Hi Families!

It is hard to believe we are entering the last 4 days of the school year! It is always an emotional time of the year as we say ‘see you later’ to our classroom family, mixed with the excitement of summer days ahead. We are having lots of fun with our balloon countdown activities!

We will start cleaning out our desks on Tuesday, so we don’t leave everything to the last day. Please keep an eye out for work and supplies going home, and clean out your child’s homework bag so more can go home throughout the week. If you are able, it would be helpful to send in an empty grocery bag. Thank you!

The students found out on Friday that tomorrow, Monday, June 23rd, is extra time outside day. We are keeping the activities as a surprise for the kids, and popping a virtual balloon each day to find out the next day’s activity. I have included this last week’s activities at the bottom of this update, so you have a heads up, but we would appreciate it if you left it as a surprise for the kids and did not tell them in advance. Fundations - We will continue reviewing skills we have learned this year. We will reinforce that these skills are being applied in their writing. Math - We will be reviewing skills we’ve learned this year including addition and subtraction and counting skills. We’ll also be working on measurement, patterning, and exploring various 2D and 3D shapes.

Hi Families!

We had a wonderful week in grade one! The children had an amazing time on their trip to Camp Triumph. I have posted some photos of our class trip on our class website.

The students can bring something from home they would like to share with the class. This Wednesday June 18th is Field Day at Glen Stewart School. The students will be participating in a variety of games and activities around the school. Please make sure that your child comes in comfortable clothing and footwear.

Hi Families!

There was a lot of excitement at the end of last week when we released our butterflies! The kids were sad to see them go, but they felt better once we explained that they would rather be in their natural habitat now. When we got outside, the butterflies started flying around excitedly in the net, and the kids noticed how excited the butterflies were to feel the wind and sun. It was a special time. Reading Homework: I will continue to send books home for your child to read. I removed the reading log last week as I am okay with you not recording what your child has read.

Fundations - We are working in Unit 12 for the next three weeks! We’re learning to read and write multisyllabic words, and then we will be adding -s, -ed, and -ing suffixes to multisyllabic words. We are learning to make words that have two closed syllables (ie: consist) and words that have one closed syllable and one v-e syllable (ie: inspire)

We’re learning that if a word has 2 vowels that are separated by consonants, we need to divide the word into syllables. We are learning how to identify where to divide these words.

Show and Tell- we are continuing with Show and Tell for our class. Monday is Beckett, Tuesday is Quinn, Wednesday is Pak-Hei, Thursday is Kayla and Friday is William. When Emma returns she can take her Show and Tell with her and share that day.

June 2nd - 6th

Hi Families!

It was another fun week in grade one! We had a wonderful trip to Cotton Park. The weather was beautiful, we saw lots of signs of spring and had fun together! We also had a presentation on Raven's Riddles.

Most of our caterpillars have transformed from larva (caterpillars) into pupas! They are each in a chrysalis and we’ve moved them into their butterfly habitat. We can’t wait to see them emerge as butterflies! We may have some butterflies when we arrive on Monday!

Tomorrow, I will send home a permission form for our end of year field trip to Camp Triumph. If you could sign and return the permission slip as soon as possible, I would appreciate it. You can send in $17 cash for the cost of the field trip, or pay online through the hot lunch platform. If you are unable to pay the fee, please reach out to me privately. I would not want anyone to miss out on the field trip for this reason.

We’ll be doing a 2 week countdown to the last day of school, stay tuned for more information about our fun days ahead!

Your Visit Contributes to Charity - As a registered charity, the fee from your field trip visit helps to contribute to our mission by helping us provide summer programs to a special population of children for free. Our campers all have a sibling or parent with an illness or disability. So you would not only get a fun day in the “Camp Bubble”, but would be helping to make a difference for so many other children. Additionally, if you know any children at your school who could benefit from our programs, please let their parents know.

Activities: Classes will participate in a variety of fun activities! There will be 10+ staff at Camp Triumph to support students in safely navigating the various activities. There will be a rock climbing wall that students will have the option to try, a Low Element Ninja course (zigzag walk, up and over structure, web, etc.), soft foam archery, and plastic axe throwing. The afternoon will be a “Splash Zone” with activities that include: competitive water games (like sponge toss), several relays, a foam machine, and two water slides (no pool or swimming required).

Hi 1J Families!

It was a great week in grade one! We had a wonderful visit from the Stratford RCMP to teach us all about ways to keep safe. They also brought their RCMP cars to show us and they even let us sit inside of them!

Some of our caterpillars have begun to take their J shape. That means that soon they will transition to their pupal stage (chrysalis)! The children were very excited this morning when they came in and noticed the change!

Last week I sent home a permission form for our field trip to Robert Cotton Park on Wednesday. If you have not signed the permission slip yet please return as soon as possible. The trip is scheduled for Wednesday May 28th. That trip date is weather dependent and if it is raining we will plan to go another day of the week. We will connect with you and let you know if the field trip date has changed.

Hi Families!

It was an exciting week in grade one! On Wednesday we received our painted lady caterpillars. Over the coming weeks we will watch as they grow and change. We will watch them transition from the larval stage (caterpillar) to the pupal stage (chrysalis). Then we will see them emerge as butterflies. This is an exciting project for the students and ties in well with our science curriculum.

Hi Families!

With warmer days ahead (hopefully), some students have started to bring sunscreen to school. We ask that sunscreen be applied at home in the morning, if possible, and then students can re-apply before lunchtime recess if needed. Please do not send spray sunscreen (the fumes are strong and it makes the floor slippery). Also, just a reminder that teachers cannot apply sunscreen, so the students should be able to do so on their own if they are bringing it to school. Thanks for your cooperation! Please make sure your child has the appropriate outdoor clothing. It may be useful to have extra clothing in your child’s backpack as they sometimes can get muddy at recess.

Reading homework - Students will have 4-6 books for the week. I am encouraging them to read for 15-20 minutes each night when possible. As their books start to get longer, it may mean that they have to read a book over two nights. At this time in the year, I’m starting to give them more freedom of choice for their homework books. As they become stronger readers, I want them to have the opportunity to choose books that they are interested in and are excited to read. This may mean that they take books home that are too challenging for them to read independently. You can support them as needed, and if you’re finding that they’re unable to read a lot of the books, please send me an e-mail and let me know. I will help them to choose books more suitable for them. This is a good chance for them to do some exploration and have more freedom in choosing what they would like to read. I will send home any books that I read with them during guided reading. Thanks for your support!

We enjoyed meeting Easter Seals Ambassador, Remi Dean, last Wednesday. The kids represented GSP very well by showing great respect to Remi, her family, and the rest of the representatives on tour during our assembly.

Also, we did some activities and shared books to recognize Earth Day last week. The kids know how to take good care of our environment!

Hi Families!

I hope everyone enjoyed their extra long weekend! This week will be a fun week with our Easter Seals visit happening on Wednesday. Students really enjoyed their ice cream on Thursday - thanks to everyone who was able to donate.

We have entered that time of year when we could have every season of weather in one day! Fingers crossed for some warm and sunny days soon! In the meantime, splash pants and extra socks are always appreciated as our playground tends to be pretty muddy. Hats and mittens may still be a good idea for chillier morning recesses as well.

Reading homework - It’s that time of year when teachers need to do their book inventory for their classrooms. Could you please do me a favour and look around your home for any GSP books: these books could be levelled books (example: PM+) or decodable books (example: syllasense, flyleaf, daffodil press). All of these books should have a label on them. Please send them back to school when/if you find any. Since I need to organize and count all these books, your child will have paper copied decodable books and shared reading books from the library this week. Thank you for your support in this!

Easter Seals- Our Easter Seals visit will happen on April 23rd at 8:40 am in the gym. On Thursday, April 17, we will be having our ice cream sale, which is our last fundraiser to raise money for the Easter Seals. Thank you to everyone who sent in donations already.

Hi Families!

We had a wonderful week together! We have been searching for signs of spring. Thank you for continuing to send students with warm outdoor clothing. The cold weather keeps coming back and the snow just keeps falling!

We had our photos taken on Wednesday. You should have received a green slip of paper in your student’s homework bag from Everest Solutions. This will provide access to your student’s school picture.

This week we will be having French week at Glen Stewart. The students will be listening to a French song each day and learning some French words. On Wednesday the home and school will be providing croissants for the students. On Thursday we will get to see a concert by Michael Pendergast which will be so much fun! Also, a reminder that there is no school on Friday April 11 due to the PD Day.

I will be sending some of our past Fundations Booklets home. We generally don’t finish them in class but they can be good practice for the units we have completed.

Writing - We will finish up our Non-Fiction books and begin our Persuasive writing unit. This week we will be discussing the difference between facts and opinions. We will begin writing about our opinions on different topics.

Easter Seals- Our Easter Seals visit will happen on April 23rd at 8:40 am in the gym. On Friday we had our hat day fundraiser and on Thursday April 17 we will be having our ice cream sale to raise money for the Easter Seals. Thank you to everyone who sent in donations already!

Hi Families!

Last week we had our last Yoga session. Thanks to the Town of Stratford for offering these classes to our grade one students these past few months. The kids really enjoyed these classes and learned valuable skills. These Yoga sessions aligned well with our Health Curriculum on Wellness Choices and Life Learning Choices. A few sessions, also, aligned well with our Science Curriculum on the 5 Senses. We also enjoyed a visit to Stratford Elementary to visit with our grade 3 book buddies.

Thanks for ensuring your child was appropriately dressed last week for the Winter weather that just won’t go away! Let’s hope for warmer days ahead.

Fundations - This week we will be working through week two of Unit 9 of Fundations. In Unit 9, students will learn the concept of a closed syllable. A closed syllable ends in a consonant and only has one vowel. The vowel in a closed syllable is short. It is important for students to recognize a closed syllable because when the vowel is closed in at the end of a word, the vowel sound is short, as in the word "math" or "cat." The recognition of this word structure will be key as students continue with the program as it will support them in segmenting multisyllabic words.

Reading homework - Your child will have 4 independent reading books this week, as well as 2 shared reading books. The shared reading books are books from our classroom library that your child selects themselves to enjoy at home. Please remember to send all homework books back at the end of each week.

Fundations - This week we will be working in Unit 9. We will learn the term closed syllables. A closed-syllable word has only one vowel, and the vowel is ‘closed in’; it is immediately followed by a consonant(s) or a digraph. Example: bat, bath, rush, sip. In closed-syllable words, the vowel says its’ short vowel sound. We mark closed syllable words by underlining the word, writing ‘c’ under it, and marking the short vowel sound with the short vowel symbol . We will also learn vowel team sounds to help us decode/read words with vowel teams. Example: each, sweet, say, wait, boat.

Reading homework - Your child will have 4 independent reading books this week, as well as 1 shared reading. The shared reading book is a book from our classroom library that your child selects themselves to enjoy at home. Please remember to send all homework books back at the end of each week.

Writing - We will continue to explore non-fiction writing. We will complete our non-fiction books on an animal of each student's choice. Next, the kids will be choosing their own topics to "teach" about in their writing. To be an 'expert' on a topic, your child should know 5 facts they can add to their writing! Our topics won't be complicated - they can write to teach us about their best friend or things to do at recess time. They can write to teach about a person they know, a sport, an activity, an animal, etc.

Hi 1J Families!

We had lots of fun last week with our 100th day celebrations. It was nice for the kids to connect with kids from other classes during our hallway stations. We have accomplished a lot in 100 days and have so much to celebrate and be proud of!

Thanks to everyone for participating in Pink Shirt Day. The kids are very aware of what kindness looks and sounds like. We enjoyed a read-aloud and wrote about how we can show kindness every day.

Hi Families!

I hope you had a great weekend! We had a busy and fun week in 1J last week. We enjoyed getting outside and doing some orienteering and play time for our Winter Wellness day! We also enjoyed the various stations: curling, yoga, speed skating, ribbons, and snowboarding!

On Tuesday, February 25th the grade one classes will be celebrating the 100th day of school! We have lots of fun activities planned including hallway stations with all the grade one English classes. We’re looking forward to exploring 100 in many ways on Tuesday. Students are welcome to wear their PJs on this day or dress like you are 100 years old! Wednesday, February 26th will also be Pink Shirt Day and students are encouraged to wear pink to spread kindness on this day!

Fundations - This week we will be completing our check-in for Unit 7 on Tuesday and starting Unit 8 on Wednesday. Unit 8 focuses on consonant blends. We learn to identify the vowel, and look for a consonant blends before or after the vowel. A consonant blend is when two or more consonants go together quickly, but each give their own sound (for example: stop, trick).

Reading homework - Your child will have 4 independent reading books this week, as well as 1-2 shared reading books. Please remember to send all homework books back at the end of each week. Thank you for your continued support with reading homework. The independent reading books that I send home usually include a few books that I have read with your child. King Sam is the book that goes along with our Unit 7 Fundations. Make sure your child reads it with you.

Math- Last week we learned about numbers that go together to “Make 10” (1+9, 2+8, 3+7, etc.). We’ll continue to work on addition strategies and more practice with “Make 10” to help with quick recall of these math facts.

Writing- We will be finishing up our non-fiction books about the seasons. We’ll be writing about the fall, editing our work, and adding details to our illustrations.

Hi Families!

I hope you had a wonderful extra long weekend! Due to the cancellation of school on Friday we will be having our Valentine’s Day celebration on Tuesday February 18. We will be exchanging Valentine’s cards and participating in some fun activities!

On Friday February 21, we will be having Winter Wellness Day at school. We will be doing sledding, outdoor orienteering and some fun indoor activities as well. Please make sure your child comes with snow pants and warm winter clothing on Friday. It would also be a good idea to pack extra mittens and socks as we will be spending extra time outside.

Hi Families!

We had another great week of learning last week! We have lots of excitement coming up with Valentine's Day and the 100th day of school!

Tomorrow, we will have a presentation by the PEI School Milk Program. The 25 minute session will highlight the importance of healthy eating habits and nutrition according to Canada's Food Guide. This content will support our curriculum outcomes for health.

Valentine’s Day is coming up on Friday. We will be exchanging valentines and participating in some fun activities! If you would like to send your child in with Valentine’s cards please ensure they have one for each student in the class so that everyone is included! We will have a small class party so if you would like to send in a treat, please let me know. We have a child with a milk allergy so I always like to be prepared so that she feels included in all of our snacks. I do have a few bags of chips left from Christmas so we'll have those to share with the class.

Hi Families!

We had lots of fun last week with our literacy week activities! We really enjoyed our field trip to the Stratford Public Library. The library gave us applications for student library cards. I will be sending them home tomorrow. If you would like your child to have a library card, you can return them to the school in your child’s homework bag. Miss Amy (our school librarian) has offered to pass them into the library!

I will be sending home pictures of all of the students in our class. You can use this picture for all of the names of the students in our class for Valentine’s Day. Hi 1J Families!

We had a cold week last week with some indoor recesses. Let’s hope for warmer weather this week so we can get outside to play every day! Thank you for ensuring that your child has proper outdoor attire each day. A reminder to put your child’s name on all of their items if possible. We’ve had a lot of hats and mitts lately that nobody wants to claim, and I’m unsure who they belong to if they aren’t marked. Thanks!

We have an exciting week ahead with our Glen Stewart Literacy Week!

Here is the information on what is happening each day at our school:

Monday: Bookmark Contest (done at school).

Tuesday: PJ Day! Students can wear their pajamas to school if they wish. Also, our class will be walking to the Stratford Library on this day for a read aloud and activity. I will send the permission forms home tomorrow, please sign and return for Tuesday.

Wednesday: Dress up as your favourite book character. I will have some character headbands printed off for those who would prefer to make one of those instead of wearing a costume.

Thursday/Friday: Read aloud videos and literacy activities throughout the school.

Hi Families!

We are busy bees in Grade 1 this month! We had a wonderful week finishing up our How-To writing unit. Every student should be able to tell you how to make a hot chocolate with marshmallows! We will begin to explore the fiction genre through reading “The Mitten”. Students are very excited about our addition unit and I look forward to diving into addition strategies this week. January is a big month! The forecast this week is looking very chilly. It may be a good idea to send an extra pair of mittens or gloves just in case they become wet during the first recess!

Hi Families!

We had a great first week back at school! The students did a great job of remembering their routines and getting settled in for a new month of learning. We reviewed sight words, reading and writing strategies and counting skills. We continued working on Unit 6 of our Fundations unit and will continue this for the next two weeks.

This week, the grade one students will start weekly yoga sessions being offered through the Town of Stratford. We are very lucky to be offered this opportunity! We will participate in a 30 minute yoga session once a week for 8 weeks.

Due to the snow and slush outside a lot of students were coming in with wet feet this week. If you could send a change of socks in your child’s bag that would be great! Also, snow pants are very important to keep the kids dry and comfortable at recess.

Virtual Workshop - We will be participating in a virtual workshop with the Museum of Nature in Ottawa. A science interpreter will be teaching us about tide pools and the creatures that live in them. We’ll learn about how these creatures adapt to living in tidal pools. HD cameras and microscopes will help us get an up close look at creatures such as sea cucumbers, urchins, anemones, sea stars, clams and crabs! We will learn about how they eat, move, and survive to develop an appreciation for tidal pool areas where we live!

Hi 1J Families!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and enjoyed the holiday season! Happy New Year and welcome back to my grade one friends! I am excited to see you and hear about your break.

January is a busy month in grade one with lots of new learning! The first week will be spent reviewing routines and expectations in the classroom. We will also review our sight words, reading and writing strategies, and counting skills. We will be working on Fundations Unit 6 and will discuss our goals as a class and as individuals for 2025. I will be posting more information about our January Learning Goals next week after we’ve had a chance to settle back into things.

Reminders:

Please remember to send appropriate outdoor clothing each day. We go outside twice a day as long as it isn’t colder than -20. Extra mittens and socks are never a bad idea this time of year!
Please send a fork or spoon with your child if they need it for their lunch. Just a reminder that these are not provided for the hot lunch programs. Also, your child should have a water bottle each day at school. Thank you!
The homework bag should travel back and forth between home and school each day. Also, be sure to check inside each night in case there are notices that went home. Thanks for your cooperation with this!

Hi 1J Families!

It was another busy and wonderful week in grade one. The children did an amazing job at both their Christmas concerts. I loved hearing and watching them perform on stage!

This will be our last week of school in the 2025 school year! It will be another busy week in grade one. We have lots of fun activities planned to celebrate the upcoming holidays. We sent home a paper schedule of our week together. The activities for each day are posted below. We will be kicking off our week with a show and tell day tomorrow! The students can bring one item they would like to share with the class.

There will be no homework books sent home this week. Please send back any books you have at home.

December 9th - 13th

Hi Families!

Wow! It was an absolutely incredible week in grade one. When we arrived on Monday morning, many of the eggs had pipped. Our eggs began hatching on Monday and by Wednesday we had a classroom filled with baby chicks! The children had the opportunity to watch the chicks pecking through the eggs and then hatching inside the incubator. When the chicks were dry and fluffy we moved them to their brooder pen inside the classroom. The children enjoyed naming them, observing their activity, holding the chicks, feeding them and even reading to them! We learned so much about chickens and their life cycle through this hands-on science curriculum project provided by Agriculture in the Classroom PEI. We were sad to see them go back to the farm but I think the class enjoyed the experience!

This week will be another busy week in grade one as we prepare for our upcoming Christmas concert on Wednesday. The music teachers have been working hard to get ready for the show. The students are very excited and I often hear them singing their concert songs to themselves as they do their work in class!

Christmas Concert - The grade one concert will take place on Wednesday, December 11th. There will be an afternoon show at 1:10pm and an evening show at 6:00pm. There is no specific dress code for the show. The children will be wearing themed headbands to match their songs.

December 2nd - 6th

Hi 1J Families!

It’s been a wonderful and exciting week in grade one! We got to candle some eggs and check on the chicks’ progress. We noticed that the chicks were getting so big that we could hardly see anything besides black in the egg! The incubator is prepared for “lockdown” this weekend. This means that we are almost at hatching time! Extra water has been added to increase the humidity, and the grade one teachers will be taking turns checking on the chicks all weekend! We have prepared the children for the fact that it is very rare for all of the eggs to hatch. There are many factors at play, and unfortunately, some chicks stop developing during the incubation process or don’t develop at all to begin with. The children have been very understanding, and we are really hoping for lots of chicks!

We suspect that we will see some “pips” in the eggs on Monday! The chick can take up to 24 hours to hatch after they have pipped (poked the first hole in the egg). On my last check this evening, I noticed that # 24 has pipped so we may have a chick first thing tomorrow morning! Most of our chicks should be hatching by Tuesday! Once they are dry and fluffy, we will transfer them to the pen and brooder that we have set up in the classroom. We will get to observe and hold the chicks for the rest of the week before they leave. I’ll try to take lots of pictures. Our classroom is going to be a very exciting place to be this week! :)

Christmas Concert - in the midst of the chick excitement, we are also preparing for the Christmas concert! The grade one concert will take place on Wednesday, December 11th. There will be an afternoon show at 1:10pm and an evening show at 6:00pm. There is no specific dress code for the show. The children will be wearing themed headbands to match their songs.

Report Cards - Report cards will go home this week (Wednesday). If you have any questions after you have received it, please reach out.

Hi 1J Families!

It was so nice to meet you all of you and chat about your child's progress. I was honoured to learn more about your child and look forward to seeing each of them tomorrow. Thank you for taking the time to meet with me, I really appreciate it.

Lots of baby chick talk these days! We will candle some of the eggs again this week, and we will observe lots of growth. By the end of the week, the embryos will be fully developed. At the start of next week, the chicks will begin to hatch! The excitement will be HIGH!

Fundations - This week we will begin Unit 5. In this unit, the students will learn glued sounds /am/ and /an/. When ‘a’ is followed by ‘m’ or ‘n’ it becomes what we call a nasal sound. Just like glued sound /all/, when we tap words with the glued sounds /am/ and /an/ it is 2 fingers glued together. For example, we would tap and sound out the word ‘ran’ ( r-an→ran), and the word ‘bam’ (b-am→bam).

Kindness presentation: On Thursday, we will have staff from the Student Well Being Team come in to do a presentation to the grade 1 and 2 students on kindness.

TD Grade One Book Giveway - At some point over the next few weeks, your child will receive a free book called, “Violet Shrink”, by Christine Balacchino. This book has several curriculum connections with the Grade 1 outcomes in Social Studies, Health, and Language Arts. I will send it home in their homework bag and you get to keep it. :)

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! We had a very exciting week in grade one! Our chicken eggs from Agriculture in the Classroom PEI arrived on Tuesday. We have been learning all about how our eggs are growing into baby chicks. Next week, we will get to candle the eggs and see how they are developing inside!

Parent teacher interviews will be taking place this week. If you would like to schedule an interview please do so by this Monday November 18th at 12pm. There will be no school this Friday due to parent teacher interviews.

November 12th - 15th

Hi 1J Families!

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! The next few weeks in the grade one wing are going to be very exciting! We will be participating in the Egg to Chick program organized by Agriculture PEI. On Tuesday, we will be receiving 30 fertilized chicken eggs which we will be incubating in our classroom. In 21 days, the eggs should hatch and we will have some baby chicks! Throughout the process, we will be learning about the chick’s development and observing by candling the eggs. It will be a great learning experience for the students and fits into our science curriculum. As the students may have told you, I have 23 laying hens and 3 roosters. But I have always bought them as day old chicks so this will be a new experience for me as well! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me and I will answer as best as I can.

Halloween - Students are welcome to wear their costumes on Halloween. We do ask that costumes are age appropriate and do not include any fake weapons or masks. Students can come to school in their costumes, and bring a change of clothes. We will be having a costume parade in the morning and then students will change into their regular clothes. We will also be spending the afternoon doing fun stations with the rest of the Grade 1 English classes. It will be a great day!

*If you wish to send in treats, we encourage treats that are pre-packaged. Please ensure they are nut-free.*

A few reminders…

Please send in silverware for your child’s snacks and lunches. I do have extras for the occasional day. Also, it is important to send a water bottle with your child. I do have extras that I provide for our class but they should only be used on occasional days.

Good afternoon 1J Families!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. I had a fabulous family vacation in NFLD but I am glad to be back with my class!

We had so much fun on our field trip to Orwell Corner last week. The children were very well behaved, and had a great time learning about how things were in the past compared to now. They got to explore a schoolhouse, store, house, blacksmith shop, and farm from many years ago. In the afternoon, they took part in a variety of activities (picking pumpkins in the field, carrying corn stalks to feed the animals, milking a goat, and a horse and carriage ride). It was a wonderful field trip!

Fundations - We completed our test for Unit 2 and have now started Unit 3. In this unit, students learn about digraphs. They were introduced to digraphs in kindergarten, so this concept will be a review. Students will learn about the digraphs “sh”, “ch”, “th”, “wh” and “ck”. Digraphs “stick together” to form one sound, even though there are two letters.

Homework - I did not send a high interest reading book home today. We will be getting new books from the library tomorrow so I will send one to go in the red folder for your child to share with you.

Headphones - If you didn’t get a chance to send in headphones yet, please send them in ASAP. I have a few extras, if needed. We will be using computers during reading and math stations as well as a weekly computer block.

Birthdays in the classroom - I will be having a monthly birthday party for the students in our classroom. I will be offering the students to either choose cupcakes or ice cream. I will go with the majority. I know we have some allergies in our classroom so I will check with families before bringing anything in. If you have any questions, please let me know.

October 15th-19th

Hi 1J Families!

I hope that everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving weekend! I was happy to have all of my family home plus my grand puppy. It made for a full hectic household! It is always nice to have everyone under the same roof and share what we are most thankful for.

In the classroom, we spent the week discussing what we were thankful for. The students had lots to share and I can tell you how thankful and grateful I am when I see them coming through our classroom door every morning. Your kids are fabulous! :)

On Tuesday, we have our field trip to Orwell Corner. The buses will leave at 9:00, so please make sure your child arrives on time for school. Students will need to bring a packed lunch, snacks and a water bottle. There will be no hot lunches on the field trip. Also, most of the field trip will be outside so children need to bring weather appropriate clothing. We are so excited for our field trip!

Cotton Park Field Trip: Information/details going home Tuesday, October 1st, in your child’s homework bag. Field trip is Friday, October 4th, AM. Please return permission form as soon as possible.

Headphones for Chromebooks: Could you please purchase and send in a pair of headphones to use for Chromebook time? We started practicing going on Chromebooks as a whole class and eventually we will incorporate Chromebook time into our Literacy/Math centers. Having headsets on will ensure your child can hear the phonics program they are doing, listening to books being read to them, numeracy program, etc, while not disturbing the other groups that are not on chromebooks. If this is a challenge for any families, please let me know.

Picture Day: The grade one English classes will have school pictures taken on October 8th.

Homework: I will be sending home a red homework folder starting on Tuesday. It will contain a few books that your child can read independently and a few high interest library books. Please don’t stress about this, just do what your family can manage.

Hi Families!

I hope each of you enjoyed the weekend and an extra day with your children.

It was nice to meet many of you on Wednesday night! We had a great second week of grade one. We continued to work on all of our routines, read lots of great books, reviewed numbers 1-10 and continued with our first Fundations unit. We started a reward system in the classroom. We are currently working to earn a pj day in the classroom for Friday but it looks like we may earn it before Friday. I will keep you updated! We have a fabulous class!

Terry Fox Run: On Friday, September 27th, we will participate in a school wide walk/skip/run. We will use the path along the perimeter of the front playground for 20 minutes! If you’d like to make a donation to the Terry Fox Foundation, you can send in a loonie or toonie to school with your child or you can visit Mr. Meuse’s website to make a donation https://sites.google.com/cloud.edu.pe.ca/glen-stewart-primary-physical-/home. This is totally optional!

Orange Shirt Day: On Friday, September 27th, we will also participate in Orange Shirt Day. In grade one, we do not discuss the nature of Orange Shirt day. Instead, families can discuss this at home in a way that is appropriate for their child. We will be discussing inclusion and celebrating differences!

Picture Day: The grade one English classes will have school pictures taken on October 8th.

Hi Families!

I hope each of you enjoyed the weekend! I look forward to getting to know your children a little bit more each day. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. Your children are very important to me and I plan to support them in every way possible.

It was such a fun first full week of Grade 1! We continued to work on all of our routines, read lots of great books and started our first Fundations unit. I am looking forward to meeting all of you on Wednesday evening at Meet the Teacher. Our time is limited but I will try to fit in as much as possible.

Hi Families!!

We had a great first two days of grade one! We are learning lots of new routines, building friendships and getting to know each other. This week we will continue to practice routines and establish expectations. I'm looking forward to our first full week together!

Photos: I’ll be taking photos of the kiddos and the various activities we do in 1B. I will post these photos under the "Our Classroom" tab at the top of my website. There is a Media Release form that parents sign in September (sent home the first day of school). Section A of the Media Release Form allows me to share your child's photo. If you select no, I won't be including your child in class photos. Please let me know if you do NOT want your child's photo on our class website.

Hot Lunches: Our Hot Lunch program will begin tomorrow, Monday, September 9th. To place these orders, you will need to create a new account (even if you had one last year) and place your orders for next week by 9pm tonight (Sunday).

Microwave: We have a microwave in our classroom to warm up food for lunch! Due to class size and limited time for lunch, each child is limited to 30 seconds for the microwave. Please don't send KD cups or frozen dinners as they take a long time to heat up and then cool down to eat.

Monday: Cheese Pizza (Papa Johns)

Tuesday: Chicken Poppers (5 breaded chicken pieces and a small breadstick - Papa Johns)

Wednesday: Grilled Cheese (Borrowed Kitchen)

Thursday: Subway (ham, turkey and veggie)

Friday: Cheese Pizza (Stratford Pizza Corner)

Breakfast Program: Our breakfast program begins this week and is open for all students! Breakfast is available between 8:00 and 8:25 daily.
