Lincoln Public School Music Extension Programs are an extension of the instrumental and vocal programs of Lincoln Public Schools. All students who wish to participate must meet both of the following requirements:
Be enrolled in the Lincoln Public Schools District for 5 credits or the equivalent of one class for each semester of participation.
For private or homeschool families looking to enroll their students as a part-time LPS student, you still need to apply for homeschool through NDE. Complete the LPS part-time enrollment form.
Participate in a large ensemble within the instrumental music program at their school (LPS, Private, or Homeschool), that supports their instrument for which they participate in Lincoln Youth Symphony.
Lincoln Public School students attending LPS specialty schools (i.e. Zoo School) are still required to participate in a public high school band or orchestra in order to participate in LYS.
All students are expected to participate in their school ensemble for the full academic year. In the event of an unforeseen schedule conflict that prevents an LPS student from participating in their high school ensemble (due to academic graduation requirements or course sequence), students will work with LYS personnel on an individual basis to consider the options below. LYS personnel must receive proof from a high school counselor that no other options exist for the student to fill the course requirement and enroll in instrumental music.
Option 1: Student with permission of ensemble director and Director of the Focus Programs schedules a Class of One and alternates days with Focus Class and ensemble class at home school. Transportation is up to the student.
Option 2: Student enrolls in an ensemble class at another LPS high school which may fit into their schedule. Transportation is up to the student.
Option 3: Homeschool orchestra may be approved by the ensemble director and director of the LYS, on a case by case basis, only IF option 1 and 2 does not work.
