Originally trained as architect/urban planner, I have worked on conservation of cultural heritage site for about 20 years in Asia, mainly in China, also a little in the US and Europe. My experience ranges from design, engineering, scientific conservation, to economic, historic/anthropologic research, new media etc. I am now founding partner of a few consultancies focusing on different aspect in heritage conservation, scientific committee member of ICOMOS (International Council on monument and Site), council member of China Association for Conservation Technology of Cultural Heritage.
To me, heritage conservation is a small but vital field. It is not just about history, keeping tradition and protecting the physical fabric of old buildings/cities, it is rather transformative, incorporates humanity, science, art, sustainability and much more. It helps us and our future generation to better understand the communities and cultures throughout different time and space, reflecting on our diverse nature and mutual goals, thus make informed decisions and take individual and collective action to improve our world.
