So What is a Teal Organisation?
A Teal organisation is characterised by a modern, organic, and highly agile culture. Featured in Frederic Laloux’s groundbreaking book Reinventing Organizations, it represents the latest stage in human collaboration.
Laloux outlines 5 major organisational evolutionary models throughout history:
🔴 Red: Crude, impulsive, and based on constant power (e.g., wolf packs/mafia).
🟡 Amber: Highly structured, stable, and process-driven (e.g., traditional military/bureaucracy).
🟠 Orange: Goal-oriented, meritocratic, and run like a machine (the modern corporate world).
🟢 Green: Participatory, family-oriented, and value-driven (focusing on empowerment and culture).
🔵 Teal: Self-managing, evolutionary, and run like a living organism.
Teal organisations are defined by three core breakthroughs: Self-management (no traditional bosses), Wholeness (bringing your authentic self to work), and an Evolutionary Purpose (adapting organically to the environment).
