The Texas A–F Accountability System was created by state law (House Bill 22, 2017) to help schools and districts focus on improving student learning and closing achievement gaps. The goal is to make sure every student—no matter their background—has the opportunity to succeed after high school.
Each year, schools and districts receive a letter grade (A–F) that shows how well they are supporting student achievement and growth. The grades are based on fair and transparent measures that parents and educators can easily understand.
The A–F system looks at three main areas:
Student Achievement – How well students perform on the STAAR test, along with graduation rates and measures of college, career, and military readiness for high schools.
School Progress – How much students are improving academically from year to year.
Closing the Gaps – How well schools are ensuring that all student groups (including those from different backgrounds and learning needs) are successful.
For most campuses, the higher score between Student Achievement or School Progress counts for 70% of the overall grade, and Closing the Gaps counts for 30%.
The A–F ratings give families, educators, and communities a clear picture of how schools are performing and where support may be needed. These ratings help celebrate success and guide improvements so that every student in Texas can be ready for the future—whether that means college, career, or military service.
