Our Story

The Malone Center was founded in 1955 through a reorganization of the Lincoln Urban league. The league founders were determined to improve social and economic conditions and increase understanding between all races. 

Initially founded during a time in our history when civil rights for African Americans were extremely limited, the league founders, both black and white, were determined to improve social and economic conditions and increase understanding between all races. They believed that enhanced understanding between all groups of people would create a better community. 

For decades, Malone has served neighboring families, youth, seniors and the Lincoln community with inclusive, social, cultural, educational, employment and welfare services. Mr. Clyde T. Malone was the Executive Director of the Lincoln Urban league following Mr. Millard Woods, our founder.

Since 1955, The Malone Community Center has been a trusted resource in Lincoln and Omaha. As a community based organization, we work to combat poverty while promoting unity and prosperity.

OUR STORY

Culler CLC is more than an after-school program. It is a place where students can discover their interests, develop their strengths, build meaningful relationships, and grow into confident young people.

Located at Culler Middle School, Culler CLC is made possible through the partnership between Culler Middle School, The Malone Center and Lincoln CLC, along with dedicated teachers, staff, community organizations, and community partners.

Our program provides students with opportunities to learn, create, compete, explore, connect, and lead in a safe and supportive environment beyond the traditional school day.

We believe every student has interests, talents, ideas, and strengths waiting to be discovered.

Through sports, STEM, arts, writing, recreation, leadership, and other enrichment opportunities, students are encouraged to explore new experiences and discover what they enjoy and what they are capable of achieving.

DEVELOP

Discovery is only the beginning.

Culler CLC helps students develop academic skills, social-emotional skills, confidence, communication, teamwork, responsibility, character, and healthy relationships.

We want students to leave our program with more than something they participated in. We want them to leave with something they learned and something they can carry with them.

LEAD

Leadership isn't only about having a title. It is about learning how to make positive choices, take responsibility, encourage others, solve problems, and contribute to your community.

We provide students with opportunities to practice leadership through sports, clubs, service, peer relationships, special events, and everyday interactions.

Our goal is to help students recognize that their voice, choices, and actions matter.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Every student deserves an opportunity to discover what they are capable of becoming.

We believe youth development happens through relationships, meaningful experiences, consistent expectations, encouragement, and opportunities to succeed.

Culler CLC uses students' interests and passions as a starting point, then builds opportunities around those interests that help students grow academically, socially, emotionally, and personally.

The activity is the vehicle. Youth development is the mission.

CULLER MIDDLE SCHOOL + THE MALONE CENTER

Culler CLC is strengthened by the partnership between Culler Middle School and The Malone Center.

Together, we work to create opportunities that support students beyond the traditional school day while connecting families and young people with resources, experiences, and community partnerships.

This partnership allows us to bring together educators, community organizations, volunteers, and program partners to provide students with experiences that may not otherwise be available to them.

Charles Richardson

School Community Coordinator / Culler CLC Director

Charles Richardson serves as the Director for The Malone Center's Culler CLC and works to develop meaningful opportunities for students, families, and the community.

Working alongside Culler Middle School staff, The Malone Center, teachers, community partners, and CLC staff, Charles helps coordinate programming designed to support student development, engagement, and success.

WHAT DOES SUCCESS LOOK LIKE?

Success at Culler CLC doesn't look the same for every student.

For one student, success might mean completing their homework.

For another, it might mean learning a new sport.

For another, it might mean making a friend, managing a difficult emotion, creating something they're proud of, becoming a published author, or stepping into a leadership role for the first time.

Our job is to create opportunities for students to experience success—and help them recognize it when they do.
