The Philosophy of Computing Research Group is a pluralistic space devoted to investigating fundamental and philosophical questions about computation and its various consequences, both within and beyond academia.
Our group is hosted by the Facultad de Ciencias (School of Sciences) and the Pabellón Nacional de la Biodiversidad (National Biodiversity Pavilion) of the Instituto de Biología (Institute of Biology) of the National Autonomous University of mexico (UNAM).

Philosophy of Computer Science
Epistemological, ontological, and methodological problems of computer science and of its objects of study: the computing machine and computation qua phenomenon.

Theory, Logic, and Mathematics of Computation
Axiomatic or categorical formulations of the notion of effective procedure or effective calculability. Research in automated reasoning and proof theory.

Sociopolitical and Aesthetic Problems of Computing
Study of the political, social, cultural, and aesthetic dimensions of computing in the world, with a strong historical focus.

Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence and Its Derivatives
Critique and theorization of artificial intelligence systems, both as technical objects and as sociotechnical systems.

Philosophy of Technology
Philosophical, post-structuralist studies on the use of the machine metaphor in discourse in the age of accelerationism and techno-feudalism.

Unconventional computing
Frontier theoretical research in super-Turing and biological computing.

Computation and explanation
Critical studies on the use of the computing-machine metaphor as explanation or justification in the sciences.

General Systems Theory
Research in the tradition of second-order cybernetics, enactive cognitive science, and non-mechanistic biologies that reject the computing machine as explanation.
Our academic offering:
International Conference
The International Conference on Philosophy of Computing is a biennial event that brings together experts working at the frontier of the areas of interest to this group, and constitutes one of the most diverse and wide-ranging academic gatherings in the discipline.
The most recent edition was held in 2025. The programme, including abstracts, can be consulted here. More information will follow shortly regarding a special issue to be edited with the most significant contributions from the 2025 conference.
Annual colloquium
Each year, towards december, the Research Group holds a colloquium at the Facultad de Ciencias (UNAM), where its members and specially invited guests present new research findings and insights, fostering engagement with student communities interested in these topics.
Internal seminar
The group holds a fortnightly internal seminar in which discussions are developed around the research of its members. It is hosted by the Pabellón Nacional de la Biodiversidad (IB-UNAM) and is not open to the public.
Undergraduate courses
The group includes professors who teach the Philosophy of Computing course at the Facultad de Ciencias (UNAM) once or twice a year. The course is open to auditors from any background, but is primarily intended for student communities at the Facultad de Ciencias and other university departments.

Throughout the year, the group issues various calls for people to join, whether as a researcher, as a student (thesis candidate), or as a servicio social participant.
