Frequently Asked Questions:
My child's grades are really high, why isn't my child included in the gifted and talented pull out program?
Your child's grades are only one measure used to determine their academic needs. We use multiple measures to determine which students are included in the pull out program, including but not limited to: CogAT, benchmark scores, NJSLA results, running records, teacher and family feedback.
Can my child study or prepare for the CogAT?
These universal screeners measure giftedness and are not something that your child can practice for or prepare for. You can help them to perform at their best every day by ensuring they come to school ready to learn.
Does the CogAT impact my child's grades or anything other than the gifted services?
No, these screeners will not impact your child's grade and are only used to help us create academic opportunities that will best support your child. Teacher's can use these results to help them better create lessons that align with your child's strengths!
Can my child retake the screener if they didn't do well?
Students cannot retake a screener because it will compromise the validity of the screener tool. Students have many opportunities to show their talents in many ways throughout the school year and no one assessment will determine their participation in any programs. Using multiple measures allows us to identify all of your child's strengths as we design an academic program that is appropriate for them.
Based on the data, my child is eligible for gifted and talented pull out services, what's next?
Your child will be assigned to the Gifted and Talented class and will begin going to that class during the school day. Your child will participate in different learning opportunities that will support them to achieve their academic potential in and out of the classroom. They will be encouraged to develop a STEM mindset that includes communication, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking.
