Eighth Grade ELA

Hi!  My name is Mrs. Wilson and I am your child’s language arts teacher!

I am excited to be working with you and your child this school year!

I love using technology in the classroom, creating opportunities for students to work and learn together, and bringing real-world applications of skills to the classroom to engage students.  I am looking forward to working with you this year, and I plan to make all of our experiences the best possible!

I expect my students to complete their assigned classwork to the best of their ability.  Classwork and participation will count as 50%.  This includes any independent or group work completed in class like organizers and exit tickets.  Assessments will count as 35% of the final grade.  These can be in the form of quizzes, tests, or projects.  Zeros will be put in the grade book for missing and late assignments. I do not accept assignments after they are more than 1 week late unless there are extenuating circumstances.  Students will complete reading log homework each week, as well as vocabulary work bi-weekly.  Homework is graded and will count as 15% of the final grade.  I believe that reading independently is essential for students to be successful.  There will be a reading challenge introduced to students during the first week of school.

I ask that you would consider signing up for Remind.  It is a quick sign-up that will allow me to send helpful reminders to you and your child about upcoming events, due dates, and other important information.  Text @ces2024 to the number 81010 and you will receive a welcome text from Remind.

If you have any questions or would like to get a hold of me, my email is wilsonc@clementon.k12.nj.us.

I look forward to working with you this year.

 Course Overview

This year in ELA we will be reading texts from Scope, NewsELA, Commonlit, and core novels I have chosen to teach and enrich the 8th-grade student learning standards.  Each marking period will focus on different standards and we will be reading for different purposes.  The writing component will pair with our readings and each marking period will be centered around a particular writing style.  I hope that you will find the readings to be enjoyable and relatable to your life.

About ME

I grew up in Clementon!  I still have family roots here and I am proud of our awesome, little town.  I have been teaching at CES for 20 years, with over half of that time being in eighth grade.  I love the students and staff and am proud to be a Bulldog!  My husband and I have 2 boys ages 8 and 10.  We are an active family and enjoy Martial Arts and anything sports-related.  We have two pups and two hamsters that help keep life interesting.
