EXPLORE

Let's explore using the language of measure!

Choose from the games and videos below

Length/Size

When we talk about length or height with children at the early stage in their learning we sometimes refer to this as the size of something and we use words such as bigger, smaller, taller, shorter when comparing objects.

Here are some activities to help you to explore Length/Height/Size with your child...

Try this online game; Let's Compare

This game focuses on the comparative language of biggest, smallest, shortest, longest, tallest.

Listen to a story

Listen to the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and compare very big, middle sized and teeny weeny objects at the bear's house.

Weight

Help your child to learn about weight by comparing the weight of 2 objects and working out which one is heavier, which one is lighter or if they are the same.

Try this; using 2 objects, ask your child to hold one object in each hand.

  • Which one is heavier?

  • Which one is lighter?

  • Do they feel the same?

  • Perhaps they feel like the heavier object is pulling their hand down more than the lighter object, just like would happen on a balance scale.

Now try this online game; Happy Camel

In this game you can help the camel to find his toys by weighing his food on the balance scales.

If you would like some practice at weighing objects on balance scales go to Create and you will find an activity all about making and using balance scales.

Volume

Help your child to learn about the concept of volume by giving them lots of opportunities to use and understand the meaning of the words full and empty. For example, this could be when playing with water or sand or simply when emptying their toybox or filling it back up again.

Watch the short video to see how Larry the parrot explores full and empty at the playground.

Area

Play this challenging online game to learn about the concept of area. Here you can find the area of shapes using squares as the (non standard) units of measure. It will also help your child to practice their counting skills!
