Frequently Asked Questions

• What do students need to know when coming to high school?

-They are not alone. Teachers are there to help.

-Students start learning the first day and everything builds in those first lessons. Be present in class.

-Find out your teacher’s best way to communicate. (email, phone, etc.)

-Your parents have a right to look at your PowerSchool (and should do so regularly!)

-You cannot put off your work until the end of the grading period. There is no way to make up 9 weeks of

work in 2 days.

• What do students need in order to succeed?

-Good Attitude, Focus, Determination, Strong Work Ethic

-Respect for Others

-Bring laptops charged and ready to use.

-Students must complete assignments missed because of absences.

-It is the student’s responsibility to ask about work missed.

• What do students struggle with the most?

-Follow through – It’s one thing to say you are going to study, but it’s another to do it!

-Freedom – You have to learn to handle the freedom you have – with freedom comes responsibility.

-Balancing academics with sports and extra-curricular

-Behavior (dress code, referrals, etc)

-Challenge yourself but be realistic

-Staying up to date with grades and assignments

• Will we attend homeroom daily?

On the first day of school, students will meet in their homerooms to go over important paperwork, discuss

school wide expectations, and procedures and give students a chance to ask questions. After the first week

of school, students will meet in their homerooms every Monday during PRIDE.

• How many credits does it take to be a sophomore?

6 credits total, 2 of those must be English I and Math

• How many credits does it take to graduate?

4 English/4 Math/3 Science/4 Social Studies/1 Health & PE/Electives = 28 credits

• What is PRIDE?

From 11-12 daily, students will split their time between lunch and intervention classes. (Exception:

Mondays – Freshman will have homeroom first and then go to lunch) Students need to take advantage of

the intervention time. Teachers may assign a class for students or students may choose to go to that

teacher for interventions. There are many reasons to go to a specific class: teacher assigned, you missed a

test, struggling with concepts, questions about material learned, working on a missed assignment, etc. Use

this time wisely!


• Do students actually use the lockers?

You are more than welcome to use a locker. (cost $3.00) Some students feel that they do not need/want

one because of the spacing of their classes. Students may carry a bookbag to class.

• Do students have to get their haircut to join AFJROTC?

They must meet Air Force grooming standards. For guys, hair cannot touch the ears or eyebrows or be

taller than 1-1/2”. For girls, hair cannot extend below the bottom of the collar or exceed 3” in bulk. It

may be braided or put in a bun.

• Where may students eat lunch?

Students eat lunch in the cafeteria or in teacher classrooms if the teacher has given permission. They do

not leave campus for lunch.

• When and how can I sign up for Driver’s Education?

Students must be 14 1⁄2 to take the driver’s education class. The next class offered is Oct. 14th and the

student must have been born on or before April 14, 2005. You may register in the front office. The class

is offered after school from 3:15-6:15, Monday-Friday for 2 weeks and the cost is $65.00.

• Do 9th graders need to take the PSAT?

If the student is taking Math 2 Honors, they can take the PSAT in the Spring. Dates will be

announced later in the year and it will be taken during the school day. All students will be eligible to take

the PSAT next year.

• What does A day/B day and blocked/unblocked mean in our schedule?

1st and 2nd periods are semester long classes. You will have 4 classes listed – 2 for each semester.

3rd and 4th periods also have 4 classes but operate on a A/B day schedule, meaning they alternate

throughout the entire year (M/W/F or T/TH). Let us know if you have any questions about this!

• Should I be doing anything with colleges right now?

Yes! There are many things a student can do in the 9th grade. Most important is passing your classes.

There are scholarships you can apply for in the 9th grade and actually receive which is

great news! Mrs. Pond would be happy to speak to you about these opportunities. You can

also research colleges and put together a folder for what is needed for that school – Do you need foreign

language? What scores are required on ACT/SAT? Do they require recommendation letters? (build those

relationships with teachers/coaches/staff!) Do community service! Visit CFNC and commonapp.com and
