Hello Everyone!
I hope you all had a lovely weekend and were able to enjoy the beautiful weather! We have lots of exciting things happening this week with our field trip and fun day taking place on Thursday and Friday. The students are loving our balloon pop. Only 11 balloons left!
Here is a quick overview of the week ahead...
Homework: Please continue to read nightly on our PM Collection site. Also, it is important to practice strengthening our quick recall of our math facts. Students can do this by using their flashcards or by spending some time on xtra math.
C.A.R.E Kit: We will begin a new unit this week surrounding personal safety as part of our health curriculum. I have sent a letter home in your child's homework bag regarding the unit and the content that will be covered. Please ensure you take the time to read through the information letter regarding this program.
Field Trip: Our field trip to Cineplex with the Grade 1 classes is this Thursday (June 16). We will be going to the movies in the morning and returning to school for a pizza party in the afternoon. Please ensure you still pack some snacks for the morning as we will be eating our snacks prior to leaving for the theatre. We will not be having a snack at the movie. If you haven't sent in the signed permission form, please do so ASAP.
Fun Day: West Royalty is planning to host the school Fun Day on June 17th. As part of the day, students will be provided with lunch (a hot dog, juice, and ice cream). The games and activities for Fun Day are weather dependent and a rain date is scheduled for June 20th. With that being said, the BBQ will only happen on June 17th (rain or shine). If your child does not like the school-provided lunch, please ensure you pack them an alternative lunch option.
Glow: 1A did an AMAZING job in their performance last week. They should be very proud of themselves. I will send along an e-mail with the link from Mrs. Zinck as soon as it is available.
Important Dates
June 16 - Grade 1 Field Trip to Cineplex
June 17 - Fun Day at WRES
June 27 - Last day of school for students at WRES (Note: this is one day earlier than the school calendar to allow for the move to the new wing of the school)
Have a super week!

Hello,
Wow...it is hard to believe we will be entering the month of June this week! We will have lots of exciting events happening in June as we celebrate the success and hard work of our students. Here is a quick look at the week ahead:
Writing: We will continue this week with persuasive and opinion writing.
Reading: Students will continue to take home a nightly reading book for homework. As we are moving into end-of-year assessments, it is important that students continue to practice their reading each night at home.
Math: We will continue to work on adding and subtracting to 20 this wee. Please continue to practice the addition flash cards with your child to help build confidence, accuracy and speed. We will be introducing geometry later this week.
Glow - Musical
1A has been practicing for the upcoming recording of their musical performance "Glow". Mrs. Zinck plans to tape their concert on June 6th. If possible, students are asked to dress in either black or dark clothing. Shirts or tops without logos on them are preferred. Once the recording has been edited and ready for viewing, I'll let you know.
Important Dates
June 16 - Field Trip for Grade 1 to Cineplex (half day). I will be sending home a permission slip and further details regarding the field trip in the near future.
June 17 - Fun Day is scheduled for Friday, June 17th. If your child has any dietary restrictions please let me know so they can be passed on to those organizing the school BBQ.
June 27 - Last day of school for WRE students. Learning reports will be issued to students on this date.

Hello,
Wow...it feels good to be back! It was so nice to be reunited with 1A. Thank you for you patience, your understanding and your support over the last couple of weeks. Here is a little update of the week ahead.
Writing: We will be continuing to work on procedural writing this week which is a form of non-fiction writing. Students will continue to be the experts as they teach their readers through their writing.
Reading: Guided reading will continue when possible. Some books going home for homework this week may be slightly more challenging as I have updated my homework books based on my guided reading/independent reading assessments. With that being said, these books should still be at your child's independent reading level (meaning they should be able to read them with ease through the use of their reading strategies). If you notice your child is having difficulties with their homework book, please let me know.
Math: We will continue with our measurement unit.
Important Dates
May 23rd there will be no school
Have a great week!

Hello!
I can't believe that we are into the last week of April! Time is flying by and I am very pleased with the growth I am seeing from the students in 1A. I look forward to their continued hard work as we approach the final two months of school. Below is a quick look at the week ahead:
Writing: We spent last week writing about ways we can care for our Earth. We also did some planting in the classroom. This was a great way to review procedural writing.
Reading: We've been working lots in the classroom to strengthen our fluency as readers and use the author's punctuation to guide our expression. Many students are starting to take note of when a character is talking and adjust their reading. Please continue to encourage fluency and expression when your child is reading their nightly homework book. Their reading should sound like talking.
Math: We will continue to review addition and subtraction facts to 20 and representing numbers to 100.
Important Dates
April 26 - Spring coupon book orders are due
April 29 - Last day to order the school yearbook
May 6 - Area Association Day - No School for students

Hello Everyone!
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. It is nice to see some of the snow begin to melt! Here is a quick update of our week ahead.
Kindness Week: West Royalty is partaking in a kindness initiative throughout the school year and is partnering with the PEI Community Fridge. Each week classes are partnered together to shine the spotlight on spreading kindness. 1A has been partnered with 4A. This week, we will have a special "guest" (our kindness bear) arrive in 1A with a backpack filled with kindness examples created by 4A. Throughout this week, 1A will return the favour by creating kindness ideas to share with 4A. I can't wait to see what 1A comes up with! Students in 1A are also invited to bring one non-perishable food item (on a completely voluntary basis) to donate to the PE Community Fridge this week.
Writing: We will be continuing to work on our teaching books as we work towards the end of our Non-Fiction unit. I look forward to seeing the finished products as we publish them for others to read.
Math: We will be reviewing all of our addition and subtraction strategies learned thus far. Later in the week, I will be introducing the students to a website called "xtra math". Their login information will be sent home so that they can practice mastering their math facts to 20.
Easter Seals: We are collecting money for Easter Seals this week. If you would like to send in a donation, that would be appreciated. The Easter Seals campaign runs until April 19th, 2022.
Yearbook: If you are interested in purchasing a yearbook, please send your form and money in and we will send it up to the office. The forms were sent home last week.

Hi Everyone,
I hope you had a lovely long weekend. Thank you to those who sent in Valentines Day treats last week. The students had a wonderful time making their Valentine's bags and handing out cards to their peers.
100th Day of School: Can you believe the 100th day of school is near by?!? We will begin to take part in many special activities to celebrate this milestone. As part of the students homework for this week and next, I ask that they bring in their own display/collection of 100 items. For example, you could use 100 stickers, 100 fruit loops, 100 pompoms - students can really use their creativity for this project! I ask that each student have their collection of 100 items brought in in a zip lock bag by Wednesday, March 3 as we will be using them as part of our 100th day celebrations the following week. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Reading: I finished up my assessments in reading and we will return to Guided Reading groups this week. Next week, you may notice a change in the length/complexity of your child's homework book as I will be adjusting their independent readers for homework based on my most recent assessment. These books will still be an independent reading level for your child and they should be able to read them with ease when using their reading strategies to solve unknown words.
Writing: In writing, I will be launching our Non-Fiction Unit where the students will become the "teacher" and write their very own teaching book. They will explore topics that they are experts on and organize their ideas into "chapters". I'm excited to learn from their writing!
Math: In math, we will continue to review addition with answers to 20 and students will be introduced to "Linus the Minus" as we begin subtraction.
Interviews: Please sign up online for your parent-teacher conference. Interviews times are available for the evening of Thursday, March 3rd and during the day on Friday, March 4th. Hello Everyone,
I hope that you all had a wonderful Valentines Day with your loved ones. It was nice to have a little celebration this afternoon. Thank you to everyone who sent in cards. The children were excited to read messages from their friends. Here is a quick look at the week ahead.
Writing: I will be doing a writing check-in tomorrow. The students will be writing independently for 30 mins on a chosen topic. I look forward to sharing these pieces with you during Parent Teacher Conferences.
Reading: I have been reading individually with students and I am pleased to see some progress. They are working hard at using many of their reading strategies when coming to tricky words. Way to go 1A!
Math: we will continue to review doubles along with other strategies for addition with answers to 20. When solving an addition problem, we have been focusing on starting with the bigger or "bossy" number and counting on. For example, for 7+3 --> start with 7 and count on 8, 9, 10. So we know 7+3=10. I

Hello Everyone,
I hope that everyone had a great weekend. I am hearing a lot of outdoor adventures this morning. It is great to have so much snow for the kids to play in.
We had a fabulous transition back to the classroom last week. I am so proud of how well the students adjusted back with our new guidelines in place. Just a reminder to pack an extra medical mask or three layer mask in your child's backpack.
Writing: The students spent last week continuing to write Non-Fiction texts. They spent some time picking an animal and sharing some interesting facts about their chosen animal. This week we will work on completing our animal reports.
Math: The students were introduced to Gus the plus last week as we explored math strategies to help in solving +0,+1 and +2 addition problems. This week, the students will explore strategies for solving +3 and double facts.
Reading: Guided Reading will be put on hold this week as I would like to spend some time reading with each child separately.
Reminders:
Pleasure ensure you are sending your child with hats, mittens and snow pants. If possible, an extra pair of mittens would come in handy as some mittens come back very wet after first recess and do not have enough time to dry before second recess.
A new set of rapid test kits were sent home with every student on Thursday. Please ensure that your child is tested on Monday, Wednesday and Friday before coming to school. Also, refer to our screening questionnaire and if your child has symptoms but has tested negative, please keep them home until they are feeling well.
Valentine's Day is fast approaching. I will be sending home a class list for those students who are interested in bringing in valentines for their classmates. If your child would like to pass out valentines, please be sure to bring enough for all students in the class (18 students). They will have time to hand these out on Monday, February 14.
Please let me me know if your child is going to be absent as attendance is required to be submitted by 10:30am each day. Providing a brief reason for the absence is helpful to ensure that we place the appropriate code to the absence in PowerSchool.
Have a great week!

Thank you so much to everyone who attended parent teacher interviews. I enjoyed the conversations we had about your children and all of the great things they are doing in grade one. I look forward to watching them grow as learners over the next few months. If you have any questions, concerns or thoughts throughout out next term, please do not hesitate to contact me!
Bear Unit: The Grade 1 classes are launching their living things unit and will be studying bears during the month of December!
Watch Me Learn and Grow Home Project- The boys and girls will be taking home a project I’d like them to work on over the next week and a half. Watch Me Learn and Grow will be displayed in our classroom for us all to see how we’ve grown and changed over time from birth to age 6. This will touch on various grade one science and social studies outcomes and the class will have a chance to present their project to their classmates. It is due December 10th but can be taken back to school whenever it is complete. Any photos will be returned with the project after the entire class has had a chance to share with one another.

Hi Everyone!
I hope that you all enjoyed your weekend. It was so nice to see the sun. We have been blessed with a beautiful Fall. I am looking forward to seeing 1A and hearing all about their weekend adventures.
Reading: Guided Reading will be taking place this week. We have been working on reading fluently by making sure that our reading "sounds like talking". If your child is reading a sentence word for word, please encourage them to put their words together so that they almost touch. This is the language that I use in the classroom so it should be familiar to them. We will continue to work on fluency this week in our Guided Reading sessions.
Writing: In writers workshop this week, I will be introducing the students to a new unit of study: Small Moments. This unit allows students to share many "small moments" that have happened in their lives through pictures and words. I look forward to sharing pieces with you once we dive into the unit.
Math: We will continue to work on number sense to 20 this week and will be counting to 100 in different ways (by 2's, 5's, 10,s and forward and backwards from any given number).
Learning Reports: They will be sent home on Tuesday, November 23rd.
Parent Teacher Conferences: These will be held on November 25th (evening) and November 26th (day). Thank you to everyone who signed up for a time. The online booking is now closed. If yo did not sign up, please contact me as soon as possible and I will choose one of the available time slots for you. Ms. Doyle and I look forward to meeting with you all to share your child's progress and next steps.
Reminders:
Tomorrow is day 2
Please pack cutlery if needed. We do not supply cutlery
Please pack a water bottle, as our fountains are currently closed
Have a great week!
Danielle
Hi Parents,
I hope that you all had a wonderful weekend and were able to enjoy the extra hour of sleep. I am so excited to be back with 1A and I cannot wait to see them in the morning. This is going to be a short week with only 3 days of school !
Reading- Now that Ms. Lydia has completed her reading check-ins, Guided Reading will resume. Guided Reading allows me to focus on several children at a time in a small group setting, who all have individual skills they need to develop. It's exciting to see when they take what I teach them, and apply it in their own reading. Please continue to refer to the reading strategy ring when your child encounters an unfamiliar word. This will help build their confidence in decoding unfamiliar words more independently.
Math- We will be continuing to work on numbers to 20 this week in Math. When at home, practicing to count by 2's to 20, and 10's to 100 would be a great support to our unit.
No school- Thursday, Nov. 11- Remembrance Day
Friday, Nov. 12 & Monday, Nov. 15 - Teacher's Convention
Report cards go home Nov. 23
Have a great week!
Danielle
Hello 1A Families!
I hope you all had a lovely weekend. It was a wet and windy Halloween night but I am sure many students still made the best of it! Please read below for important information as we head into the busy month of November.
Homework
Students will receive 4 new books this week and will take home one book to read each night. I am seeing lots of students calling on their reading strategies as they decode tricky words in class. Thank you for the support with your child's nightly reading. Please be sure to leave any notes in the reading log of how your child is doing with their nightly reading (ex: tricky words, book difficulty, comprehension, etc.).
We will add 5 new sight words to our word ring this week: this from at have be. Please have your child practice reading their word ring each night. The more practice they have with these words will allow for better application as we continue to expand our reading and writing.
For math, continue with counting forwards to 20.
School Pictures
School pictures will take place on Tuesday, November 2 for Grade 1.

I also ask that you leave a note on the reading log of how your child did with their reading book each night.
I will continue to work with small groups for guided reading. After the guided reading session, your child will take home that book as their homework book to read for the night. Guided reading books may be a bit more challenging for students than their normal independent reading books but students are encouraged to use their reading strategy ring to help them.

Book Fair
The book fair is taking place this week (October 25-29). 1A will visit the book fair to view on Wednesday (Day 3) and will return to the book fair on Friday (Day 5) to buy books. Happy Monday Everyone!
1A became a classroom of 18 this week as we welcomed a new student, Rhyley. The students of 1A were very welcoming to Rhyley and by our first recess, she had lots of requests to play with new peers. We have a caring group in 1A who made Rhyley feel welcomed and comfortable in her new class - they should be very proud. A few important updates below:
Homework
Students will continue to bring home one new book each evening for homework. Please encourage your child to use one-to-one matching while reading (i.e. your child points to each word as he/she reads). It is beneficial to have your child read their book twice each night, if possible, as this helps develop smooth and fluent reading.
New sight words for this week: for on he are was. Please have your child review their word ring each night.
Math - Continue to practice counting forward to 20. If students are up for the challenge, they can also practice counting backwards from 20 to 0.
Note: Your child's orange duotang and their reading book should be returned to school every day.
Battery Blitz
This Friday students will participate in an "Earth Rangers" presentation about the importance of recycling batteries. Throughout the next few weeks, families are asked to send in used batteries. These batteries must be bagged/zipped in clear plastic bags. Loose batteries cannot be accepted. Last year our school came in second place for the blitz and earned a prize that will help add some fun to our playground areas.

Hello 1A Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I can see a difference in the students over the last two weeks as they are settling into the routines of 1A. Given that students are now familiar with expectations during class time, I will be pulling small groups for guided reading during independent reading time. We will be continuing with some fall activities in the classroom and will introduce Halloween and Healthy Eating/Physical Activity units as we end the month of October. In writing, students are focusing on the learning goals of using correct spacing between words and telling a story using both pictures and words. In math, we are continuing to focus on number sense from 0-20 and will introduce patterns and connections amongst numbers that will be useful for students as we progress to 100. I look forward to another wonderful week of learning and growth in 1A. Please read below for a few important updates:
Homework
Thank you for your support during our first week of homework. Students seemed eager to discuss their reading from home and I saw strength in their sight word spelling by the end of the week. Homework will follow the same format this week. We have introduced 5 new sight words: in it that you is
Please ensure that your child's homework bag and orange duotang are returned to school each day with their reading book and word ring as we use these in class each day to support our writing and reading.
Note from Office
Administration is asking that students please not bring Pokemon cards or any toys from home. As you know, these items are often passed around and we are trying our best to avoid this. Please check that your child doesn't have these items in backpacks or pockets when leaving for school each morning.
Toonie for Terry Fox
Students will have an opportunity to participate in the Terry Fox run this week during their Phys. Ed. classes. Students are encouraged to bring in a toonie for Terry Fox.
Library Books
Book Exchange takes place on Day 5 of the cycle which is tomorrow (Wednesday October 13). Students were reminded today to please have their library books returned tomorrow morning as they will not be able to check out a new book until their old library book is returned.
Important Dates
October 13 - Library books need to be returned
October 14 - Bus Evacuation Drill
October 25-29 - Book Fair
November 2 - School Pictures for Grade 1
As always, please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Hello Everyone,
It is hard to believe we are already into October! I had a great week getting to know the students of 1A and I look forward to seeing them grow as learners in our classroom. We will be working on some thanksgiving activities connected to a variety of our curriculum outcomes this week, which I think the students will really enjoy. A few important reminders for the week ahead:
Homework
We will be starting homework this week in Grade 1. We will go over the homework expectations in class with the students but please also check their homework bag as there is a notice that I have included that explains expectations/routine for nightly homework (purple sheet). Homework bags and the orange homework duotang that will be sent home this week are to be returned with your child each day.
Brown Bags
As part of building our class community, we will have students fill up an "All About Me" bag. Students are to bring in three things from home that tell the class about them. These items need to be small enough to fit into a brown bag. For example, if a student really enjoyed a sport they might bring in a ribbon or medal from that sport. We decorated the brown bags in class on Monday and they were sent home with students in their homework bag to fill over the week. Please return the brown bag once your child has filled it with their three items. As students return their bags, they will have an opportunity to show the class what they brought.
Clothing
As the weather is turning colder, please ensure your child has a sweater or jacket at school with them for recess.
If you have not already, please send in an extra set of clothes in a bag with your child's name on it. These will be kept in the back of the classroom incase of an accident, spills, getting wet at recess, etc.
Important Dates
October 8 - Professional Learning Day - No school
October 11 - Thanksgiving Monday - No school
I look forward to a great week in 1A and as always, please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Take care,
Lydia Doyle

Dear Parents,
Welcome back! Thank-you so much for your patience and understanding as we moved to home learning last week. We worked together to support your children as they transitioned to learning at home. I appreciate all you have done since the beginning of our evolving school year! We will continue to work together as we transition back to learning at school, with a new daily schedule in place and cohorting of classes. West Royalty will be implementing many of the same policies and regulations that were in place for last year’s school year. We have stayed on the same cycle as all other Island schools, even with our week of remote learning. Here is your child’s new schedule:
Please note:
For those students who have been directed by CPHO to self-isolate, optional learning packages are available for your child which can be picked up at school. Enclosed in the package you will find simple Language Arts, Math, and Science activities. If you would like to pick one up for your child, please let me know and I will have it ready for you. You can let me know through Dojo.
Please send in a set of headphones with your child’s name on them in a ziplock bag. These headphones will be used during our technology time with our chrome books. The headphones are necessary to ensure your children can hear what they are learning or reading about on their chrome books during our technology time. Thanks so much!
If you order any of our hot lunches, please remember to send in a spoon or fork for your child to eat with. The lunch program does not provide eating utensils any longer.
Please ensure your child has 2 pairs of shoes for school – one for outdoors and one for indoors/Phys. Ed classes. Please practice shoe tying at home if your child has laces in their sneakers.
Thank you,
Danielle
September 13th,
Hi Everyone,
This was not the way I anticipated starting our second week of school. I hope that you tried to enjoy the weekend and that 1A's doors reopen soon.
I have posted a little video on ClassDojo. Please at some point share this with your child. I wish I could see their sweet faces but at least they can see mine.
You will be receiving a phone call today or tomorrow from Mrs. Blakley. She is an EA in our room and has generously offered to call everyone to give them their child's login usernames and passwords. Please write it down and store it in a safe place. You will need this information Wednesday. The grade one team will be working hard over the next two days to get home learning up and running. Remember....we are in this together. I am here to support you and your child through this process.
I will be in touch Wednesday morning.
Take care and stay well!
Danielle

Hi Everyone,
Welcome to 1A! I am so excited to be your child's grade one teacher! We are going to have a year filled with lots of fun and learning. I look forward to working with you all during the 2021/2022 school year.
Please be on the lookout for the usual package of student information forms that need to be signed and returned as soon as possible. They will be in a black communication bag going home Tuesday or Wednesday. This bag will be your child's homework bag for the year. It will be sent home each evening. Please remember to pack it nightly so that it makes its way back to me daily.
I am asking that you sign up for Class Dojo. I will be sending home the sign up instructions on Tuesday. Please sign up as soon as possible.
Have a great week,
Danielle
