LAWANG SEWU

This historical building is now owned by PT Kereta Api Indonesia, which was originally the head office of the private railway Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (NISM). Spanning 18,232 meter square, the Lawang Sewu tower was built in phases. Construction started on February 27, 1904, and finishing in July 1907, was the main building. Meanwhile, an additional building was constructed around 1916 and completed in 1918.

The Lawang Sewu building is currently a museum displaying variety of items related to Indonesia's railway history. The Alkmaar collection, Edmonson machines, calculating machines, typewriters, steam train replicas, securities, and other collections include on showcase. By the help of images, films, and restoration materials, Lawang Sewu describes the renovation process of the building. There's a train-related library as you approach closer to the exit.

Along with being a historically significant tourist destination, the Lawang Sewu Building is available for hire for a wide range of events, such as weddings, festivals, fairs, art exhibitions, workshops, even photo shoots. Until now Lawang Sewu is still a famous tourists attraction in the city of Semarang and is never empty of visitors. Lawang Sewu becomes a well-known icon in the city of Semarang.
