Becoming confident and independent readers of all content areas is the outcome of grade 1 students who are knowledgeable in concepts of print, letter recognition, decoding, reading strategies, and comprehension. This is accomplished through guided, shared, read aloud, and independent reading experiences coupled with explicit instruction. 

Through Word Study, our students learn word families and their patterns, sight words, content area vocabulary, and spelling. As writers, the children will progress from the challenge of encoding words towards grammatically sound advanced sentence compositions and process writing.
