This course offers a survey of the history of the Western Hemisphere, with a special emphasis on the United States and Latin America. A variety of themes are covered including political science, economics, sociology, culture, and technological innovation. We begin with a survey of the early indigenous civilizations and end with an analysis of current political and economic trends. Students are given a solid foundation in the historical development of the region.
Of equal importance is the objective of developing skills of critical analysis. Students are assessed on their ability to understand relevant facts in context and analyze historical controversies and how these inform the modern world. Types of assessment will include evaluation of classwork and homework, quizzes, tests, presentations, projects, and at least one formal writing assignment per quarter.
