lANGUAGE ARTS
The first grade language arts curriculum covers several topics, all with the shared goal of building and improving communication skills. This is accomplished by teaching topics such as phonics, reading, reading comprehension, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and spelling.
Students in second grade language arts will gain more skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. They will continue to build an understanding of the connection between sounds, letters, and words. They will gain skills in using word roots to help them figure out the meaning of new words.
The language arts curriculum for third grade will teach students how to: Use proper punctuation, capitalization, and noun and verb forms (singular/plural) Understand parts of speech, prefixes, suffixes, homophones, etc. Know the different sentence types.
The fourth grade Language Arts curriculum integrates reading, writing, speaking, listening, and the study of vocabulary and grammar in a way that engages today's learners and supports them in building a broad and diverse set of literacy skills.
MATHeMATICS
Place value: understanding the value of each digit in a number and how to write numbers in different forms, such as expanded, written, or standard form.
Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division: learning and practicing the basic operations of arithmetic with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Solving word problems that involve these operations and applying different strategies, such as regrouping, partial products, or area models.
Fractions and decimals: learning how to represent parts of a whole using fractions and decimals. Comparing, ordering, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions and decimals. Converting between fractions and decimals and finding equivalent fractions.
Geometry: identifying and classifying different types of plane figures, such as angles, parallel and perpendicular lines, polygons, circles, etc. Measuring angles using a protractor and finding the area and perimeter of plane figures. Exploring the properties of symmetry, congruence, and transformations.
Measurement: learning how to measure length, weight, capacity, time, and temperature using appropriate units and tools. Converting between different units of measurement and using them to solve problems. Reading and interpreting data from tables, graphs, charts, and line plots.
science
Students usually begin studying science in lower elementary school in an observational way. Science in elementary school covers basic concepts of life sciences, physical sciences, and Earth and space sciences that develop across the grades. Students in grades 1-4 usually learn about the following topics:
Life Science: Students learn about living things such as plants and animals and their characteristics.
Earth Science: Students learn about the Earth’s natural resources, weather patterns, and natural disasters.
Physical Science: Students learn about matter, energy, and forces.

Students in grades 1-4 usually learn about the following topics:
Geography: Students learn about maps, globes, and basic geography concepts such as location and direction.
History: Students learn about important historical events and figures.
Civics: Students learn about citizenship and government.
Economics: Students learn about basic economic concepts such as supply and demand.

"Specials" are weekly classes meant to expand a child's knowledge beyond the basics.
