Weekly Blog

june 19-23

Hi Everyone,

Happy Father's Day to all the 2/3Y dads! I hope you all had a good weekend! It's hard to believe that this week is our last full week of school for this year!  The last day of school for students is Wednesday, June 28th.  Student's had a great time at Orwell Corner last week and are excited to head to Kings Castle this week.

Kings Castle Field trip - Our field trip to Kings Castle is Monday, June 19th.  If the field trip has to be postponed due to weather, parents will be sent an email by 7:30am.  Rain date is Tuesday, June 20th.  Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately.  I suggest dressing in layers regardless of the weather. It is easier to remove a jacket or sweater if they are too warm than it is to warm up if they do not have a jacket or sweater to put on. Please put sunscreen on your child before school. We will be leaving school around 9:00am and returning shortly after 2:00pm.

There is a canteen there where students can purchase a small treat.  Please only send enough money for them to buy 1 treat.  $5.00 should be more than enough money for a treat.  Student’s will be responsible for keeping track of their own money.

Students should bring the following:

Books - If you have any library books or classroom books at home, please send them to school ASAP.  We are trying to get everything organized for next year.

Water Bottles - With warmer weather here please make sure your child has a water bottle with them everyday.

Fun Day - Friday, June 23rd is our Fun Day.  We will be outside all morning.  Please put sunscreen on your child before sending them to school. We will also be having hot dogs for lunch.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to email me alcoulson@edu.pe.ca

Dates to remember:

June 19th - Field Trip to Kings Castle (rain date June 20th) - Students will need a packed lunch for this day

June 23rd - Fun Day

June 28th - Last day of school

Have a great week!

I hope you all had a good weekend!

Orwell Corner - Our field trip to Orwell Corner is Tuesday, June 13th.  We will be going rain or shine so please make sure your child is dressed appropriately.  I suggest dressing in layers regardless of the weather. It is easier to remove a jacket or sweater if they are too warm than it is to warm up if they do not have a jacket or sweater to put on.  Students will need to be on time for school as we will be leaving soon after the morning announcements.

Students should bring the following to Orwell Corner:

Water Bottles - With warmer weather here please make sure your child has a water bottle with them everyday.

Personal Safety Unit - We finished up the grade 2 section of the Personal Safety Unit.  On Thursday the grade 3s started their section.  We will finish up the grade 3 section this week.

Math homework supplies - At the beginning of the year I sent home a ziploc bag of things for students to use with their math homework.  The bag had a deck of cards, counters, and 2 dice in it.  If you have not already sent this back to school, please send it in as soon as possible.

Students have been loving our Mystery reading unit.  Last week we started writing a class mystery and students each started to write their own mysteries.  They are loving writing a mystery together as a class, and are very engaged in writing their own.

In grade 3 math we are continuing to review previously learned outcomes.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to email me alcoulson@edu.pe.ca

Hi Everyone,

I hope you all enjoyed the beautiful weekend!

We arrived at school today to find a surprise, our caterpillars have made the transition into their next stage and are now in their chrysalis! In about a week we should have butterflies.

Personal Safety Unit - We will be starting  the Personal Safety Unit of our health curriculum in the next couple of days.  I am sending home an information sheet today for you to read over so that you know what we will be discussing in class.  Our whole class will participate in the grade 2 section of the program (this will be a reivew for grade 3s as they did this last year).  I will be doing the grade 3 section of the program during our math time, so that the grade 2s will not be participating in the grade 3 part.  Grade 3 students will get both the letter for the grade 2 section and the grade 3 section.  Grade 2s will only get the grade 2 letter since they won't be participating in the grade 3 section.

Last week we started our Mystery reading unit.  Student's have started reading their mysteries and are using book club time to discuss what they have been reading, thinking about clues and suspects.  Student's have been very engaged in this unit!

In grade 3 math we are continuing to review previously learned outcomes and are doing some assessments.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to email me alcoulson@edu.pe.ca

February 13-17

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone had a good weekend.  It's hard to believe that this is our last week of school before our winter break!

Since we did not have school on Friday, we will be having pink shirt day tomorrow, February 13th.

Sledding - Students will be sledding during their gym class on Monday, February 13th.  A notice about sledding was sent home last week.  The blue form stating if your child will wear a helmet must be returned to school first thing Monday morning, or they will not be able to participate in sledding.  Also, if you signed that you want your child to wear a helmet for sledding, please send a helmet to school with them on Monday, we do not have any helmets at school.  If students are bringing a sled to school, the sled will need to be dropped off and picked up as they are not allowed on the bus.

Valentine's Day - On Tuesday, February 14th we will be exchanging Valentine's if students would like to bring them in.

Winter Wellness Day - Friday, February 17th is Winter Wellness day.  We will be having a pancake breakfast, and participating in an outdoor UFit class.  There may be some other outdoor acitivites so please make sure your child is dressed appropriately.  Extra mittens/gloves and socks would be great to have in their bags.

In reading, we are continuing to discuss text features, main ideas and supporting details, and telling things that we have learned from the books we read.

In writing we are working on publishing our non-fiction writing.  Last week students used Chromeboooks to find a picture to add to their writing, and they typed up an About the Author page.  This week we will add glossary and cover to our books.  Students have worked so hard on their books, and have requested that we keep them in class for a while to read during quiet reading times.

In grade 3 math we continue to work on multiplication.  Last week we learned how to draw arrays, and equal groups.  We also practiced writing repeated addition and multiplication sentences for arrays and equal groups.  We will continue to work on multiplication this week.

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone had a good weekend.  The grade 3s will be needing some egg cartons for math soon.   If you have any empty egg cartons that you send in it would be greatly appreciated!

Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather. Unless it is raining, or the temperature is too cold, we go outside twice a day for recess.

In reading, students are gaining a good understanding of different text features (headings, table of contents, captions, diagrams, labels, maps, photographs, bold type, glossaries) and how they help us as a reader.  We are continuing to work on the main idea (both grades), and supporting details (grade3).

In writing students are continuing to work on their non-fiction books. This week, we will continue to focus on teaching our audience by adding comparisons, description (size, shape, color, 5 senses), give examples, use big and bold pop out words, and adding text features ( captions, pictures, diagrams/labels, glossary, etc.)

In grade 3 math we are continuing to work on 3 digit addition and subtraction, as well as rounding and estimating.  We are also continuing to work on some story problems.

Kindness week - This year, each grade has been given a month in which to focus on kindness.  Grade 2's month was January, and Grade 3's month is February.  The grade 2 classes each chose a week to have kindness week.  Since we are a split class, we decided to make our kindness week from January 30-February 3. During this week students are encouraged to bring in 1-2 non-perishable food items to donate to the Charlottetown Community Fridge.

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone had a good weekend.  It was nice to finally have some snow to get out to play in rather than being stuck inside because of rain!

Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather.  There were a number of students last week without snowpants, hats, and mittens.

In writing students worked hard last week writing chapters for their non-fiction books. This week, we will be focusing on teaching their audience by adding comparisons, description (size, shape, color, 5 senses), give examples, use big and bold pop out words, and adding text features ( captions, pictures, diagrams/labels, glossary, etc.)

In grade 3 math we are continuing to work on 3 digit addition and subtraction, as well as rounding and estimating.  We have worked on some story problems, and will continue to work on those.

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone stayed safe over the weekend.

This week in reading we are continuing to discuss text features and how they help us as readers.  We are also working on picking out the main idea and supporting details.  Grade 2's are focused on picking out the main idea of a piece of writing, or section of their book.  Grade 3's are doing the same, but they are also working on finding some supporting details.

In writing last week we picked our topics that we are an expert on and started writing all of the things that we know about our topic.  We also created a table of contents for our books.  This week we will begin writing the chapters for our books.

In grade 3 math we are continuing to work on 3 digit addition and subtraction, as well as rounding and estimating.  This week we will practice some subtraction using a number line.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to email me alcoulson@edu.pe.ca

Last week we started working on our non-fiction reading and writing unit.  We read a number of non-fiction books and discussed different text features and how they can help us as readers.  We also discussed topics that we are experts in to get ready to start our non-fiction writing this week.

In grade 3 math our focus for this month is 3 digit addition and subtraction.  We will also continue working on some rounding and estimating.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to email me alcoulson@edu.pe.ca

I hope you all had a great weekend!  We have a short week this week with no school on Thursday or Friday due to the PEITF convention for teachers.

We have exciting things happening in 2/3Y this week.  On Monday we will be starting a From Egg to Chick program that is put on by Agriculture in the Classroom. Our eggs will be arriving on Monday, and are expected to hatch on November 21st.   A few classes in our school did this program in the spring and they really enjoyed it.  We will be learning about the life cycle of living things, as well as where our food comes from.  Curriculum connections for Math, Science, Health, and Technology will be integrated into our Egg to Chick activities.  I will be adding a slideshow to this Google Site so that you can follow along to see how our Egg to Chick program is going.   If you do not want your child's picture to be included in the online slideshow, please let me know as soon as possible.

Poinsettia Fundraiser - On Friday students took home an information letter and order form for our Poinsettia fundraiser.  We are raising money for new playground equipment.  Orders and money are due on November 18th.

Hi Everyone,

We had another great week in 2/3Y!  Everyone enjoyed our field trip on Friday.  We went to Skyeview farm to learn about and pick potatoes, and Jewel Dale farm to learn about dairy cows and where our milk comes from. Most students said that their favourite part was digging potatoes!

We will be getting onto Chromebooks this week.  Students will have a chance to practice logging onto the Chromebooks, and will spend some time on IXL.  Grade 3 students will also practice getting onto Xtramath.

A new homework sheet will be put into homework binders on Wednesday.  We are still doing reading and math homework for this coming week.  Word work homework will start the following Wednesday, September 28th.  I am hoping to finish our 103 spelling words on Tuesday and will include this wordlist in each student's homework binder.  The highlighted words are the words that your child needs to practice.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to email me alcoulson@edu.pe.ca

Spetember 9 - Notes from the office

Meet the Staff Night

Meet the Staff Night will be held on Tuesday, September 13. We will do two sessions. The first one is from 6:00-6:20; the second one is from 6:30-6:50. Parents/Guardians will go direclty to their child's class for information on routines and curriculum. All the doors will be open. You are welcome to enter through any door. This is a great opportunity for our school community to come together-a time for teachers to meet parents, parents to meet staff, parents to learn about your child's program, and for parents to see your child's classroom.

School Start Time

We are asking parents to please ensure your child arrives to school by 8:15 a.m. each day. O’Canada and announcements will happen at 8:20 a.m. and first class starts at 8:25 a.m.  Every minute of class time is precious. When the bell rings, we're off and running. If a student is late, he/she will easily have missed the introduction to the lesson, interrupted the class, and then be in need of explanation of what he/she has missed. Please help us ensure that all class time is maximized by having your child at school on time every day.

Parent Drop-off

Just a reminder for parents to not drop off students prior to 8:05 a.m. as supervision starts at 8:05 a.m. The parent drop off zone is only for drop off, not parking. Please do not get out of your vehicle. If you need to get our vehilce or come into the school, please park in the parking lot. When dropping off in the drop-off zone, please pull up to the top of the circle as possible so that you don't block traffic.

Peanut/Tree Nut Restricted School

Several students, registered at our school, have a severe life-threatening allergy (anaphylaxis) to peanuts/tree nuts and peanut/tree nut products.  Exposure to even a minute amount of the food substance could cause anaphylaxis and without immediate emergency medical assistance, loss of consciousness and death. The school has established emergency plans for the students.  A small amount of peanut product such as peanut butter on the hands of a student or teacher who then touches a door knob, computer, water faucet, water fountain or other article and then is touched by a student severely allergic to peanuts could be enough to cause a severe reaction or the death of the student.

The school has an obligation to establish a safe environment for all students.  Therefore, our school is a PEANUT/TREE NUT AND PEANUT/TREE NUT CONTAINING PRODUCT FREE school.  Parents and teachers are asked to avoid including peanuts and peanut products in lunches or snacks to the school.

Our objectives are to establish and maintain, to the extent possible:

These are school practices which reduce the possibility of exposure to substances which cause anaphylaxis. Thank you for your assistance with this important matter.

Food Utensils

If you order food from the provincial school food program, please make sure you send utensils for your child. The Provincial School Food Program does not provide utensils.

Spetember 7-9

Welcome to 2/3Y!

I am so happy to be your child's teacher this year!  I will be updating this blog at the beginning of each week to let you know what is happening in our class.  Please be sure to check back each week for updates!

This week we will be spending time going over school routines and expectations, as well as getting to know each other better.

Forms were sent home today.  Please fill them out and send them back as soon as possible.

Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.  My email is alcoulson@edu.pe.ca, or you can call the school at 902-368-6790.  I usually check my email before school starts in the morning, but may not get a chance to check it again until after school.  If something comes up during the school day that is time sensitive, it may be best to call the school incase I do not get to my email.
