AIG Identification begins in third grade.
Students who work with the AIG Specialist in grades K-2 ARE NOT identified as AIG.
-Multiple criteria are considered when deciding if a student will be identified as gifted, including quantitative and qualitative measures. Quantitative measures may include STAR Reading, STAR Math, EOG, the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT), and for third grade only the Beginning of Grade test. Qualitative measures refer to other observable indicators of giftedness, which may include an observed behavior checklist or work samples.
-Qualifying test scores for AIG are 90th percentile and above for achievement tests and/or 121 and above for ability tests. Achievement tests generally test knowledge students should have acquired at a certain time. The BOG and EOG test grade level specific material and are considered achievement tests. Ability tests generally test aptitude for verbal and mathematical learning, regardless of what has or has not been learned. They are sometimes referred to as IQ tests. The NNAT is an ability test. Students who meet at least one of the required qualifying test scores may be administered an additional abilities test, the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT).
-Percentiles do not refer to the number of questions answered correctly on a test. They tell how well each student did on a test as compared to the normed group that took the test. A score of 90th percentile means that the student did better than 90% of the students in the norming group that took the test. It does not indicate that the student correctly answered 90% of the questions on the test.
-Students may be considered for AIG identification in later grades if they are not identified in third grade.
-The AIG Needs Determination Team makes all decisions concerning AIG placement. This committee meets as needed when a referral is made and after each set of standardized test scores are received. Teachers and parents may refer students for placement testing. Participating in placement testing does not mean a student will qualify for AIG.
