Aly is an Investor on the Closed Loop Ventures Group platform - the seed and pre-seedinvestment division of Closed Loop Partners focused on catalyzing innovations in the circular economy. She supports sourcing, diligence, transactions, and portfolio management. Prior to Closed Loop, Aly was an Engagement Manager in McKinsey & Company’s Sustainability and Energy practices. She has deep expertise in cross-value chain innovations and cutting edge technologies supporting circular business models in advanced manufacturing, textiles, building products, and consumer goods. Aly has supported companies ranging from early- and growth-stage start-ups to Fortune 50 enterprises with a focus on operations, investment and top-of-house strategy. Aly earned her Master’s from the London School of Economics and Political Science and her BA from Davidson College. Originally from the Midwest, Aly currently resides in New York City where her love for fresh pressed beet juice may have tipped the scales to an obsession.
Hilary Flynn’s career has focused on the intersection of policy, technology, and markets for emerging technologies. She is currently the Managing Director of Investments for Massachusetts Clean Energy Center where she oversees the Commonwealth’s venture capital investments in ClimateTech startups. Prior to this role she was Head of US Offshore Wind for National Grid Ventures where she led the company’s effort to enter the nascent US offshore wind development business, and was Director of Incubation at National Grid Partners, the company’s venture capital and innovation group. Hilary was previously the Managing Consultant of Asia Pacific consulting, based in Singapore, for technology advisory firm Lux research and an energy policy analyst for MJ Bradley & Associates.
A sought-after investor and advisor for companies at the intersection of technology and climate impact, David Miller brings over twenty-five years of technology startup management experience and over twenty years of seed stage investing experience to Clean Energy Ventures as a founding partner. Previously, David was the founder and Executive Managing Director of the Clean Energy Venture Group. Prior to that, he was a Director in the New Ventures Group at Lucent Technologies, and founder and CEO of Quantum Telecom Solutions. David has been on the board of directors of several clean energy companies, including CEV portfolio companies Boston Materials, Pearl Certification and Volexion, prior portfolio companies Pika Energy, and MyEnergy, and has advised and mentored many others. He was a founding member of the MIT Enterprise Forum’s Energy Special Interest Group, chaired the mentor program for what is now the Cleantech Open Northeast for its first four years, and has served as a judge for the Cleantech Open Northeast for every year of its existence. He is an Advisory Board Member of the MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative, where he also has an appointment as Research Affiliate, and previously taught electrical engineering at Rutgers University. He completed his doctorate at MIT where he developed the CleanStart clean energy startup simulator, and runs workshops utilizing CleanStart as well as the En-ROADS climate change solutions simulator. He developed the methodology behind CEV’s Simple Emissions Reduction Calculator (SERC) in order to most quickly and effectively screen which startup companies have the most potential to reduce GHG emissions at scale and supports industry efforts to standardize emission reduction assessments.
Bala Nagarajan is a Managing Director at NextEra Energy Investments. Leaning on his prior entrepreneurial experiences and deep domain knowledge, Bala leads with empathy to build synergistic relationships between portfolio companies and NextEra. Prior to NextEra, he was Managing Director at Huck Capital where he led fund raising, deal diligence and execution efforts. Previously, Bala was a founding member of Equinor’s clean energy ventures team based in London. Bala relocated to NYC to establish and lead Equinor Ventures’ Americas team and also served on the investment committee. His clean energy transaction experience spans from venture capital investments in startups across geographies (US, Europe, Brazil, MENA) and verticals (storage, EV, DER) to corporate M&A and buyout deals. Bala is a Chartered Accountant from India and MBA graduate from IESE Business School, Spain. He started his career at PwC, worked at Arthur Andersen, Citi and Lehman Brothers before co-founding and becoming the CEO of Dawn Energy, a clean energy startup based in London.
Carlos Nouel is responsible for enabling the transformation of the electric distribution business through multi-year investments in areas such as advanced metering and grid modernization functionality. In his role, Carlos is responsible for deploying the field technologies as well as modifying internal processes to unlock the value from the new solutions. He is also responsible for managing all the modernization efforts around the customer billing systems and the data platform.
Prior to this role, Carlos was the VP of New Energy Solutions (NES) where he was responsible for develop new products and services for customers. Prior to that he was the Director of Partnerships for the same team. Carlos has also played different roles within National Grid, including in areas such as Energy Efficiency, Procurement, Supply Chain, Smart Grid and Transformation office.
Prior to joining National Grid, Carlos worked for companies such as Pfizer, British American Tobacco, IBM and AES primarily in the supply chain and operations area. Carlos holds an M.B.A. from Hult International Business School, and a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Andres Bello Catholic University in Venezuela. He also earned the Advanced Certificate for Executives in Management, Innovation and Technology from MIT Sloan School of Business. In 2015 Carlos was named one of the Worcester Business Journal’s top business leaders under the age of 40 in its annual “40 Under 40” rankings. In 2017 was recognized as one of the top 40 Innovators by the Public Utility Fortnightly magazine.
Carlos currently sits on the board of Directors for the Design Lighting Consortium which is a non-profit organization whose mission is to drive efficient lighting by defining quality, facilitating thought leadership, and delivering tools and resources to the lighting market through open dialogue and collaboration.
Ryan grew up in the central valley, known both as the agricultural heart of California and home to many of the oil reservoirs that supply petroleum and natural gas to California. Ryan started his career as a data analyst in oil & gas and transitioned into clean energy early in his career.
Over the past decade, he has worked with utilities, state and local government, and startups on business model transformation, technology deployment, and industry innovation in the energy sector. Recently, Ryan has shifted his focus towards the capital, specifically Venture Capital and Project Finance, to better understand how they can drive the development and deployment of technology addressing challenges in the energy and climate space. Ryan now works as an Associate at Azolla Ventures, an early-stage fund investing in companies with the potential for gigaton scale emissions reduction potential.
In addition to work, Ryan is passionate about volunteering. Ryan is an alum of the University of California, Davis, and is currently finishing his Masters Degree in Systems Engineering at The Johns Hopkins University.
