My name is Tanya K. Hardy. I am currently the 5-6 instrumental music instructor at Clarke. I have been teaching for 30 years. This is my 18th year at Clarke. Prior to Clarke, I taught 5-6 Instrumental Music at Allamakee Community Schools for 11 years and 5-12 Instrumental Music for 2 years at Elk Horn-Kimballton Community Schools.
I graduated from Clarke Community Schools in 1990. I graduated from Simpson College in 1994 with a Bachelor's in Music Education. I graduated from Viterbo University in 2002 with a Master's in Elementary Education.
Fifth and sixth grade students have the opportunity to participate in the instrumental music program starting in the fall of fifth grade. Students are able to have one individual or doubled lesson once per week for 15 minutes. I serve both the middle school and elementary school buildings. I am at the middle school from 7:30-11:30 daily. I am at the elementary from 11:45-3:45 daily. Students who are enrolled in band will have group band at their respective building during the school day.
I also teach sixth grade music appreciation at the middle school.
Both math and reading skills are used when learning to play an instrument. Math involves learning to count and play rhythms. Reading involves learning to read the notes and rhythms along with written history lessons in their lesson book. The fifth and sixth grade students use the Traditions of Excellence Book by Bruce Pearson.
