Please have your child read 15–20 minutes each night.
Your child should read the decodable reader each night from Monday through Thursday. This can count towards the 15-20 minutes of reading. Please see the Decodable Reader section below for more information.
Each week, your child will bring home a Fluency Chart containing phonetic words and sentences that focus on the spelling concept we are learning that week.
Please complete the following each night:
Have your child read the words at the top of the chart and record how many words were read correctly.
Have your child read the sentences at the bottom of the chart for 1 minute. Record the number of words read correctly.
This should be completed once each day, Monday–Thursday.
The completed Fluency Chart should be returned to school on Friday.
A new decodable reader will come home each Monday. Your child should read the story each night, Monday through Thursday.
Each night, your child will answer 1-2 questions about the story in his/her notebook.
Please have your child return the notebook to school each day so that it can be checked.
Each Tuesday, your child will learn new Red Words, also known as sight words. These words are considered irregular and generally do not follow a regular phonetic pattern. Therefore, students should learn to recognize and memorize these words by sight rather than sound them out.
Please have your child:
Practice reading the words each night.
Practice spelling the words each night.
Review the words throughout the week in preparation for the Friday test.
Each Monday, your child will bring home a list of vocabulary words to learn for the week. Students should be able to recognize the words and understand their meanings.
You can also access these words through Reading Wonders/ConnectEd by clicking on the “Words to Know” tab. These words are also included in the weekly stories we read together in class and can be found under the “Read” tab.
Students will take a computer-based vocabulary test in class. The test is multiple choice. Tests will take place bi-weekly.
Students may have the test read aloud using the Speak to Text feature. If your child uses this feature, please make sure he/she brings headphones to school.
Students will see their test results immediately after completing the test. I also encourage you to check your child’s results by logging into his/her Reading Wonders/ConnectEd account.
To view your child’s results:
Click “My Binder” at the top left of the screen.
Click the “My Tests” tab.
Your child’s Math Home-Link workbook may be kept at home in a safe place or in his/her book bag.
Please check your child’s homework agenda each day to see what has been assigned.
The assigned Home-Link page should be removed from the workbook, completed, and placed in your child’s blue folder on the “Bring Back” side to be returned to school the following day.
The assigned Home-Link will be labeled in the top right corner of the page. For example: Home-Link 1-11.
Occasionally, I may assign a supplemental worksheet instead of a Home-Link. In this case, certain Home-Links may not be completed for homework.
If the workbook is ever misplaced, you can access and print the assigned Home-Link through the Everyday Mathematics website.

Click “Today’s Home Link.”
