If students have the requisite word recognition and language comprehension skills but still suffer from a lack of fluency, here are some strategies you can try.
Speed Drills at the sub-word, word, phrase, and sentence level can be helpful in increasing automatic recognition and fluency.
Phrase-Cued Oral Reading involves taking a short passage, dividing it into phrases, and then practicing reading the phrases before reading the passage as a whole.
Simultaneous Oral Reading takes place when a teacher reads aloud with a student, either with or slightly ahead of the student's reading pace to provide a model for the student to follow.
Partner Reading has students paired into reading partners, with one acting as the reader and the other as a coach. Students are taught how to offer word-level reading assistance when their partner needs help with a word. Partners take turns at each role and summarize what they read on each page.
Repeated Reading in this strategy, students read from the same passage repeatedly for a set amount of time to determine a baseline WCPM (words correct per minute) score, practices reading the passage aloud independently 3-4 times over a period of two days, then reads the passage for time again to determine if the WCPM has improved.
