How is it the end of September already?! We've had a great first month of school!
Here's a look at our week ahead:
Fundations - We will be continuing our work on Unit 1. Concepts: digraphs, consonant blends, digraph blends, spelling of the /k/ sound -c, -k, -ck, closed syllables. I have included a photo summary below for explanation. These are a review of grade one concepts.
Ex. When deciding whether to use c or k when spelling a word: If the /k/ sound is followed by a i or an e, use k.
ex. kit, kept
If the /k/ sound is followed by a, o or u, it is spelled with a c.
ex. cast, cop, cup
Use -ck when the /k/ sound is following a short vowel sound in a one syllable word.
ex. pack, deck, stick, sock, truck
Math - We are working with our hundreds charts - counting and noticing patterns in the chart. Ex. counting by 10s (moving up a column - minus 10 for each row) and down the column (add 10 for each row), and before and after numbers. We have been representing numbers with ten frames, tallies and base 10 blocks.
Homework - We are practicing our homework routine together in class this week and will begin sending it home next week. I will send along more information about homework soon.
Notes:
Tomorrow: Orange shirt day - wear an orange shirt (or any orange clothing) to show support of the message “Every Child Matters”, meaning every single person is important, valued, and deserves to be treated with fairness and kindness.
Wed. Sept. 30 - No classes in observation of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
October 8th - School photos for grade 2 English

Sept. 14 - 18
Welcome to our first full week of school! We are certainly off to a great start in 2C. Our students are a sweet, kind group and they are learning our class routines and expectations quickly. They are eager to share stories and have been very engaged in the activities we have done so far!
Meet the Staff - Meet the Staff will be held on Wed. Sept. 16. The schedule for each grade level:
6:00-6:15 – Kindergarten
6:20-6:35 – Gr. 1
6:40-6:55 – Gr. 2
I am looking forward to connecting with you all on Wednesday. I will also post the notes from the evening on my Google site and email them out to families after Wednesday's session.
Notes
A few notes as we begin the year:
Reminder: Glen Stewart is a seafood free and peanut/nut free school due to a number of staff and students allergies. We ask that families not send Wow Butter or other similar substitutes, as it is difficult to distinguish these from nut butters and this can cause considerable anxiety around those who have life-threatening nut allergies.
Please send in a change of clothes for you child to keep in their backpack. These come in very handy if there are spills or slips into water or mud at recess time. We have had a number of students dig into their extra clothes bag already this year.
Please send utensils for lunches as the vendors do not provide these with the ordered meals.
