One voice may not be loud enough. Amplifying voices through interest groups is one of the ways to be heard in a representative democracy. Session 2
We all have a role in creating and maintaining a civil society. Oregon's Constitution says, "No law shall be passed restraining the free expression of opinion, or restricting the right to speak, write, or print freely on any subject whatever; but every person shall be responsible for the abuse of this right." Where does individual responsibility begin and end when it comes to hate speech? Is hate speech compatible with democracy? What language is helpful and what is harmful when responding to a disclosure of hateful targeting? Join this session to explore these challenging questions and more and learn how Oregon laws have been updated to respond to increases of hate and bias across the state.

Session 3
It’s often said that the US Constitution created the world’s greatest “democracy.” But did it really? We will talk about various “undemocratic” features of the original Constitution – for example, no direct election of Senators; no direct election of the President; no election of federal judges; the exclusion of women, the poor, and people of color from the franchise. We will discuss how the Constitution has been amended over the course of the last two centuries in an attempt to make America more democratic, as well as how and why there continue to be significant undemocratic features of our system of government.
Session 3 and 4
We will explore the history of voting in our country, address the issue of voter fraud (does it exist?!), and discuss how making voting a habit, like brushing your teeth or washing your face, can lead to a healthier society and, ultimately, a better world.
