekly update. The link is https://sites.google.com/cloud.edu.pe.ca/3b-west-royalty-2024-25?usp=sharing please be sure to check it on a regular basis in order to keep up to date on what is happening in 3B. I will update it at least once a week.
I look forward to meeting you during Meet the Staff night, Tuesday, September 10th at 6 pm or 6:30 pm (choose one time). I will be going over what life will be like in 3B, schedules, curriculum, homework expectations and attendance.
Take care,
Charlene
