The Greek New Testament Study App was inspired by the outstanding GreekKit app by Casey Perkins. It is by far (IMHO) the best app for reading the New Testament in Greek. Unfortunately it is only available on iOS. This program began as my poor attempt to replicate in Android what I considered to be GreekKit's most outstanding features of reading and searching the Greek New Testament.

But as so often happens in programming projects, feature creep began to set in. We haven't quite reached Zawinski's Law, but it can't be long. Since I wrote this in LiveCode, which can cross-compile, I decided to make desktop versions and an iOS version. And then I decided to include things that I wish that I'd had when I was first studying Greek. So there is reference section of Greek grammatical forms, a Verb Form Review to practice recognizing verb forms, and a Vocabulary tutor. (This Vocabulary tutor is based on the Anki flashcard app.)

The Greek text of the New Testament used in this app is the SBL Greek New Testament produced by the Society of Biblical Literature and Logos Bible Software. The entire New Testament academic community is deeply in their debt both for the work that it took to produce this edition as well as their decision to make it freely available under a Creative Commons License. I obtained the text from their GitHub project.

The English translation of the New Testament used in this app is the Lexham English Bible, also produced by Logos Bible Software and made available by them freely for non-Commercial works. You can find their (very generous) licensing requirements here. I obtained a copy of their work from this GitHub project.

The dictionary definitions used in this app come primarily from John Jeffrey Dodson's lexicon which he prepared as part of his book The Greek New Testament for Beginning Readers : The Byzantine Greek Text and then placed in the public domain. The copyright notice for his lexicon reads as follows:

I obtained Dr. Dodson's lexicon through this GitHub project which has taken his PDF file and made it machine-readable.

In places where Dodson's lexicon did not include adequate definitions for words found in the SBLGNT, glosses were obtained from the Perseus' Project Digital Library of Tufts University. They offer GitHub repositories of all their materials under a Creative Commons License.

The morphological parsing of the SBLGNT comes from MorphGNT: SBLGNT Edition made available under a Creative Commons License.

The grammatical forms in the Study section come mostly from the Wiktionary Ancient Greek grammar tables which are made available under a Creative Commons License and from the online Greek textbook Ancient Greek for Everyone: Essential Morphology and Syntax for Beginning Greek by Wilfred E. Major and Michael Laughy which is also made available under a Creative Commons License.

The vocabulary lists for the textbooks by Black, Duff, and Mounce were compiled by Paul Denisowski and kindly made available by him at his website. The vocabulary for Cory's textbook was compiled by Laura Gibbs and kindly made available by her at her website.

The Gentium Plus and Galatia SIL fonts are both produced by SIL International and are made available under the SIL Open Font License. The SBL Greek font is provided freely (for non-Commercial use) by the Society of Biblical Literature. Their license can be found here. The Literata and Montserrat fonts are part of Google Fonts and are both licensed under the SIL Open Font License.

The Lexham English Bible does not include the shorter version of Mark in their translation. So in order for the English text to match up with the Greek text, I provided my own fairly literal translation (and a translator's note) in the style of the LEB.

All the program data is stored in an SQLite database. SQLite is a truly amazing piece of software and has been graciously put in the public domain by its authors at Hipp, Wyrick & Company.

RimuHosting generously provides storage space on their Bakop backup servers for storing users' data for backups and synchronization across devices. Their response time to support issues is unbelievable, measured in seconds. And I've yet to have an issue they couldn't fix immediately. If you have hosting needs, check them out.

All the database files were created using Perl to analyze and process the raw text and morphological data. The Perl language is generously made available freely by its creator, Larry Wall, and its myriad of contributors. Perl is licensed under the GNU General Public License.
