Welcome Message

Hello Fifth Graders and Families!

I am excited to have everyone back in the classroom this year. I can't wait to share our reading and writing experiences together. My hope is for every student to discover and enjoy a new author, genre, or series that they have never read before. And I will encourage students to take risks with their writing as we examine the many ways language is used to express ideas.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Stiles

Homework Routine

Students will be required to read for 20 minutes every night. On Monday night they will read a Time For Kids article and answer questions. For the rest of the week, they can chose their own text. A reading log will be assigned to record the title, pages read and a response. The reading logs are due on Monday of the following week. If a student had to miss a night of reading, it can be made up over the weekend.

Study Skills

Each week we will be doing a Word Study or Sentence Study.

During a Word Study week, students will be given 10 words. By the end of the week, the students should be able to spell and define the words. Word lists will have common spelling patterns, prefixes, suffixes, or root words to help students develop their understanding of how words work.

During a Sentence Study week, we will be analyzing how an author uses a grammar or language skill to express an idea, and we will experiment with that skill in our own writing (i.e. dialogue, using conjunctions, or figurative language).

All word lists and sentence study notes will be posted in Google Classroom.

Scholastic Book Ordering

My class participates in the Scholastic Book Club. Every month, flyers will be sent home with current book options. It is a great way to get students excited about reading. Each order also gives the class points to buy additional books for our class library.
