Primary Sources

When planning for Social Studies instruction, teachers should consider a variety of historical evidence, including primary source documents, photographs, and audio or video recordings. This page offers websites where teachers may retrieve these primary source resources.

Library of Congress

Search the Library of Congress for Teachers to find primary and secondary sources as well as ideas for using primary sources in your classroom. Also, check out their Themed Resources page for resources grouped by theme.

Calisphere

Calisphere is the University of California's online photography and art exhibit. Check it out for primary source photographs, paintings, and drawings.

California State Library

Use the California History page at the California State Library to find images and documents for use in California History lessons.

In addition to the above websites, check out the California Department of Education's external resources list as well as this PADLET with sample lessons and resources.
