Makaton helps to encourage language development in very young children and babies
It reduces frustration in children and young people who do not yet have speech as a means of expressing themselves; communicating their wants and needs (e.g. food, drink, hot, cold)
It can help children to make sense of the world around them, especially when talking about abstract places or concepts which are not in front of them (e.g. school, home, fire, rabbit, man)
It supports relationships between children who do confidently communicate using spoken language and those who don't or who find spoken communication challenging
