Workshop: A Tool for Simulation and Visualization of Distributed Estimation
Date: 16 April, 2015
Time: 5:30pm to 7pm
Venue: CAMP 172
The objective of this workshop is to provide hands-on experiences with a Java-based tool used to simulate and visualize a wireless sensor network (WSN) used for distributed estimation. Hands-on activities will provide participants with a basic understanding of distributed estimation, as well as the effects of noise, number of channels, and other parameters on the performance of the system.
Agenda:
Introduction - Mahesh K. Banavar and Burak Kantarci
Distributed Estimation Basics - Mahesh K. Banavar
User Interface and Overview of Hands-on Activities - Burak Kantarci
Hands-on activities
Assessments
Closing remarks and refreshments (pizza!)
Objectives:
- To provide an overview of distributed estimation
- To provide a tool for simulating and visualizing a distributed estimation WSN
- To understand the basics of effective UI development and usability principles in software engineering
- To evaluate the effectiveness of the Java application as a teaching tool
- To collect user feedback
Audience:
The workshop is intended for participants in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Other participants with interest in signal and data analysis are also welcome to participate.
Expected Outcome:
- Participants will be able to use the Java tool to design their own distributed estimation WSN simulations
- Participants will have gained an insight into the significance of the role of noise, number of sensors, and other parameters in the performance of distributed estimation systems
- Participants will have a better understanding of the impact of the usability principles on UI-based learning
