Grade 5

Adding and Subtracting Fractions

Apply understanding of equivalent fractions

In fourth grade, students add and subtract fractions with like denominators and become comfortable creating equivalent fractions. Fifth graders combine these two skills to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators by finding equivalent fractions.

5.NF.A.1 Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators.

Multiplying and Dividing Fractions

Multiplying a fraction by a fraction with an area model

Fifth graders extend their understanding of multiplying fractions by using rectangles with fractional side lengths.

5.NF.B.4B Find the area of a rectangle with fractional side lengths by tiling it with unit squares of the appropriate unit fraction side lengths, and show that the area is the same as would be found by multiplying the side lengths. Multiply fractional side lengths to find areas of rectangles, and represent fraction products as rectangular areas.

Fraction as division

Fractions are often thought of as the sum of their unit fractions.

Your Task:

Use Number Line to visualize 3/4 as division. Write a story or problem to go along with thinking about fractions in this way.

5.NF.B.3 Interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator (a/b = a Ă· b).
