Elective Selection takes place in spring!
Below you will find information on the courses that are offered, a brief description of each course, and steps on selecting electives for the next school year. We focus on electives because every student is placed in their appropriate Math, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies class as well as a semester of PE. If you have any questions about your student's placement, please reach out to their School Counselor.
FAQ:
Q: Does my student HAVE to take PE?
A: Yes! PE is a state requirement for grades K-8. If your student needs a waiver for medical or religious reasons, please reach out to your counselor. Students going into 7th and 8th grade can opt to take Summer PE prior to the school year. The cost is $100 and students must pass the course in order to replace in-person PE. For more information, please go here: CKSD Summer Academy . The last day to register is typically the last week of May.
Q: My 7th/8th grader wants to take two yearlong classes? (ex: Spanish 1 & Music; Band & Orchestra; Choir & Band)
A: 7th and 8th graders that want to take TWO yearlong courses need to complete Summer PE beforhand. Students were made aware of this in March when counselors signed students up for classes, and parents were emailed similar information at the same time. If a student does not complete, and pass, Summer PE, they will not be able to take two yearlong courses.
Q: My students wants to change their electives, how do they do that?
A: During Falcon Fever students will have the change to request changes. They also have the 1st 5 days of school to get pink sheets (from the office) completed for elective class change requests! We try to accommodate all requests, but due to class size and scheduling constraints can't guarantee changes. Students are able to make elective changes only, changing core classes is not possible unless it is incorrect. Example: Need to be in Geometry instead of Math 3.
Q: I'm new to the district and my student was in the Gifted/Magnet/Venture/Highly Capable Program. Can they still be in it at Fairview?
A: Please contact your school counselor ASAP with the eligibility from your previous district. This can look like, CogAT/SBA/iReady/STAR/MAP/Naglieri testing, or acceptance letter from previous district. If you're a military connected student, we participate in the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children. Please contact Erin Johnson at ErinJ@ckschools.org or 360-662-1700 ext. 1735. For more information, please see: CKSD Highly Capable.
