Hello Irving families, students & staff,
September is here and that also means we'll get to enjoy cool mornings & evenings with summer like temperatures during the day. Fall is a favorite time in middle school for a variety of reasons. Students remain excited with the 'newness' of the school year, positive relationships are continually fostered between peers and with Irving staff and after school activities are underway! Our staff continue to focus on engagement by diving into curriculum, developing and teaching engaging lessons and ensuring authentic learning for all students. We have many exciting Irving events this month and we appreciate your partnership!

HOMEWORK HUB: AN OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL STUDENTS!
Homework Hub is a fantastic resource available for all Irving students! Several Irving teachers sponsor Homework Hub and help students complete daily homework assignments, complete missing work, study for upcoming assessments and create a space for students to focus on learning and develop strong study habits.
Homework Hub occurs Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afterschool from 3:10 - 4:00. Any student is welcome and sometimes if/when a student has a missing assignment or needs a space to complete an assignment, teachers will reach out to families to assign Hub to ensure students have every opportunity to successfully complete and turn in assignments.
Several Irving teachers are sponsoring Homework Hub! Cathy Mohlman is our Homework Hub liaison & her email address is cmohlman@lps.org.
The fall season of intramural sports is upon us! Athletes who have expressed interest in our fall sports have had individual team meetings sharing tryout information, practice schedules, and google classroom codes for athletes to find any important announcements for day to day information. This includes game and meet schedules, practice changes, etc. Athletes are expected to check this daily and communicate information home to families. If athletes skip practice, they are expected to communicate with their coaches ahead of time whenever possible.
In order for students to participate in athletics at Irving or any other middle school within LPS, parents MUST complete the Parent Athletic Form which can be found by going to the LPS website and using the jump code BDPT to access the form. THIS does not need to be completed if students have had a paper copy signed. It can also be accessed by clicking on this link. If families would prefer a paper copy of the form, students can stop by room 032 or pick up a form from the office. If students do not have this form filled out by the first day of practice, that student cannot practice with the team and cannot attend until the form is completed. Information about individual sports can be found below:
Only immediate family is allowed to attend games and any sibling or child in the household who is not participating in the game or meet can be in attendance must have an adult to supervise. Students not playing are not allowed to attend and will be asked to leave. Schools do not have the space nor supervision to allow additional spectators.

Each September, we celebrate National Suicide Prevention Month. We continue to see too many lives being lost to suicide in our country, and in our community. We know that suicide can seem like a scary, heavy topic – and it is. But by shining a light on this important topic, and approaching it with a hopeful message, we know that we can save lives. By supporting loved ones or colleagues who may be struggling; by asking someone how they’re doing; checking in; offering a kind word or smile; letting someone know they are not alone and that there is hope and healing. All of these things can save a life. We encourage you to focus on that as we approach one of the most important months of the year.
To partner with you, we will be sharing information with students about warning signs, protective factors and how to connect with trusted adults. Students will be viewing THIS video that was created by our LPS Hope Squads.
One of the best ways to help your child’s emotional health is to remember these basics; get plenty of sleep, drink water, eat nutritious foods, spend time outside and find ways to relax and connect with others.
If you are concerned about your child, please reach out to your school social worker or school counselor for guidance and support.
If you have immediate needs outside of school hours, you can call 911, CenterPointe Crisis Line at 402-475-6695 or The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988.
Keeping Track of Library Books
Would you like to help your student keep track of the books they have checked out from the school library? Here’s how:
Begin at portal.lps.org
Enter your student’s ID and password (If you don’t have this information, the school office can provide it for you)
Select “Destiny Discover” from the alphabetical listing in the portal.
From the upper right hand corner of the screen, select login and click the Blue LPS Portal button.
On the top row, click on the drop menu “My Stuff”.
Select “Checkouts” to see the books that are currently checked out.
Digital Citizenship Tips
At the beginning of the school year all LPS students review Chromebook expectations and the Responsible Use Agreement (RUA) for Chromebook use. Click here to learn more about Chromebook use in LPS and to review the expectations outlined in the RUA. Here are some questions to start a conversation at home about Chromebook expectations:
How do you take care of your Chromebook?
When can you use your Chromebook?
What settings can you change on your Chromebook?

September is upon us and we are all adjusting to the new routines! As we settle into the year, it is the perfect time to reinforce our school expectations with your student(s).
We talk a lot about teaching and reteaching expectations. This is not just about reminding our students of the rules; it is about actively practicing them. Think of it like learning to ride a bike. We do not just tell a child how to do it, we show them, guide them, and let them practice until it becomes routine.
The same goes for things like walking quietly in the hallways, treating others with respect, and staying on task in the classroom. By consistently reviewing these expectations and supporting students to practice them, we help students build a strong foundation for a successful school year. This helps our school community run smoothly and creates a positive and predictable environment where everyone feels safe and can focus on learning.
You can help at home by asking your child about the expectations for their classroom and what they look like in practice. This partnership between home and school is what truly makes a difference!

Donations to the Aardvark Store
Irving students earn 'positive reports' from Irving staff when they meet our expectations to be safe, respectful and responsible. In turn, the 'positive reports' are used as currency in the Aardvark Store! If you'd like to donate peanut free snacks, drinks or school supplies-the link to donate is below! Our Aardvark store is a busy place!

LPS wants to protect students and families from full financial responsibility for Chromebook repairs and/or replacement. More details about CAP can be found here: LPS Chromebook Assurance Program (CAP). Enrollment in this optional, but HIGHLY RECOMMENDED program is available until the end of September.
The premium for participation in CAP is $20, annually (or $10 for students who qualify for Free/Reduced Lunch Program) and will appear as a fee in Synergy ParentVUE/StudentVUE for all students in late July. You have two payment options if you choose to participate in the program:
Pay online via Credit Card (via ParentVUE)

If you do not choose to participate in the program, the fee can be ignored and will be removed after September.
Please contact the school office for instructions and an activation key if you are new to Synergy ParentVUE.

Save yourself a phone call by using ParentVUE to report full-day absences (partial day absences still require a call to the school office to specify what time the student will be gone). There is also a place to add a note if more explanation or details are needed. The attendance office will view and process the information you enter.
If using the ParentVUE app (phones & tablets):
Select the appropriate student and click the blue “Report Absence” button to enter the date(s) and reason for the absence(s).
In the coming weeks, there will be a four way stop installed at Lake St and 22nd St. Currently, there is a two way stop with stop signs on 22nd St. Stop signs will now be added to Lake Street as well. This will hopefully reduce speeding on Lake St and it will enhance the safety of everyone using that intersection (people in vehicles and students walking).
In addition, you may have noticed, the morning drop off & after school pick up at Irving is a busy time. In order to keep our students safe and to increase efficiency, we have worked with our district safety and security personnel to develop a traffic plan for before school drop off & after school pick up. This plan was established in 2022-2023, and reviewed regularly as we promote a safe drop off/pick up process. You will notice at the beginning of the year, administrators will be at student cross walks before and after school and there will be an increase in supervision as we know it will take all of us working together to ensure the new traffic plan is a success. Below is a link that describes the plan in detail:
BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL SUPERVISION & EXPECTATIONS (REPEAT REMINDER)
BEFORE SCHOOL
Breakfast at Irving occurs from 7:30-7:53. Students eating breakfast will enter through the main entrance (Door #1-the only unlocked door during this time) and go directly to the cafeteria. When students are finished eating, they are expected to clean up their area and they may wait in the cafeteria for the bell to sound at 7:53, or they may return outside to wait for the bell. If your student is running a little late, they may grab a 'grab & go' breakfast in the cafeteria on the way to first period.
Irving staff begin supervision duty outside promptly at 7:45. Students are not permitted into the building until the morning bell rings at 7:53 AM, unless they are eating breakfast, are enrolled in 'Morning Choir' or have a pass to meet with an administrator, counselor or teacher. 7th grade students enter the building through Door #1, 8th grade students (and breakfast attenders) enter through Door #2 and 6th grade students enter the building through Door #19.
**If we are experiencing inclement weather, 6th grade students may enter the building through Door #19 and will be supervised in the 6th grade hallway, 7th grade students may enter through Door #1 and will be monitored in the main hallway and 8th grade students may enter through Door #2 and will be supervised in the back area of the cafeteria.**
AFTER SCHOOL
Irving staff supervise student dismissal each day until 3:10. Students should leave school grounds by 3:15 each day UNLESS they are participating in an after school club, Homework Hub, intramural activities, have made arrangements to work with a teacher or have been assigned after school detention time. Students participating in programming at the Rec Center are also expected to be at the Rec Center by 3:10 each day. If a student is late to the Rec Center, the Irving staff working with the student, will write a pass for the student to participate in programming at the Rec Center.
Please encourage your child to leave school grounds promptly after school. We are happy to work with families if/when students need to remain after school on occasion due to transportation conflicts.
After School Program
Lincoln Parks and Recreation has been serving Irving Middle School families after school since 1977. Much has changed in the past 39 years, and we believe supervised, safe, fun, and meaningful after school activities are as important as ever for middle school students. Some students visit the rec. center simply because they need a place to go after school; however, our staff is intentional about making the center "more than just a place to go." After school staff does this by focusing on a positive environment, supportive relationships, and constructive programs. During after school hours at Irving Recreation Center, middle school students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of age-appropriate, fun, and enriching activities. Students can stay as busy as they’d like with homework, clubs, and special events, or they can simply choose to socialize with friends. We encourage all students to be engaged and take advantage of the activity choices available at the rec. center.
HOURS
Irving Rec. Center is open exclusively to Irving students upon school dismissal until 5:00 p.m. Students are welcome to stay after 5:00 p.m. when the rec center opens to the public. Closing times vary by season.
