Class of 2022 letter from School Counseling Office
Class of 2022,
We hope that you are all enjoying the last few weeks of junior year and are starting to feel some sense of normalcy during this time. This will be an exciting summer/fall for all of you. We hope that you have all had some time to think about your future plans and have done some research on the steps you will need to take to continue on your path. Our hope is to make this process as enjoyable and stress free as possible. We want to be sure that we are here to support you through senior year.
It is important to think about your plans coming into your senior year. Many of you have already met with us to let us know your plans and we look forward to helping you all through the process.
Although we are not in the office during the summer we will continue to respond to questions via email that you may have as often as possible. As we look to return to CHS in the fall of 2021 we will use a few different methods of working with seniors on the different ins and outs of applications. It is important to familiarize yourself with Naviance, Commonapp, and FAFSA and even some of you with CSS Profile.
Many of you will be applying to college using the Commonapp, so please check out that site www.commonapp.org The Commonapp opens on August 1st, so you may want to begin working on that once it opens. If you sign up for an account be sure to write down your username and password in a safe spot. It is very hard to recover them if forgotten and make sure you DO NOT create a second account for Commonapp.
If you have not yet done so it is important to look at any schools you are interested in and figure out what the admission deadlines are and also does the school offer an early application date? If you are considering applying to a school early, then it is important that you know what will be required to do that. It would be a really good idea to finish up your college essay this summer if you are considering applying early. GPAs will be updated about a week after school ends so you can see what you will be applying with as your GPA by logging into your Naviance account. It is important to check colleges you are interested in and what they list as an average GPA and (if required) SAT scores for accepted applicants. This information will help you ahead of time to know what the college is looking for in an applicant and if you are a good match for the school.
If you have not taken the SAT or ACT you should plan to register. However be advised that most schools have moved to test optional. We will hold a School-Day SAT on 10/13/2021, sign up with take place the first week of school.
The FAFSA opens on October 1, 2021 for students entering college in the fall of 2022. The web-site for FAFSA is https://fafsa.ed.gov/ This is a FREE application for Federal Student Aid. There is never a charge. Please make sure you are using this site only. We will offer an online Financial Aid night in the fall. We hope all students and parents/guardians will attend. Some colleges also require a CSS profile for financial aid. Some families have missed the deadlines for the CSS in the past and it requires lots and lots of information. Please make sure you look at the CSS web-site https://student.collegeboard.org/css-financial-aid-profile and talk with your parents about it if you are applying to a school that requires the CSS profile.
We look forward to working with all of you during this exciting journey. We will continue to always do our best to support each and every one of you. We hope you enjoy the rest of your junior year and are ready for your summer and final year of high school!
