It is a very important that students take a book walk or "Sneak Peek" to look at the pictures on every page and think about what is happening in the story before trying to read the words. This is a good habit that we want readers to practice as it gets them thinking about the story.
As students are reading they should be thinking about these 3 strategies and if what they read doesn't look right, make sense or sound right they need to go back and reread to try it again.
Students should work on high words every night to recognize them in a "Snap" so they are not spending time trying to solve them when reading.

These are strategies to help students solve tricky words. They might need to try more than one strategy to solve a word. "Getting a running start" means to reread the sentence to solve a word.
Students have their own Read To Self chart in class to refer to during independent reading time. We review this often so students can check on themselves that they are ready to read and learn. This would be a good visual to review with your child at home before they read their homework books.
