Hello, Room 122 Parents,

Wow! June!?? How did that happen? I find it hard to believe but it is here. This week will be our last full week of first grade!

Here are our curriculum highlights for the week, as well as any announcements that are related to first graders.

This week in:

Religion

We will finish Lesson 8/"Jesus Sends the Holy Spirit". We will combine lesson pages so that we can cover Lesson 9/"The Holy Spirit Helps the Church to Grow". We will also discuss The Church Year and Ordinary Time in the Church.

We will continue to discuss the virtue of accountability. We will learn what accountability means and how we can be accountable for our work and our actions throughout the school day.

We will finish our review for our end of the year exam this Tuesday.

Religion books will be sent home by the end of this week. We have finished all of the lessons and pages unless your child was absent. You may want to keep the book or keep parts of it. There are prayers, How to Say the Rosary, The List of Sacraments, etc in the back of the book... that you may want to save for your child.

Math

This week,we will return to Chapters 13 and 14, Geometry and Fractions. These are quick lessons that we can combine.

We will continue to review math concepts that we learned throughout the year to prepare for our end of the year exam this Wednesday.

Reading/Spelling

This week we will continue Module 8/"Tell Me a Story". In this module, children will enjoy classic tales and contemporary stories as they get to know storytellers from long ago and from the present.

Children will deepen their understanding of the lessons stories can teach, such as the importance of resilience in the face of challenges.

Children will discover that characters in stories rarely get things right the first time they try something new. Like real people, characters often overcome challenges by refusing to give up and trying again. We will continue in ELA till the end of the school year.

The ELA exam will be on Thursday. It consists mostly of grammar concepts taught throughout the year. The children will not be tested on the comprehension skills we learned: for example, Central Idea, Theme, Author's Purpose.

We will also continue in Fundations until the end of the year. Fundations is a part of the second grade curriculum and will review and then pick up from where first grade ended.

If you have any questions about the curriculum, please reach out to me.

Have a great week,

Lisa McVeigh
