PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT
As a music educator, I believe it is my responsibility to give every student, regardless of physical or intellectual ability or socio-economic status opportunities to grow and discover their own unique musical identity through formal instrumental music instruction. In my opinion, creating a well-rounded musician means not only teaching students practical musical skills, but also encouraging them to participate in performance opportunities and learning to appreciate all forms of music. Providing a safe and welcoming environment for my students where they feel free to be themselves and make mistakes is key to helping students reach their full potential.
I believe the backbone of a complete music education centers around meeting the National and State Standards for Music Education. Not only do these standards encompass the skills needed to play an instrument, but they give students opportunities to collaborate and learn hands on about the music they are playing. Creating a space for students to be actively engaged and involved in their own education is essential in creating independent musicians who are capable not only of performing but creating and evaluating their own music as well.
One of the best things we can do for our students is to act more as a facilitator than a dictator of their education. I am learning from my students everyday just as much as they are learning from me. Creating an environment that allows students to share their input not only makes them feel heard but allows them to use their knowledge to make informed decisions. One way I will do this is by giving students the chance to help choose concert repertoire. Every student comes from a unique background. Creating concerts with repertoire that embrace these differences allows us to create a much more meaningful experience for everyone involved.
I feel that it is my duty as a music educator is to cultivate a life-long love of music in my students while also allowing them to become well rounded, unique musicians. I will give students the opportunity to engage in activities that require them to work with others, become more disciplined, and creative. I hope to cultivate in them the same love and appreciation for music that I see as such an important part of my life.
