There is a path, still used today that the old fishermen of Bognor would use regularly to visit the church at Bersted every Sunday and an other special occasions.
It runs from Waterloo Square, along the back of the crazy golf course, across to the High Street and past Hotham Park to South Bersted.
It is quite possible that this was used by the fishermen dating back to Saxon times, from the original fishing settlement, which would have been situated somewhere close to the Bognor Rocks, to take their daily catch up the river to the larger hamlet of Berhæstede to trade for grain and fabrics (which were known to have been woven there in "grubenhausen", or sunken craftshops).
The Felppham Rife would have been a much larger inlet then, allowing ships to sail right up to the weaving houses of old Berhæstede.
