We try to build activities that engage students to Analyze, Communicate and Collaborate, and use Technology. Here is an example of our Honors Algebra 2 kids engaging in these activities through developing their own scenario of a Ferris Wheel and mapping the heights of the Gondola as it travels the wheel. This is an exploration for students to discover how trigonometry models situations in the real world.
We are encouraging our students to have a growth mindset. Research by Moser et al. 2011 shows that synapses can be developed at any age when mistakes are made and someone has a growth mindset. Read more on the study here:
Now that summer is here, we encourage students to continue growing their minds over the summer. Find "how to" videos on youtube, read a book, and spend a few minutes a day practicing simple math skills. If you are in honors next year please take time to do your summer assignment throughout the summer and not in a single sitting. It will keep your mind fresh if you work on it every couple of days. -Mrs. Bathgate
The end of the year is coming and the number one question teachers are being asked is how can students improve their grades.
In math classes the district approved course description requires the final to be worth 20% of a student's grade. This means that an A on the final is the best thing your student can do at this point to improve their grade. If they don't study, a low score on the final can also easily drop your student 1-2 letter grades.

A question we regularly get from parents is how they can help their students at home even if they don't know the math. One of the most helpful things parents can do to support learning is to ask their student questions about what they learned and have them reflect on the learning. If you ask your student to tell you what they learned and then based on that ask them to explain things you do not understand about it, it can actually increase their level of understanding and retention. When they can't explain, then that's the part of the lesson you can encourage them to talk to their teacher about. Having students show notes and worksheets can be a good starting point for these conversations. -Mrs. Bathgate
